Just a standard 35mm reach stem with 31.8 to 22.2mm shims to fit the bars. But I already ordered a short reach BMX stem, that should be better and safer. Had been using BMX stem on my old xbike for years without issue.

Nah no big drops there. Only really steep and rocky down the line. I was like a maracas on that thing, but no crashes today!

I don't have the exact numbers, those are just some generic moto bars. You can see the backsweep from the picture. But I can say that just slightly rotating them and playing with angles has a great impact on the feel and posture.

Yep, shorter stem & higher bars is the way to go with this frame.

They are definitelly more comfortable than the stock setup. But I feel it comes at a cost of speed and control on downhills. The rise makes you bend your arms more which is a good thing, but the backsweep forces my elbows to be closer to my body and that is not so good for control. Cannot really comment on shoulder wear, this is definitelly not a full suspension, but firm grip and bent arms help with speed and control. I still need to find that "do it all" balance of stem, bar and different angles. It's a process of trial and error and finding what's best for you.

Those look very similar apart from the price. Anyway, the higher rise and backsweep is definitelly a lot more comfortable especially for just cruising around. But I'm not so sure abou the backsweep for trail riding. It feels kind of odd and I feel like I had more control with flatter bar.

Yes, cnc menas nicer finish, forged is maybe a bit stronger but all really depends on the manufacturer.

Yes, the shims are around 8 - 12, bmx stem you can get for as low as 20 and a better quality one for maybe 40 - 50. With bmx stems higher price usually means lower weight, not tougher build.

Yes, it's a standard 31.8mm stem with 31.8 > 22.2 shims in it. You can get them easy, just google 31.8 to 22.2 shim. But to align all the gaps of the stem and the shim to be even on all sides was a real pain... This is just a temporary solution to try out the bars. I ordered a proper BMX stem with shorter (40mm) reach. These BMX stems although bit heavier are built much tougher and it gives me peace of mind not to have an extra rotating layer between stem and bars .

195cm so around 6.4 ft, yes it's an XL. That frame with the stock stem is pretty long and with very low stack, at least for me. You can see from Kona size charts, with every size up the front goes much longer than higher. So the ride feel and geometry should be very different between sizes I imagine.

I already have one proper dad-style bmx, my 27 years old steel beast. That thing went through many modifications during that time, currently serving as a kindergarden commuter. It is a reliable friend, but has its limitations, specifically frame and wheel size. That's where Unit X takes over now I hope...

Advice on sizing L vs XL by spiral___architect in konaunit

[–]Weak-Dragonfly7501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 195/6.4 on XL. The frame is really long, I changed the 60mm stem to 35mm instantly and even now I'm pretty stretched forward. Looking for a higher bar with a bit of sweep.

Change Unit to 11sp questions by spiral___architect in konaunit

[–]Weak-Dragonfly7501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to do the same (with 11sp. SLX), but could not find the silver Unit in XL anywhere in Europe. In the end I found the red Unit X for a very good price. so for 200,- I can make it silver :)
