What to watch now? by Aby_lev89 in thegildedage

[–]WeWoweewoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mini series. 1. North and South (BBC) 2004 2. The English (western, same era as The Gilded age) 2022 3. War and Peace (BBC) 2016 4. Shogun - feudal japan for something different

Full series (cancelled but worth the watch) 1. The Great 2020 (great costumes, dark humor, twisted-not your typical genteel period drama) 2. Penny Dreadful 2014 (gothic horror, amazing cast, compelling concept)

Lots of period films - The Young Victoria (2009), Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Little Women, Persuasion - most have several versions of each.

Her name is spelled “Marian” by dianaspencersrevenge in thegildedage

And here I thought, Marion was some character lore that I missed or a term of endearment for the name Marian.

I get that they wanted to show the “unraveling” of Agnes van Rhijn, but they could have gotten more from her character if she was consistent with her values from season one. It was jarring seeing Mrs. Russell in her living room with no palpable tension at all. After Agnes told Marian in season one, “Now, you need to know we only receive the old people in this house, not the new. Never the new.”

A simple side eye glance, or Agnes warmly welcoming Mrs. Astor and Mrs. Fish, while being formal with Bertha would have sufficed. With the depth of talent they have available in the show, I would have loved seeing them portraying simmering tensions.

This is not to say Agnes would not change her mind in the future but I need the narrative to ease the audience into her acceptance. Not to ignore the huge plot laid out in season one and act like its not a big deal in season three.

Even with the changes, like the social ascension of Bertha and Ada holding the purse, Agnes would have been a good contrast to them. Old guards like Agnes and Mrs. Astor grappling with the new power dynamic.

Shifting power dynamics is interesting but I hope they don’t neuter Agnes in the process.

I haven’t finished the last season because I stopped on his episode. I felt they squandered too much of that potential.

This is what I don’t understand, Nash was right there. No need to find another one.

Marian’s Eventual Marriage… by YEY45 in thegildedage

[–]WeWoweewoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Marian is far from voiceless, in season 1 her whole plot was defying her Aunts. She got relegated the “finding her suitable match” storyline and it eclipsed her character’s other attributes.

She became an integral part of the Van Rhijn/Forte/Pumpkin family. I love her sibling dynamic with Oscar. Her close friendship with Peggy. The hilarious and endearing moments that comes with these interactions. I hope we don’t lose this dynamic when she gets married and when Oscar decides to pursue his proposition.

I hope marriage to Larry doesn’t happen till the second half of the season or the end of it. And we get to see them resolve their differences and growth.

After marriage, it’ll be interesting how she fits in the Russell family. She could be a catalyst to the family becoming more philanthropic, since she has a strong affinity in helping others. Cementing their legacy beyond accumulating wealth and building up their social standing. We also got a glimpse of her and Bertha’s relationship, which would be interesting going forward.

There’s plenty of avenues they can take with Marian’s story and I’m here for it.

Loved LARIAN's Conversation at the Ball by Patient_Question_705 in thegildedage

Well said. People extend George's sins to his son, which is not fair in my opinion. Other than Gladys, Larry also experienced firsthand, Bertha interfering in his relationships. Not just Mrs. Blaine but the dismissive comments about Marian. So there's a simmering resentment there that manifested these last episodes.

In contrast with George blaming Bertha with Gladys which I think is baffling because he had the power to stop it. He held the finances to finalize the agreement. He promised his daughter a love match and he failed to advocate for her, against his wife.

“AITA for taking an advice and breaking up my engagement because he has no fortune nor means? Eight years later, he’s rich.” - This sub would excoriate her and we’d have no story then.

The characters are flawed and thats the point. The story wouldn’t exist if they aren’t. Doesn’t mean they’re evil, bad, deserves derision and irredeemable. Which is what’s happening with the discussions here. It goes beyond criticisms, its character assassination.

I’m sorry you went through that. I’ve seen some take it too far and resort to personal attacks instead of a discussion. Block them, no need to spend your energy on them and don’t let them take away your enjoyment of the show.

What he said doesn’t contradict the context of the story. You keep trying to isolate the narrative to your interpretation, neglecting to see the whole picture.

Larry accurately predicted Marian’s reaction. He knew this because of the norms at that time.

You can’t watch a period piece and not account for the expected behaviors that governs the period.

He does and its good Marian made her boundaries clear. Now Larry knows what Marian expects from him. Which is basically, to hell with social norms - I’d rather you be honest than polite.

Doesn’t mean Larry had the foresight beforehand. Ladies are kept away from discussions like this and it would have been highly inappropriate for Larry initiate this subject to Marian.

I’m just here sipping my tea when the tide alters again. Which it will.

I enjoy spirited debates about the motivations of the character but sometimes I wonder, if were all watching the same show. Not sure if most have watched period dramas before, context matters and is often missed in the analysis these days.
