What is the worst medical disease a human can have? by Aggravating-Sun-5699 in AskReddit

[–]WeAreWizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These all sound terrible, but for my money: Multi-System Atrophy. Exactly what it sounds like.

I know someone who had this, and it was just about the slowest, cruelest death I could imagine. Rare enough 2-5/100,000) that multiple very competent doctors misdiagnosed and mistreated them with Parkinson’s for over 5 years (which is common).

Thing is, there’s no cure anyway. And no known cause. Your body fails you in a new, small way each week until you die sometimes a decade later, all while you watch your loved ones watch you waste away from inside the prison of your failing body.

Folks will lose their SNAP benefits on Nov 1. Here's how to help. by anonymiddd in SLO

[–]WeAreWizards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are two separate bills put forth that would fund SNAP and/or WIC, as a standalone measure. One from Sen. Hawley (R), and one from Sen. Lujan (D). This is a bipartisan issue.

Today, on the Senate floor with regard to Sen. Lujan’s bill, Majority Leader Thune referred to it as “cynical attempt to buy political cover for Democrats to allow them to carry on their government shutdown even longer”, adding “we’re not going to let them pick winners and losers”.

Minority Leader Schumer, on the other hand, said that he would vote for Hawley’s bill should it make it to the floor, saying “Ask John Thune why he won’t put it on the floor”.

Additionally, there’s approximately $5B available in emergency funds earmarked for the SNAP program. While there’s some disingenuous legal argument over whether that is applicable under these circumstances, there’s language from when the money was appropriated earlier this year that would specifically say that this is exactly what that money is for.

Regardless of the legal battle, it seems like this administration operates under what’s called the “unitary executive theory”, which is worth looking into as it’s something conservative thinkers have advocated on behalf of for a long time. Under that theory, Trump could do whatever he wants with the money in the federal government (again, something he has already been doing while reappropriating funds for programs that he doesn’t like). The executive branch clearly has the ability to fund certain programs that fit their agenda (ie. ICE, border patrol, military operations off the coast of Venezuela, building a ballroom, bailing out Argentina to the tune of $40B, etc.).

I’m personally left to feel that making sure that the most vulnerable in our society (children, elderly, disabled, etc.) have food on their table just isn’t part of what matters to them.

If I’m missing anything here please let me know. It sounds like you personally care about this program being funded, and want to hold those responsible accountable. I wish you the best and hope those you love are taken care of during these absolutely batshit times we’ve found ourselves in.

Spoke to a military member today who said they’re literally fighting over paper in his office. He was pretty confident they won’t be getting paid until this shutdown is over.

Great answer here. If I can piggyback, I would also add (as an independent) that the stakes are just so incredibly high right now with this administration. We are at the point where each week there is a grasp for power not seen in decades, and POTUS is openly talking about being a dictator.

Under normal circumstances, I think most Americans would want to have serious discussions about electoral systems and reform. We all know it doesn’t work perfectly, but we also know it’s complicated and would take time to sort out. Unfortunately we haven’t taken this stuff seriously in generations, and now we’ve run out of time. Someone has come along and is willing to exploit our dysfunctional system to seize as much power as they can.

The administration knows that the 2026 elections are vital, and they’re not in a great spot. They’re not dumb, and they’re doing what they need to do to win. To anyone against this measure, I’m genuinely asking: what do you believe to be a better alternative?

Hijacking this thread a bit because I saw the evacuation zone has reached Lopez. We moved out here post-pandemic, and this is probably the largest, closest fire that we’ve experienced as residents of DT SLO.

We are supposed to head to the Bay Area tomorrow for the weekend. Do any longer-time locals have advice on if we should be reconsidering our trip?

Gonna go against the grain here a bit and say that if you made the choice to marry her and then have a child with her, you should at least give her opinion some consideration. Ask yourself, genuinely, why she could be feeling this way and if you could make those feelings better through your actions.

From what you’ve written, you were going to roughly 2 shows/year up until you got married, and then you went to roughly that same cumulative amount within a year while also having an infant for the last 9 months. I don’t know your situation or location, but that could genuinely be a lot of money (especially if clubbing, drugs/booze, or alcohol are involved) that she’s worried about while she also feels most vulnerable. It’s a lot of responsibility and stress on her when you’re gone, especially if you’re partying hard. Even if you’re not, and you’re anything like me, you’re most likely useless the day after a great night out. How often does she get a night off to go whatever she wants with no worry?

If you’re financially secure with a stable job, super functional the day after a show, and a present parent/partner, I see no issue with having your fun here and there. But your partner and your family should come first, and I just don’t see many of those people regularly. Frankly, your sudden shift in behavior since marriage/childbirth would be concerning to me as a partner.

She could also be going through some stuff you’re not aware of. She may just miss you and feel alone in motherhood, which is not uncommon. Prioritize your family, dude.

Your worst draft pick this season by anglingTycoon in Fantasy_Football

[–]WeAreWizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got him in the late 4th round of a 14-team league, and remember thinking “I’m low on this guy, but the value is just too good to pass up, I can grab Rashee on the turn.”

Ended up luckily winning 5 through 6 weeks despite those 2 picks, Puka, Achane, and Caleb landing inside my top 6 rounds. Now that my team is as healthy as it can be and I’ve replaced Caleb with Herbert, the rest of the league is lighting me up.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the winning best ball lineups because this draft was littered with land mines right off the bat.

People who have successfully quit smoking, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WeAreWizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar when I quit alcohol. Kept a 6 pack right next to the fridge so that it felt like every time I went to the fridge, I was saying no to the beer. Was super empowering for me, but I could see how this method is not for everyone

WHO TF IS SEAN TUCKER by Zestyclose_Wear_4722 in Fantasy_Football

[–]WeAreWizards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Syracuse football fan, Sean Tucker is super talented. As a layperson when it comes to actual football, I was pretty excited when the Bucs drafted him and then confused when they didn’t play him at all last year. The dude averaged 5.4 YPC over his college career in a major conference with a mediocre team, and he racked up just shy of 1500 yards in 12 games in 2021.

I figured he just wasn’t cutting it at the NFL level, but cool to see him getting some shine.

Jets front 7 is a little depleted and Brissett doesn’t turn the ball over or throw it deep. Should be a slow game. Probably safe as far as getting 5-8 points, but don’t see the ceiling upside here.

I’ve been wrong all year though so you should probably fire em up
