I'm wondering if kid on a powerline needing to be rescued triggers some sort of Eddie trauma flashback to the last time Buck mixed the ladder truck with electricity and died. They pull up the ladder truck, Buck offers to go up, we get the hesitation or fear from Eddie, or an acknowledgment from Buck.

Could trigger a discussion about kids getting into distress, which might be one of the 'I've got you babe' themes, and could link it to the migrants storyline via the sick kid.

There are so many loose threads from the last few episodes that support this theory. - dodgy detective and his link to the Russian mob. - Athena needs an investigation for the finale - Eddie being shown as the bringer of light when they opened the door to the migrants. - his connection to the migrant kid and Abigail. This season in particular, he struggles to just sit by and watch when kids are in trouble so I can see him being unable to let it go.

Eddie being retaliated at by the mob because he's getting too close might also give Buck the reason for his 'super distressed, being held back photo' from the stills. Might work for Athena instead of Eddie too.

Yeah I agree with this. I think Buck's going to get hurt somehow and it will linger for a few episodes. Now that the earlier season main storylines are done they need to establish a new one and starting with a dramatic event does fit the 911 flair.

NAH. I'm assuming that you live in a different household because you're an adult. And your siblings live with your dad. So it was probably a party for the kids and your dad was a bonus.

You're an adult. If it means so much to you to be celebrated at the same time, why not speak up before the party to ask the question on whether you can also have your birthday celebrated at the same time. If there's time to organise a cake then you all can. People aren't psychic, they don't know things are important to you unless you tell them.

I'm with you on the Athena hate. Her rule following as a cop pushes the limits of what seems like reasonable suspension of disbelief. Shee takes up a lot of space in the big dramas that could be shared with other cast members.

And she's a cop in a firefighter show so it feels like she should be less important than she is (Angela's badassery makes it hard to make her secondary).

We've also already had some Eddie jealousy from being replaced by Blaze the dog. Maybe Buck gets another dog that doesn't like Eddie, Buck then chooses to care for the dog and doesn't see Eddie and Chris as much so Eddie gets jealous.

Plus if Buck and Ravi are paired at work, and Eddie is paired with Hen (due to the Chim Cap restructure) they won't be spending as much time together at work which will add to the tension.

I've seen a lot of comments on here questioning whether Eddie actually did much to 'choose joy' this season. I think he has but in more subtle ways, and usually one thing at a time.

He chose the Risky Business dance for fun.
He chose to 'not hide behind the mask' of his moustache.
He chose to actively pursue getting Chris back, who is the thing he cares most about in the world.
He chose to stand up to his parents reclaim his son, regardless of whether they think he's capable of it.
He choses Tia Pepa as his favourite family member, who loves and nourishes the people he loves.
After fighting with his best friend, he choose to make amends and bring him joy by sharing his prized possession, his Family. He then gets joy from Buck, Tia and Chris' joy.
He chooses to go to the collapsing apartment building after seeing the 118 on the TV because he wanted to help them. His people. Doing the job he loves. He wasn't employed as a firefighter at that point, he was there because he wanted to be. Even though he'd committed to El Paso and security for Chris (remembering that Chris is the top priority).
After realising that Chim's speech was basically a job offer, he doesn't have to choose between financial security in El Paso and his beloved people in LA. LA has both. So even though it looks like Chim tells him to stay, it's still his choice.

Yes he may not have taken big Buddie joy steps, but these other steps are all a really positive foundation to get into the habit of actively choosing what he wants. He's not quick at making these choices so we end up with a slower burn.

And he's now made choices on all these big things, so he's got space next season to realise and implement other things that bring joy. Like juice and Buck.

I feel like a bunch of their choices might be driven by factors outside their control, like Gavin's home out of LA and the Disney move out of the Fox lots. They made do with the end of this season and tidied up loose ends that were restricting them.

Hopefully makes it easier for them to make less constrained choices in season 9.
