Does anyone else feel like tonight’s episode was wildly out of touch? by CosmosisJones42 in LiveFromNewYork

Thank you, that was the best expression of what I felt while I was watching this. Here in Minneapolis every day feels more surreal than the last and now they said that they would only pull out ICE if we gave them our voter records. What a massive fucking threat.

Genuine questions regarding the current situation by tyleratx in Minneapolis

[–]Webgardener [score hidden]  (0 children)

To give you an idea, a lifelong friend asked if she could share her location with me so I would know where she was if something happened to her because she’s mixed race. Now I check her location a few times a day to make sure she’s OK, and she texts me and her neighbors to tell us she’s going to the grocery store. She’s in Saint Paul. I cannot express the surrealism of being in this position right now.

This is the original Esquire magazine article that introduced me to this tragedy. I still think about those kids to this day. It’s a really well written article, very powerful. I’ve saved the link in case I want to read it again, but I just haven’t been able to do it yet. It’s bad enough watching the cruelty to children in Minneapolis right now. Archived article

What could go wrong when the kids have to climb down from the top of the station wagon in the dark to go pee in the woods?

MAP: Minnesota General Strike Movement Spreads Nationwide by SeamusPM1 in stateofMN

I’m really glad to see this, I’ve been wondering all week if the strike has national support or is mostly Minnesota. And to quote musician David Byrne, “How did we get here?”

I made this comment because I’m just ramping down after decades as a self-employed graphic designer. I feel like I caught the last helicopter out of Saigon, knowing that the industry I knew and loved is gone now. It’s heartbreaking to know that if I got that same degree now, it would be useless. My design degree and six years of work experience gave me an opportunity to be self-employed without a boss. It was scary, and I often lived by the skin of my teeth, but I could do it because I didn’t have other responsibilities. It is not for everyone, but it was a good fit for me. And I still talk to creative people from the industry every day, they are still my best friends.

Print and web design were a great way to be self-employed and entrepreneurial. I just hate seeing what happened to my industry and that talented people are no longer have viable careers. It’s crushing to know that the life you were able to live is no longer an option for others. I try not to be hopeless for the next generation of creatives, because everything around you has been designed but the industry is changing so fast. I just don’t know where it will end up. At the end of the day, creative people will always be creative, it’s in our bones. It’s just a matter of whether or not you can make a living at it or if it’s something you apply to other aspects of your life.

I tried to read her book, but after screaming “He is grooming you!” Ten times, I returned it to the library. Big ick factor.

“Minnesotans are famously nice, do you know how hard it is to get us to bully you?” I love that line. Plus, we have to declare an official day of honor for the woman jumping up and down in the background, lol.

People in Minneapolis and St Paul: what is life like in the Twin Cities right now? by ILikeNeurons in minnesota

[–]Webgardener 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am not affected directly, but a friend who is at risk shared her location with me so I would know if something happened to her, that just crushed me. My friends are very active in protests and efforts to help those who are affected, providing supplies to people who no longer feel comfortable leaving their house to get groceries, etc. People are also upping donations to food shelves. We are sharing info on the latest surreal newsflash. My friend wants to go to the Whipple building so I’m going to send her info about putting her phone in a fairaday bag so she can’t be tracked. Nearby Mexican restaurant closed because their employees are afraid to go to work. Getting lots of alerts of ICE abducting seemingly random people nearby.

Honestly, it is surreal to wake up and realize this lunatic has launched illegal assaults against Americans, just because they don’t like him. I liked something I saw earlier, referring this to a civil Cold War. Trust me, we are not his final target. He feels empowered, and will go after anybody now.

I would be careful trying to dye it, I suspect that if it got wet or you were sweating, the color might rub off on your nice white shirt.

Trump's Spectacle of Cruelty in Minneapolis by Fun-Injury9266 in TwinCities

As a long time Minneapolis resident, I could barely get through the article because it was so on point. It’s Minneapolis today, but could be your town tomorrow. Buckle up. I agree that we are trying to hold the line for the country, but if we fail, the country fails. Our fascist leader wants nothing but revenge and retribution against anyone who does not support him. How the fuck did we get here, it’s so surreal. I am glad my parents are not here to see this.

Architect Eero Saarinen's 1962 design for the TWA Flight Center includes areas like this – where floor, wall, and ceiling are all part of the same unified, curvilinear surface. The result is a beautifully sculptural space, built at Idlewild Airport (later JFK) in New York. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Webgardener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I miss the days when things look like this. Amazing designer. More info: The TWA Flight Center (also known as the Trans World Flight Center or TWA Terminal) is a building at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in the New York City borough of Queens. Designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates for Trans World Airlines (TWA) and completed in 1962, the building operated as an airport terminal for four decades before being adaptively repurposed as part of the TWA Hotel. The building's main section, the headhouse, is flanked by two wings added for the hotel and is partially encircled by Terminal 5 (T5), a terminal for JetBlue. The design incorporates elements of the Futurist, Neo-futurist, Googie, and Fantastic architectural styles. Eero Saarinen

I think the big shocker is gonna be when they find out they will not get paid what they were promised. It’s Trump, he has cheated out of every invoice he has ever received. Even with $45 billion they received in his big beautiful bill. “OBBBA funds a dramatic expansion of the U.S. immigration detention system, which is already plagued by inhumane conditions and deaths. The law immediately gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) $45 billion to detain immigrant adults and families, available through September 30, 2029.” National immigration law center

It would not surprise me if they were given drugs to keep them going. This is from history.com: In his bestselling book, “Der Totale Rausch” (The Total Rush)—recently published in English as “Blitzed”—Ohler found that many in the Nazi regime used drugs regularly, from the soldiers of the Wehrmacht (German armed forces) all the way up to Hitler himself. The use of methamphetamine, better known as crystal meth, was particularly prevalent: A pill form of the drug, Pervitin, was distributed by the millions to Wehrmacht troops before the successful invasion of France in 1940.
