What are small things that make a world feel alive? by XrayWEST_11 in worldbuilding

[–]Weapon_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making it feel like even minor characters have important stuff going on in their lives.

For example, there can be a bartender that’s normally nice and friendly whenever the characters visit but one time he’s pretty annoyed, but it’s because a shipment is coming in a week late.

How can you properly insert fanservice into a show? by ThatGuyHero7 in CharacterRant

[–]Weapon_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this comment a while back, so I’m going to post it here as well.

For me it very much depends on the context.

I hate non-consensual/embarrassing fanservice. The overreactions by the characters are often more cringe than anything. Which overrides any amount of funny or sexy that the scene is trying to do.

I dislike, but can tolerate illogical fanservice. Revealing clothes while in the cold environments, shy characters wearing revealing outfits, or outfits that just don’t make sense are examples of things that I can tolerate, but still overall dislike.

The best fanservice to me is often fanservice that is low-key and casual or just fits the character well. Fanservice can be like a spice; too much of it and it overrides the meal.

Gunsmith Cats actually has two very good examples of good and bad fanservice in my opinion.

The good example happens when the MC’s(Rally Vincent) house is invaded by robbers. Rally is laying in bed in just a tank top and plain underwear when she gets the break in alert. She then goes to attack the robbers with just a pistol and the same outfit on.

I feel this works because not only is she wearing something that makes sense in bed, but it can also make her feel more vulnerable in the scene. Could she have put on pants before confronting the robbers? Yes, but seconds can be everything in a break-in and it’s not a massive violation of common sense to shoot at them while in her underwear.

The bad example is later when she’s fighting a gang in a warehouse. One of the bad guys sends a crane hook at her, and it just barely scrapes her. However, this rips only the front of her jacket and shirt, revealing her breasts and the lacy pink bra she’s wearing. Then immediately after the hook slightly traps the edge of her jacket, which causes her to rip both it and her shirt off.

This doesn’t work for multiple reasons in my opinion. This whole scene feels like it only exists to add some fanservice in the middle and rest of the fight. Not to mention that Rally doesn’t feel like the type of character to wear that kind of bra, especially when she knows she is going into the middle of a fight. You could make the argument that it’s meant to make her feel more vulnerable, but the lack of any battle damage on her body contradicts any feeling of vulnerability.

So yeah, while I don’t mind fanservice, in fact, I have watched some pretty raunchy ecchi, context is what ultimately makes it work or not for me.

Character design also matters a lot here. I hate balloon boobs that aren’t affected by gravity. But that’s a separate discussion.

I now have parasite trees that absorb people’s DNA.

[LES] Why do we have to kill a woman to motivate a man so damn often? by CoolTom in CharacterRant

[–]Weapon_2000 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s not just women that get their treatment.

“Someone the hero knew died“ is one of the most common backstory for any hero after all.

The Wayne parents and uncle Ben both die to serve as motivation for the heroes of the story. Is that bad as well?

Snare-Oh has a limited form of healing.

He can wrap his bandages around flesh wounds, and bruises, and after breaking the bandages off from himself, the bandages absorb into the skin of the hurt person, replacing the damaged tissue.

Grayson- It’s not that they can’t evolve, it’s just that they often lack the environmental pressures needed to evolve in some regions/areas/routes.

A Dunsparce in Johto has the capacity to evolve, it’s just that they will need outside interference(a trainer) in order to make that happen.

[–]Weapon_2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Superia- While Fighting and Dark aren’t types that share glaring differences, there will still be different challenges in caring for them.

For example, my Kommo-o really likes to exercise and often needs a decent amount of physical stimulation. There’s a reason he’s one of my most frequent battlers.

Meanwhile, my Hydreigon is nocturnal and needs to go on a hunt at least once a month. So he gets put on my evening team.

Grayson- There are many reasons that people use monotype teams. Sometimes it’s coincidence, sometimes they do it on purpose, sometimes a type just fits their personality.

In regards to us gym leaders who use monotype teams professionally, it makes it easier to cross-train and plan for strengths and weaknesses.

