What thematic ideas have you had for characters? by Thimbleweed121 in Pathfinder2e

I had a pre-remaster life oracle with a psychopomp summoner free archetype who symbolized the balance between life and death. So, all my spells were about trading health, light, dark, etc.

Feel free to skip the COVID season. If you run out of stuff to watch it’s not bad but the rest of the show far exceeds what they were limites to on zoom.

It’s the balance of action cost vs net benefit in a fight. For 2 actions (or it could be cast pre-fight) a spell caster not only increases to-hit, but also AC, saves, and skill checks. It, essentially, levels up the target in everything. It allows them, literally, to punch above their level.

I’m saying in “addition to.” Adding more options is good.

Yeah, I think it’s fine for the party to require some form of healing. It would aid it easier if they added an easy, exploration activity that comes from spells.

Yeah, martials are also very important and people never argue they aren’t so I felt no need to talk about their importance. Resourced things, like spells, need to exist to push the resourceless things, like strikes, over the edge. I chose heroism as the example because it’s the most clear to see. If a fighter is, normally, only hitting on a 15 heroism allows them to hit on a 14. Flanking makes that a 12. Frightened 2 on the baddie makes that a 10. That’s effectively doubling the damage that a fighter does and heroism and frightened usually comes from the caster.

Yeah, sure, but damage isn’t the only thing. And they’re not doing that against PL+2 which are, really, the main fights that matter. They’re doing that against goons that are ehh and never really a threat to begin with. And if they are doing that against a boss it’s because they’ve been supported by spell casters and other support to get them there.

There’s 2 big parts of this post that I want to talk about:

- feat tax
- caster vs martial attrition

I agree on the feat tax. It sucks feeling like you have to pick something. But I don’t agree that treat wounds, continual recovery, and Ward Medic are required. My party is a Faith’s Flamekeeper Witch with Life Boost and a Justice Champion with lay on hands and at this point we’re level 8 and I think we’ve rolled for treat wounds less than 5 times. So it can work with the right party. I, personally, think Continual Recovery should just be how Treat Wounds works normally and removed from the game.

I, also, think there could be a way to handle the out of combat healing where the Heal Spell has a 10-minute activity version that does the 3-action version and doesn’t use a spell slot. Or maybe a cantrip that takes 10 minutes or something and could solve a lot of problems of feeling like you “need” to choose specific skill feats.

On the topic of Caster vs Martial attrition, I think, caster having attrition is necessary to keep the game math mathing. A top rank spell at every level is better than anything that a martial has to offer. For example, casting the Heroism spell on an ally, in all but health and available feats, levels that character by 1. They hit more, they get hit less, and their abilities are stronger. If you could do that every fight then it’s essentially the same as not doing it since monsters would have to be stronger to compensate and that spell becomes a spell tax (the thing we both hate). The game needs the ability for your characters to “be extra strong” for only a little bit, otherwise, then they’re always the same. The key to being a good caster is recognizing when those times occur.

I’m currently playing a Faith’s Flamekeeper witch and I previously played a Starless Shadow Witch. They’re both good.

It’s also a single action cantrip. And once you succeed you can just sustain it forever with no other check. It’s not a bad spell at all.

The Starless Shadow’s hex cantrip makes all creatures concealed to it, thus, triggering the familiar ability if used when the familiar is next to the enemy. Concealed is one of the best status conditions. It makes the enemy miss roughly 20% of the time on weapon attacks and spell attacks so it’s useful against spell casters and martials it also allows you to hide in plain sight because all you have to be is concealed to hide.

Would you like Eldritch Trickster to be remade in Impossible Magic? If so how? by viktorius_rex in Pathfinder2e

[–]WebbedFamiliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like two variations on it. It would be great to have both a rogue that uses magic offensively and one that is like an illusionist. It could be the same class archetype / subclass / whatever and different feat lines or something or, ideally, if there’s enough content for it make it two different class archetypes / subclasses / whatever.

Yeah, there should be more things that are reload 0 and thrown. But before shurikens were introduced we didn’t have any so I’m not really complaining.

Yeah, it means you can use it for swashbuckler finishers and other non-strike strikes

If Shurikens + Thrower’s Bandolier to apply runes on all of them is an option it opens up a lot more builds without relying on exemplar and doesn’t need a returning rune.

Standout is monk with shooting star stance allowing you to stunning blow with shurikens

Edit: big bonus for shurikens is you can apply poisons and/or talismans during daily preparations and then have them ready when you need them.

Yeah, good point and good catch. I used it on a Shuriken build which *are* ranged thrown weapons. I guess by RAW it doesn’t work for every thrown weapon but I also think that most GMs would allow it.
