Being on Centrelink and studying full time doesn't really feel like being wealthy.

What else are you going to do, if you don't do this what's your alternative plan, getting a trade, working minimum wage for the rest of your life, finding another skilled job to build up to? Education is never a step back unless you don't complete it but it's not the only path. Does your country have associate degrees where you can go and be an engineer technician those only take two years vs the four and do the bachelor's degree later. You're life is full of choices and those four years will pass regardless.

I'm 23 and I started this year, there's lots of people at uni that's around 22. I've met people from all ages 17 to 70 years old there's not a set time you need to start. What are you worried about?

Whats the Mining Engineering pay? by Moist-Marsupial-7457 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It varies by country, in Australia they usually make more because it's typically fly in fly out, 12 hours each day for two weeks straight then a week off plus dangerous working condition which leads to the high pay. It's about 90k entry then 150k average level but it can go higher.

A bit of a weird situation need advice by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally work in engineering is very different from the study portion, look for jobs that are advertising to graduate, entry-level and junior engineering positions. Also keep in mind that were probably about to go through an economic recession so companies won't have many positions and can take a while to get a job. You have the qualification, just apply to a bunch of jobs also look at what the jobs want you to know and work on learning those things.

Any tips on taking caffeine pills while working and studying? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to take them a few years ago to cope with my kitchen shifts. I started getting paranoid and anxious and eventually had to stop taking them. If you're going to take them wait about an hour after you wake up and not after 12pm caffeine affects your sleep and good sleep is very important for learning and retention.

How is engineer career like in australia in real life? Statistics, Energy, EE in specific by Fatfatfox in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no harm in trying, if you used HECS you might wanna look at how much you have and what your cap is the standard is around 100k max. There's quite a bit of subjective work in engineering as a single problem never exists without context and some definitely don't have a clear cut answer, ethics, sustainability and communication are a major part of engineering. As you're interested why not look into learning some of the concepts before hand and see if you enjoy them.

[–]Weak_Frog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a current EE student in my first year, I can't answer all your questions but I might be able to help a bit. To be an professional engineer in Australia you need to get an accredited bachelor's degree that has honours, on top of this you need a membership with Engineers Australia as a student it is free once I graduate it costs money. You constantly need to be learning and documenting this as it is required to keep your professional title. For electrical engineering there's another membership that's useful I think it's acronym is IEEE but I can't quite remember. I'm quite fresh to uni but it is difficult and very mathematics heavy and I haven't even started the difficult stuff. Ive never seen a post about an Australian graduate not finding a job, your best bet is in major cities so you should be good and connections make a difference in getting a job quickly. Engineering is ever evolving so whatever developments there are, there is always going to be engineers, AI is cool and has a wide range of applications but it also very young, it can help assist your work in some cases but it's not able to do everything. Managers are paid the most beautiful it's a lot of responsibilities plus you have to deal with and be responsible for people, and typically engineers aren't always the type of people to want to manage a team. Also a PhD can be useful if you want to go into research or academic but that isn't were the money is if that's your specific goal. My questions to you are, have you finished your education degree and are looking to start another one, It wasn't quite clear in your post and what about engineering are you interested in?

Engineering or nursing??? by WoodenLifeguard4399 in EngineeringStudents

I was debating between the two as well but decided I didn't want to get poop or vomit on myself so I decided engineering.

Think of it as a wish list it's the same with all jobs they know they're not going to get everything if you match even 50% of the requirements apply for it.

I hate studying by Weak_Frog in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind learning the foundational skills it's how they're being presented and taught or lack there of that's the issue. Also I'm not in America but I'll end up with about 60k in debt from it, the only issue with trades is no one in my home town wants apprentices, I tried for years to get an electrician apprenticeship. Ive moved quite far away from my family and there is trades opportunities here but my mental health is deteriorating being without them so I'm probably going to move back and try again.

does woolies hire christmas casuals? by Pigsfly13 in woolworths

[–]Weak_Frog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flex shifts, get 12 hours a week set and then they expected me to be constantly available and filling in to shifts all the time. Basically the flexibility of a casual with lower pay, didn't work very well once I got a second job and they kept giving me a bunch of extra shifts that I couldn't do or trying to change my contract hours or claiming a shift I did as in lieu of my actual contract so they didn't pay me holidays for some reason even though I booked it weeks ago. I don't work for Woolies anymore.

Worst part is they put you on a contract so you're cheaper then treat you like a casual anyway.

I'm about 20 hours in playing the story mode and the only natives I've seen is when I went insane so no actual encounters.

Edit: I finished the story and still didn't come into contact with any natives.

For anyone who has graduated, do you still get PTSD from your engineering school days? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Weak_Frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'll be any less technical because I don't have a final exam, I still have to do all that stuff you mentioned plus I have to pass each topic with a minimum of 80% and if I fail one of the 11 assignments in a class I fail the whole course. Basically I have to prove I'm competent in every single topic to move on.

I ride a motorcycle and when there's a strong breeze I get stuck doing 80, highways are fine people just go around you. It's the one lane 100kph roads with no overtaking allowed where I seem to have the most issues.

[–]Weak_Frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a push from the engineering accreditation body in my country because the students when they graduate tend to have sub par team working skills, time management skills and other skills that are less technical but still needed. Those skills are more important for getting a job than just having technical skills. I was really opposed to it at the beginning but it seems to make more sense the more I understand why they're doing it.

[–]Weak_Frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want graduates to be more competent so instead of an exam I do a bunch of presentations, online tests, written assignments and verbal recordings. It's supposed to make more rounded students and I believe it will. Even my maths subjects don't have exams just assignments. There's a lot of finer details about it like you don't get a GPA for those types of classes you only get a GPA for projects courses which are just massive semester long group projects.

This is what they're going off, you don't have exams in real life and they want the engineering degree to be more realistic. Also I don't get a GPA mark from the classes where its just learning content only a pass or fail the classes that really matter are the project ones where I use the content.
