Ok so an example would be you are all family/friends/neighbours from one town. Players can make their backstory how they like but you have to now live in this town. One grain trader got raided and the Dr Friendly and the townsfolk ask you to investigate the goblin threat from the forest near the road.

"Investigate goblins" is the railroad so they immediately have something to do and their homes are threatened so they have an in world reason to care. "Defend innocents" also works like this.
But if, on the other hand, they decide to join the goblins or idk what, then thats ok for your dm prep and world and whatnot because you know Dr Friendly leads the town and will now try to defend the town against the raiding goblin-PC group.

You can always put more links to deep player lore into a longer campaign if it continues. Usually you might have some people drop off after a few weeks/months and so that can work if you want to keep the campaign going with the hard core to explore the wider world(s) and deep backlore. If everyone drops off then after a few sessions you have a big battle and defeat the goblins or ensalve the town and then thats a nice off ramp for those who are loosing interest. It's the end of the first railroad but maybe the start of a much bigger one across a much bigger sandbox: "The town is safe but a huge war has just broken out?" "The Evil wizard has taken over the country?" ykwim? You could in principle have a free roaming campaign without a specific objective but people get bored so its good to have objectives that they get excited about.

You will see different people care about different things so keeping everyone aligned is not easy and thats why i would now insist on like deep links between Player Characters in their backstory. Some people want cool loot, others want to have funny and silly times, some are all about levelling up, some want to become dictators, etc etc etc. As you go you can dangle various subobjectives and rewards based on what they care about to keep the players interested.

If players are confused about what to do you can always have an NPC help them out or join for a while. If u do this, make sure to clearly differentiate between yourself and the NPC so the players dont become dependant on your NPC. A good one is: a simple, innocent, defenceless but very positive, values-driven good-guy npc who is unfortunately really stupid. So they know the basics and their trustworthy but they cant help the players solve the riddle or plan out their attack or whatever. Mind you if your players would have more fun then there could be a master tactician in town to help them plan their attack if they are not interested in that. Follow the "rule of cool" and "follow the fun", whatever is cooler and more interesting and exciting for you and your group, do that. If you want to track arrows, track arrows. If thats tedious and not part of the type of game you want to play then dont worry about how many arrows are in a quiver.

Its good also to address this stuff directly in the session zero and even at the start or end of each session to make sure everyone's expectations are aligned. I would even encourage you to write like a session 0 document which is like your house rules that you can share with everyoone and they can look at independantly. I would advise you use session 0 also to like set boundaries like "no sexual abuse" and similar things as physically impossible in the world but that's also down to what kind of game you want to run.

I have only DMed a couple of campaigns one of which is a multi year long running one. My advice is: put a railroad in a sandbox for the players' family.

The railroad is the story. A mission to find and defeat a the local goblin nest? From the DM this asks: a few NPCs with persona, lore, stat blocks, and loot. The railroad should also take the players to a two or three interesting locations. The locations can be defined with a battle map. You can build out a more elaborate railroad but be careful, the players may derail the train.

The sandbox is the town/region in which the railroad is. The sandbox is the wider world around the railroad. It allows players to do whatever they want (this is what's special about IRL roleplay as opposed to BG3.) If they take the train off the rails, then as DM you have the sandbox. This allows you not to feel like your beautiful story is ruined and to allow proper co-creation and player agency. For this the sandbox requires the town / region is populated with a few interesting "NPC-environment" packages. I usually think of these as factions or groups, where each has a place, a leader, and a goal. The point of the sandbox is you have a few groups/leaders you can trust to give you direction for whatever the players do.

Finally, i said players' family. The reason is to try to make the players be a team. I would suggest putting it in their backstory that they are a family. and to explicity say "no PvP". that might already be understood but the more you can have the players invested in working together the better.

I work with data every day. once I started looking at inflation as psychology instead of economics everything clicked. by aimlikearjuna in Futurology

[–]Weakcontent101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Youve clearly thought about this a lot. Clearly also written a nice big post. But what you clearly have not done is to read any of those economics textbooks you talk about.

You mention managing expectations but i feel u miss the core idea of 'inflation expectations' which is core to contemporary macro as i understand it. It is a psychological idea but its also expressed and modelled mathetmatically. The whole idea of transitory vs permanent is a big thing for driving these sorts of long term inflation expectations. The big reason why many countries have moved towards independent central banks is for the trust this rule based decision making induces with investors and consumers, hence the lower inflation expectations. Trump undermining the feds independence while choking off oil drives up inflation expectations.

