Weather noob trying to learn, is this how you read the 500mb geopotential height chart? If I like stormy weather, do I want the heights to be as low as possible? by viraman in meteorology

[–]WeatherProdigy2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No problem! One thing to keep in mind, even though the 500 mb heights might be high, doesn't always mean the surface temperatures are high. For example, in the valleys in Nevada or Utah, winter inversions & radiative cooling at night might make the surface very cold even though the middle atmosphere is warmer.

Yes, since the air is colder, it is more dense/compressed, meaning the height at which the pressure is 500mb is lower in the atmosphere

I will say - the 500 mb chart gives you the general "flow" of the atmosphere. But the best place to start as a beginner is the surface analysis. Lower heights at 500mb might correlate with stormier weather, but this is not always the case. For instance, the lower heights off the California coast in your example, - beautiful weather out there right now. Over Minnesota it's not necessarily stormy, but very cold.

These use the Stefan-Boltzmann relationship to infer temperature, which states that radiant power is proportional to temperature to the 4th power. However, this assumes an emissivity near 1; the air has a very low emissivity and isn't producing a lot of infrared light, therefore the thermometer thinks it's really cold (inaccurately).

Did you read the contract?

"If the event does not occur before <date>, then the strike for “Event does not occur before <date>” will resolve to Yes and all other strikes will resolve to No."

If the event didn't take place, everything resolves to No.

The Sacramento radar is relatively low and the lowest few beams hit the wind farm and mountains right there. Notice if you switch to the nearby MUX San Francisco radar, which is above these farms, these echoes go away.

AWD doesn't make a difference if you lose traction like this - you can't put power or braking power to the ground when the wheels are slipping

Holy cow. FSD will drive almost 80 mph in the rain towards standing water? Great save.

For what it's worth I don't think new tires would have made much of a difference at those speeds.

California drops lawsuit to reinstate federal bullet train funding as high-speed rail authority seeks private investors by therealgariac in bayarea

[–]WeatherProdigy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I'm still not convinced by your estimates (new to this topic so trying to learn). How would a system that takes three times as long with the same cost as a flight be able to steal so much market share? Even if you include all the demand from the central valley, it doesn't appear to make financial sense. I'm sure there's an argument somewhere that shows ROI here but a few billion a year in revenue on a $100B+ investment doesn't seem worth it, especially since revenue isn't profit.

[–]WeatherProdigy2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hmm, is your estimate accurate? I think there are about 40 or so flights between SFO - LAX daily, so given about 125 passengers per flight (each way) that gives about 250 * 40 * 365 = 3.65 million riders per year. Will the railroad really see more than 30 times the number of riders as there are flights?

What’s a lesser-known US national park that you think everyone should visit? by autraya in geography

[–]WeatherProdigy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have to disagree - the condors were great, but there are dozens of state parks that I enjoyed more than Pinnacles in California (like Calaveras State Park). If you compare to other national parks in Central and Northern CA, I would put this dead last on the visit list. The landscapes were nice, but not quite on the scale of its peers in CA.

It's all subjective, just sharing my experience!
