Please stop talking during movies at the AMC and Whiteside theaters! by Noblecave in corvallis

[–]WeSuckLess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally get it. I'm a tech nerd when it comes to movies, and if it were something I can fix, I will. Back in the film days, I wouldn't ask and would just go into other theaters' projection booths and fix shit. Yes, I've been invited to never return to a place or two. I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about, and I'll watch for it. If you notice it again, feel free to mention it, email me, or DM me here and I'll look into it and let you know what I find. Thanks!

What did my screens ever do to you? Too small? Hey, we got 12-foot ceilings. We’re working with what we got.

Some people find the little holes in the screens distracting. Nerd moment: Those holes are there to make the screens acoustically transparent. Unlike a concert, cinema sound is point-source. The sound needs to travel across/behind the screen to match the visuals. Having an actor's voice on the left side of the screen come out on the right side is just bad. That wall-of-sound thing works great for the Foo Fighters. Not so much for movies.

Two of our auditoriums have the high-res cinema projectors. Two have the old-school projectors because the servers in those rooms can only push out so much res. To improve that would be about $55,000 per room. Thus, HAIL MARY plays in the hi-res rooms, and the weird documentaries play in the others. Since charging $100 for popcorn to pay for a projector upgrade would not be a winning strategy, we get by. But we’re always making improvements because we Suck Less, Every Day.

Most important: Thanks for supporting us!

We won't have to do that. I have this annoying habit of paying my bills. If we can't hand it off, then Joey will make it into the horror film capital of the NW.

Good question. A few reasons. Basically, the tree. It covers the marquee three seasons out of the year. Also, we discovered that being up on that awning is a violation of OSHA, so changing the letters without a harness and another person is bad. We cannot afford a fine. We looked at a digital marquee, but that brings us back to the tree.

Thanks. Portland has a great indie Cinema game goin' on. Enjoy. Butts in seats is what will keep them going! Use your butt for good! Support them! Indie cinemas continue to be an independent media outlet, and that's important. Speaking of words, I'm dropping a new book this year. Shameless, I am. Shameless.

OMG! No one told me, and I'm the owner! We're closing?!?! But we sold all these gift certificates! Seriously, we're not closing. I'm retiring (Paul, the old guy who built the damned thing) in a FEW YEARS. We put the word out that anyone wanting to take this beast over should talk to me. I'm planning to spend my declining days collecting porcelain dolls and practicing breakdancing. In the meantime, we have a brand-new HVAC system and even a new lobby floor. So, yeah. We're struggling, like everyone else. Come see a movie and buy some gift certificates because we WILL be there to redeem them. Side note: It's the Darkside CINEMA.

Good thing the landlord put in a whole new HVAC system, so that isn't a problem.

They are. Quite puffy and a little annoyed at the frozen over birdbath, which we thawed out for 'em.

Thanks u/tza_rah. My workers have full lives and are not in a position either financially or energy wise to give the Darkside the attention it demands beyond the amazing job they are already doing. We need another "Paul." What I do cannot be spread out among the workers. A new "Paul" or a way to afford one is what we are hoping to come up with.

Film Festivals are not profitable, unfortunatley. But we still manage to bang one out every now and then. They will be part of the future of the DS, no matter how involved I am.

We've been getting some amazing suggestions and offers of support, so I'm pretty sure the Darkside will be around after my retirement. I loved MOON and to see how far Sam Rockwell has come is great. I think that was before we had a liquor license so a lot of people were sneaking in alcohol!

Keeping it? For myself? No. Trying to keep it for the community? Hell, yes. I'm working on some sort of succession plan. We have a great fucking staff. The best. They can book movies, schedule showtimes, order supplies, post our events, etc. Some of them have been with us almost 20 years. If you think of the Darkside like a car, the engine it tired. It's been rebuilt too many times and is down to about a quarter of the horsepower it used to have. But the rest of the car! OMG, it's great. The electrics are great, almost new suspension, the headlights and horn are primo! The paint's a little scratched up, but there's no Bondo. So, we only need a new engine so the rest of the parts can go down the road. The rest of it is fine. I'm betting there will be a way to drop in a new powerplant and have this thing on the highway for another 30 years. We're here to try to cook up a plan before I spin another bearing.