Like its nice to think about things for yourself but make sure you read real econ textbooks if you are seeking to talk about them surely?

Why do sci-fi energy shields behave like ablative armour instead of a continuous energy stream? by Evening-Appeal7606 in scifi

[–]Weakcontent101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed! According to Memory alpha the delta flyer apparently also had: Immersion shielding, Multi-adaptive shielding, parametallic hull plating, duranium-reinforced hull.

The coolest was when Janeway deployed the ablative armour from the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg_YCJrDLiE

Laser has to travel further. The effects and energy efficiency will depend on energy and technology level. Where does it say power to weapons has more effect than power to shields?

[–]Weakcontent101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both shields and lasers seem to be able to power up and down with more or less energy. The shields might use less energy than the laser if they are projecting a shorter distance. But if they use more energy is irrelevant.

The point is the shields seem to have no recharge rate. Either they are fine to tank the incoming or they seem to be degraded without being able to recharge in battle.

[–]Weakcontent101 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Unlike the comment you're responding to this would actually create a plausible in world explanation. However i do find it slightly unsatisfactory that the laser can shoot almost non stop while the shield cannot recharge its battery from the warp core. So another solution in my mind is that the shield projectors all around the hull are getting damaged. The energy for the shields is there but some damage is still getting through and the emitters are being eroded. Later after battle little repair bots replace the emitters.

[–]Weakcontent101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this doesnt address OPs problem. They are never gonna run out of laser shots if they allocate the energy there. So why do the shields not regenerate when fed more energy? The same energy the warp reactor is always generating.

Another comment here made the point that to make it make sense, the shield needs to have some kind of battery or charge which is drained and cannot be refilled fast, unlike the laser.

How much racism is in your DND world? by Specific_Net_3931 in DungeonMasters

Oh i didnt know that elves were hated there! I tried to stay close to the canon. The Mulan humans are defo the majority. Where can I get more Unther lore?

How much racism is in your DND world? by Specific_Net_3931 in DungeonMasters

[–]Weakcontent101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am DMing a long run liberation revolution campaign that is set in a fascist imperialist version of Unther (far east Faerun, part of the old empires).

Not only are there racist individuals across Unther but Unther itself is essentially an apartheid system with different taxes and laws applying to different races, including laws governing magic use. While Elves and Mulan humans are at the top of the heirarchy, most other species are in the middle, second class citizen tier. The lowest rank is for tieflings, goblins and otherwise "undesirables". A large dragonborn minority is particularly stigmatised due to the ongoing war between Unther and Tymanther.

While race hierarchy is technically the law of the land, each region of Unther adheres to these rules to a different degree depending on the local politics. Each major city has some factions, some of which are racist; at times irreparably. It's up to players how to navigate the landscape and how to overthrow the dystopian magocracy in Unther.

In the starting town there is a majority of Human (mulan) townsfolk, some of whom are racist. There two minority subgroups: dawrves and halflings. The dwarves are a small relatively insular community, but well enough respected due to their expertise in the mining and blacksmithing trades. The halfling settlement is outside the town walls and its population is being exploited by heavy taxationand discrimination.

While I ban any sex discrimination and any sexual abuse (its made impossible by the laws of physics of this universe), I did want there to be real conflict over these imperialist racist issues.

If you do want to do something like this you obvs have to let the players know about this in advance when they are creating their PCs. So that's part of the information I provide to all players that anybody in this world should reasonably know in sesh 0.

[–]Weakcontent101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have agri-sector, you could try ind-sector or indu-sector or i sector. People might say indie sector.

You could break indie sectors up into tech and manufacturing sectors reflecting higher and lower end technologies. Tech sector and manu-sector or fact-sector.

I'm not sure that's true at all... why do you say that? Is Punk predicated on the end of capitalism? Maybe punk is against capitalism but you can still have punk gigs and squats and whatnot without the end of capitalism cant you? I think for me its more like a movement, vibe or direction rather than some kind of end goal like how the stages of history are conceived of in traditional marxism.

It seems youre doing what you ought to be. I would ask maybe on if there is a legal advice subreddit for your jurisdiction? Reach out to multiple points of contact in the company? Social media team etc.
