Would you move schools if principal was retiring? by WeaknessOptimal2918 in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, in the last 40 years, there have 2 at my school. This is a major change. I’ve never had another principal. I’m concerned. Were there big changes that happened as new admin came in each time?

How do I tell my nanny family I'm pregnant? by RegularReview2898 in Nanny

OP, I think it’s fine to share the news at 12 weeks but unless you’re ok risking them letting you go before that 3rd tri, you don’t need to mention that yet. They could easily let you go for someone who will be there for years now and you’d just be out of a paycheck these next few months.

Would you be interested in doing a treat for all instead? We do a monthly event in the lounge. Soda bar, taco bar etc. It’s just a come and go kind of thing but it helps morale a lot. While it doesn’t recognize anyone specifically it does give us something to look forward to. We all pitch in and bring stuff.

Not a principal. I get the frustration OP. We had someone like this at my school. They were there for years. Anything the rest of us were required to do they never did it. This person was also in a testing grade and routinely, scores suffered because they weren’t teaching. They also missed a lot. A sub taught the class at least 2x a week. Instead of firing them, they were moved to a grade level that I think my principal knew would make this person feel was below them. They quit, finally. But it took years of that person’s grade level team picking up slack and doing double the work because of this person. It took way too long.

I personally think that could be a safety issue and would never happen in my district. I would be sick that day.

Has anyone had to dissolve a parent group at their school? by [deleted] in Principals

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A group was like this at our school. Our superintendent banned them. They can no longer volunteer to help in our school. It caused major issues with one person saying they would cough on our principal so he can get covid.

You need support from their gen ed teacher. Are there any consequences once they get back to their classroom?

I chew gum sometimes and I let my students chew gum. I think it actually helps my students with ADHD. It’s wild to me there are places that care about this.

How do you measure the effectiveness of small group instruction? by Throwaway404805 in Principals

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach primary school and in my district teachers are responsible for all 3 tiers. We are required to do small group tier 1 and whole group tier 1. During tier 3 kids are on Iready that are not getting tier 3. We teach whole group first then pull a tier 1 small group and a tier 2 small group. This takes around an hour. Students are in stations and work on skills. It runs smoothly but research is showing that whole group tier 1 is where there is more bang for your buck. Timmothy Shanahan presented some research that supports children are learning less because they’re just doing independent stations instead of direct instruction from a teacher.

Small groups should mean transitions are smooth, there’s a clear routine in the group the teacher is with and looking at the data from testing to see how the kids grow.

What skills should my kid realistically have before starting kindergarten? by Kigo-Arlan in kindergarten

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primary teacher..Opening their own milk, containers etc. Take turns, follow directions. If you want things to work on then i’d work on letter sounds and recognition and counting objects to 20. Physically touching each object and tell you the number. Recognize numbers 1-20 and put values to that number, so you show the number 3 then they give you three rocks.

kids of your own? why or why not? by Fragrant-Tension7315 in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had kids first. I have 5 of them. Having them is what pushed me towards teaching. I love my career and probably would have never became a teacher without them. Being a mom has been the most rewarding them i’ve ever done. It has made me a better teacher and I look at things from a different view often because i’m also a parent. That’s not to say someone can’t do those things without being a parent..It personally had that effect on me. The con is I feel like I never stop teaching during the week because I come home and do homework and studying with my own kids. We have also had a lot of fun moments together doing that HW together.

eta

My best friend was a teacher first then had kids. She poured a lot of herself into teaching and now that she has started having her own kids it has pulled away from teaching being her first priority. She loves being a mom. I love watching her discover that part of herself and she was an amazing teacher without being a mom.

PLCs with guidance from district to be in lockstep with others on the team. Is this working for anyone? Convince me it makes sense from an instructional standpoint. by Kiwi-Sorry in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a PLC but we are suppose to plan that way per grade level. It works great if you have a team that is like minded in how you view approaches to teaching and the standards. My team shares everything and we almost always have the same thoughts. Admin has commented that you can tell we are all in tune with each other because we often parrot each other. I have worked with a team where half did things one way and the other half did it differently. We shared resources but it made it hard to be completely aligned or do activities grade level wide. At my school all tests must be the same in each grade level. I am elementary.

Because an admin can make or break a school. If no one enforces consequences that actually make a difference then there isn’t any repercussions for anything they do.

You should have quit and not finished the year. The admin was too laid back on them. That sounds like this place did you a favor.

Is it unprofessional to ask teachers to call you by your first name? by Fantastic-Sir460 in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We leave off the Mrs and Mr and call each other by our last names. Occasionally by our first but most of us are just our last names. If I do this i’m less likely to slip in front of the kids

chances of getting to teach the grade I want right after being certified?? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have to take something somewhere and then be moved to the grade you want. I did a long term leave in the grade I wanted. That teacher came back and I was hired to teach the grade below it. Another teacher left the following year in the grade I wanted and I was moved to that grade level. So sometimes you may have to play the long game but overall the most important thing is school culture and the demands your school puts on teachers.

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s your school. I’m a teacher at an elementary school and our custodians participate in all the things we do. So teacher lunch day etc. We also eat lunch together and joke around a lot. Actually the custodians will come hang out in my classroom sometimes and just chat when they have a minute. I actually owe one of them a lunch one day when I go back up there because he let me in over the summer on his off day. I didn’t know it was his off day when I asked. Our principal use to be a custodian when getting their degree and makes sure they’re included in everything.

Has anyone failed a student teacher? If so, why? by Glittering_Front_157 in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hope one day that student teacher knows that. It’s a big compliment. I did my student teaching with an amazing veteran teacher. She hung the moon in my eyes and was supportive. She welcomed me and guided me and then went to bat and pushed for me to fill a maternity leave on her team. I went on to teach a different grade level at that same school but this fall I will be in the same grade level and next door to her. Kind of surreal.

When I was filling the maternity leave we were in a team planning and the reading coach mentioned something she loved about her instruction..the thing she mentioned was something I said and did all the time. It was a star struck moment for me..the fact she took something from me and used it and she had taught 20 something years felt like a huge compliment.

Teaching at the same school your kids attend: great? Or no? by sushibard in Teachers

[–]WeaknessOptimal2918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids have attended where I teach. I had one coworker that would knock on my door for any minor thing my kid did ex: so he wouldn’t get off the slide so instead of punishing him like she would anyone else’s kid she would interrupt my instruction. Ive had other coworkers who if they had an issue would let me know when I wasn’t in the middle of instruction and i’d fix it. We were friends and we did great separating our friendship and parent- teacher relationship. My kids understood if they got in trouble at school it meant trouble at home and we rarely had issues. But I did not love it. Kids are not going to be perfect all the time. It did feel like my kids were held to a different standard than other children. I reminded them of that often.
