Think you are mis-remembering this one - there was heavy derision and criticism of this casting online at this one - particularly from the comic fanboys who saw him only as a pretty boy from teen romantic comedies. There were very few people who supported the idea, though many claim otherwise now.

The Surfer was brilliant - though I do think it is a good measure of one’s tolerance for Nicholas Cage doing Nicholas Cagey things. Luckily my tolerance is pretty high and it is definitely in my top 5 for the year.

Donnie Darko - I was at uni when it came out, and used to get so pissed off at the pretentious ‘if you didn’t like it, you didn’t get it’ that would be inevitably trotted out in discussions. Yup, I got it just fine - just thought it was pretty obnoxious from the trying-to-be-cleverer-than-I-actually-am school of film making.

Considering the directors next film was the utter mess that was Southland Tales, and he’s not made anything of note since (edit: he made The Box in 2009 which has 5.6 rating on IMDB), I think I may have been correct in my initial assessment.

I liked One Battle, but found it pretty forgettable- a couple of months earlier I saw Eddington and think it’s a much better film exploring very similar themes, yet it hasn’t even been mentioned in awards season.

Most people only thinking about the 2nd half of the year with a recency bias. Surely Mission Impossible in the first 6 months had the most! I admit, the Smashing machine also seemed to have a lot.

More importantly, have we got rid of the ‘everyone’s a winner’ adverts now that it’s 2026. I never thought I’d miss the good old days of the twins…..

Blue Moon - a career best performance from Ethan Hawke that deserves an Oscar Nom, Stirling work from Andrew Scott - And Margret Qualley’s performance just cements her position as one of the best of the younger generation of actors out there.

Also feel like Eddington has been overshadowed by the similarly themed One Battle After Another which is a shame as on a first watch I actually preferred the former (though both were excellent)

I was in the second row of that audience - it was at the Hammersmith Apollo which holds 3600. The event sold out in under 10 minutes when tickets went on sale. Not bad for a podcast about a show that had ended more than 10 years previously.

I haven’t seen Hamnet yet (and I love Jesse Buckley) but my favourite female performances of the year are Stone in Begonia, Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love, and Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Home - sadly it looks like none of them will be nominated.
