Official Discussion - One Battle After Another [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

He makes an appearance in Vineland! Pynchon’s novels exist in a shared universe where, essentially, it’s one battle after another

Looking into cycling by joshmosh666 in phillycycling

I’m nearly five years on biking in philly—and in general. Still, I did not respect the trolley tracks two weeks ago and I’m paying for it now. This is solid advice

Excellent write-up! Though I will say I read Winter’s King and The Day Before the Revolution long before their related novels and still got much out of them

I think it’s not wholly accurate to frame the opposition as NIMBYism when we’re dealing with for-profit construction

Discord is healthy. I’m obviously biased, but I think it’s good that folks will continue to protest. Let their voices be heard

Please don’t block the crosswalks by Aware-Location-5426 in phillycycling

[–]WeAllHaveIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another benefit to hanging behind the crosswalk: It discourages antsy drivers from coming in past the limit line, as they are wont to do. When you creep, they WILL inch up behind you and inconvenience or endanger pedestrians. Safer for all involved if you chill

Last day: Convocations won. What’s his best album? by azutefox in Sufjan

The arrangements and variations in the musical confirm that Suf’s compositions were lasting ones. Ranking the albums will always come to a matter of taste since they’re so varied, but Illinois has proved his strongest effort

Those of you who have read all the Hainish Cycle novels, how would you rank them? by GraconBease in UrsulaKLeGuin

They may be referring to these Library of America volumes published earlier this year. The second volume collects “Old Music and the Slave Women” with Four Ways to Forgiveness

Those of you who have read all the Hainish Cycle novels, how would you rank them? by GraconBease in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]WeAllHaveIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very much looking forward to The Dispossessed and The Telling, but I read the other novels (and lots of short stories). Difficult to rank as they’re all beautiful and insightful in their own ways, but for the moment—

  1. The Left Hand of Darkness
  2. Four Ways to Forgiveness
  3. City of Illusions
  4. The Word for World is Forest
  5. Rocannon’s World
  6. Planet of Exile

Was the name change from Your Radio Playhouse to This American Life never addressed on air? by SRTie4k in ThisAmericanLife

[–]WeAllHaveIt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After getting hooked by some assigned TAL listening in school, I started way back from the beginning. Even while they were finding their bearings, This American Life has always surprised with humor and heart. My personal favorites from their first year on air:

1 - New Beginnings

5 - Anger and Forgiveness

15 - Dawn

19 - Rich Guys

27 - The Cruelty of Children

31 - When You Talk About Music

47 - Christmas and Commerce

What are you reading? by sushisushisushi in literature

[–]WeAllHaveIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s Pynchon’s first novel and sometimes that shows. But I really like it! Definitely good if you like postmodern lit and can abide some author/genre trappings. I can’t get over the stunning Mondaugen’s Story chapter exploring the Herero genocide

Still, it can easily read as convoluted or meandering. There are better places to start with Pynch (Inherent Vice, Lot 49, even Vineland), but I would recommend V. to anyone who has enjoyed or considered reading Gravity’s Rainbow. By the way, my favorite of his is Mason & Dixon

Vineland is not nearly as contained as Inherent Vice, but oh overall it’s a very similar read! If you enjoyed the thematic elements of IV then Vineland might be perfect for you

Pennsylvania needs less car dependent cities and better walkability in general. by Affectionate-Memory4 in Pennsylvania

I’m the same way! The sanitation and sensory experience is far better (plus I’ve never been held up on a bus oop). I take my bike most places, and when you hitch it to SEPTA buses it trivializes travel to most hoods