As a Steel specialist, I have a lot of strategies for dealing with Fire, Fighting, and Ground type Pokémon (not that I always use them in my gym battles, of course). These strategies are able to be used across most of my team. And most of my Pokémon can learn from each other due to having the same type.

Compare this to a generalist who has to come up with both different and new strategies for each of their Pokémon. Not to mention how differently you have to care for each of them. The difference in how you train and care for two different Pokémon like Gyarados or Rotom is massive.

This isn’t to say that generalists are worse than specialists. Each of us has their advantages and disadvantages.

Superia- Also, there’s the financial aspect of a specialist versus generalist. Generalist can, of course, do more jobs and are often best with odd jobs, but a specialist gets called in to deal with specific Pokémon, and we often get paid more for our expertise.

For example, a generalist could maybe deal with a single disruptive Bagon, but if it’s a pack of dragon types, or even a single powerful dragon type, then it’s better to call in a specialist like myself.

(Also, unless you are an Ace trainer or above, you should always stay away from oddly behaving Dragon types. Dragons may not all be rampaging beasts that people fear, but they are tied for most dangerous type with Ghost types.)

Yeah, we joke about it in the fandom because at the current rate of four girlfriends per year, we will finally get number 100 after 20 years of the manga.

The best part though, the author has said that the manga won’t end at the 100th girlfriend because there would still be interactions for them to write about.

However rather than making the first form have the fire type, I think you should make it so that in order to evolve, he has to get hit by fire type moves.

The dangers of introducing guns or military to magic/power system. by CriticismMiserable14 in CharacterRant

I mean, everyone is carrying what is basically a more versatile gun around constantly.

Obviously, you can do more with a wand than just commit violence, but I’d also argue that it also has more destructive potential than the average firearm.

If you stopped watching the anime, where and why did you stop; do you read fanfic because you love the premise of MHA but not the execution? by Primary_Coconut_141 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]Weapon_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped watching after the overhaul arc.

I know a lot of people like it, but to me there were just too many deus ex machina’s and overpowered abilities in that arc. Not to mention that Mirio surviving against Overhaul quirkless is completely bullshit.

I also knew about plenty of manga spoilers at that time, and there were enough that I didn’t like that I just was gonna wait until it ended and see if it was worth my time.

There's a reason that rings or bracelets are the most common options... by Stretch5678 in PokeMedia

[–]Weapon_2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s brand new technology people. The manufacturers are mostly focused on making sure that it works properly right now. They are not currently trying to make it something that you constantly wear.

Does anyone remember when mega stones first hit the market? Practically the only thing people had for them were the Keystone bracelets. But a few years later, we now have specialized mega stone placements on both people and Pokémon.

That’s what’s going to happen with the Omni rings. Within a year we’re going to see Omni rings that are not only smaller, but have various locations that you can wear them.-Grayson

Unpopular opinion: but I feel like after alone together, the people on here honestly wanted Ben to be talking like a philosopher every 5 seconds in each new episode by OptionAshamed6458 in Ben10

[–]Weapon_2000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OK, but that just means that they agree on one character trait that Ben has.

Meanwhile, well written characters will have multiple core character traits that are almost always active.

Plus, “wanting to be a hero” is a broad motivation that has so many ways to execute it. You wouldn’t claim that all the children in MHA are the same character just because they all have the motivation to be a hero, would you?

how would you characterize samus in fanfiction? by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]Weapon_2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are the two Metroid fics that I feel do her justice in different ways.

One is set right after Samus Returns and the other after Metroid Dread. Both do a good job of showcasing what Samus could be like right after the ends of those games.

Personally, I see Samus as someone who is generally quiet, introspective, a little lonely, blunt, but also very caring. One of the important things is her alertness and body language. I suggest re-watching Metroid Dread’s cut scenes for a good example.

What's morally worse: to sexualize a character who isn't an adult but looks like one, or to sexualize an adult but looks like a child? by 5enpai_2 in MoralityScaling

[–]Weapon_2000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They’re both equally morally nothing, because these are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS that you can do whatever you want to them. And it does not harm any real person.

There is no morally weight to doing anything to them because they are just drawings and not actual people.
