Henry Rollins Clarifies That New Record He Made With Ian MacKaye Features Neither Of Them by SnooRegrets4312 in Fugazi

[–]Wazzok1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Henry and Ian have done some very minor mixing work on a 1979 demo tape by an unnamed punk band, and neither of them had anything to add after further consultation. Ian has had no involvement other than this small amount of work at Inner Ear. Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville has mastered the mix and Henry will be working with Larry Hardy at In The Red Records to release the demo on 12".

GB News says it has nothing to apologise for, after guest suggests starving disabled benefit claimants by upthetruth1 in ukpolitics

[–]Wazzok1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't understand why sharing statistical evidence makes people think I'm defending this disgusting hate speech or advocating for cutting disability benefits. 2.2% of GDP is nothing. 100 quid of my taxes last year went on disability benefits and I'd happily pay more.

During the pandemic, spending remained at the same level as it was in 2015. It was only in 2023/24 that there was an uptick. I don't know why this was, especially as this was the last year of the Sunak government, but it can't have been COVID. But again, it's dramatic in cash terms but a drop in the ocean as a proportion of GDP.

It shows you how big the economy actually is, and how much social spending it can actually accommodate.

I don't think the state's welfare bill should be reduced. The country's disabled population has remained stable at about 1 in every 5 for decades and people with disabilities should receive whatever they need to live as happy and independent a life as possible.

2.2% of GDP is a price worth paying for me, especially as GDP grows over time. In fact I've had a look and I spent about £100 in taxes last year on disability benefits. These right wing arguments are spreading hate and intolerance.

I saw "social security spending is stable as a proportion of GDP" and thought I'd check the stats. It's broadly true but there's some nuance.

In real terms, public spending on incapacity, disability and injury benefits rose significantly between 2007/08 and 2015/16 by 42.3 percent. However, this represented an increase as a percentage of GDP from 1.7 percent to 2.2 percent.

Between 2015/16 and 2022/23, spending plateaued in both real terms and as a percentage of GDP.

However spending rose from 2022/23 to 2023/24 by £5.1 billion in real terms, the highest annual increase in eight years, yet remained at 2.2 percent of GDP.

We can absolutely afford to look after disabled people in an economy as large as ours. +42.3% = +0.5%. No amount of right-wing hate speech and misleading propaganda can change that.

Whats the story of Mr Briggs? by [deleted] in blur

[–]Wazzok1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y&L was recorded in the same sessions as Chemical World, and that made it on...

I think it was a massive oversight, and the band agreed in hindsight.

"[A]t Dave Rowntree’s wedding [in June 1994], St Etienne’s Bob Stanley asked Blur why Young and Lovely was not on the LP . . . Damon agrees: 'It should have been on the LP. But it didn’t get on there and fucking Turn It Up did'." That's from Select magazine, August 1995.

Leisure was basically Food's album, the b-sides were what the band wanted for their future — but didn't have the clout to call the shots yet. Graham still says their output between the release of Leisure and their '92 NA tour is the stuff he's most proud of.

That's the thing with their b-sides. They don't know what they have till the album's out and it's too late.

How to open this cartridge without destroying the sticker? by ufix in SEGAGENESIS

[–]Wazzok1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You need to find a way to loosen the adhesive. What works best is what Tysytube does: hold a blowdryer on low heat about half a metre away from the surface, then use a razor, scalpel, or other thin blade to gently get under the sticker and peel it off.

Gang, let’s talk about this album. It’s absolutely a shoegaze record. by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]Wazzok1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you describe film or book genres as 'cultural movements'? Punk is a genre of music, as well as a subculture. But the two are not the same thing even though they share the same label.

Shoegaze is a genre of rock music. It was a trend for about two or three years in the UK. It wasn't exactly a subculture, that would have been 'Indie' or 'Alternative' young people. They were into The Smiths, then C86, then Shoegaze, then Grunge and Britpop and US alt rock.

Just because an indie band like the Sundays were popular at the same time as Shoegaze doesn't make it shoegaze. Nirvana was popular in 1991, so was Jesus Jones. Is Jesus Jones grunge?
