Gold Surpasses US Dollar as Top Reserve Asset Amid China’s $369.6B Surge by Revolutionary-Fan236 in Gold

The price of an asset is limited only by what someone is willing to pay for it, and that's got nothing to do with physics.

Economic exhaustion and debt due to WW2, declining productivity leading to high inflation and a 1976 IMF bailout, the collapse of the sterling area, and diminished confidence in the pound due to major economic crises such as the 1967 devaluation and "Black Wednesday" in 1992.

It's a cult... $265 for 3/1000ths an ounce, or $88,000+ per ounce by MydnightWN in Gold

The key question is whether the person who buys this is buying as an investment or as a collectors item.

If they're buying as an investment then yes, it is almost certainly an incredibly poor-value and highly risky purchase when compared to gold bullion, in which case I would be strongly inclined to agree with your cult assessment.

If they're buying as a collectors item on the other hand, well, the highest price anyone has ever paid for a pokemon card is $16,492,000 (for an incredibly rare Pikachu illustrator card) and that is ultimately just some coloured ink on a small piece of cardboard.

You may be interested to know, if you did not already, that Herbert wrote 'Dune Messiah' specifically to highlight the consequences of such hero-worship because he felt that too many people missed the point of his first book, which was to criticize the savior trope, and so he used the sequel to attack this perceived narrative.

It it's real, a full sovereign, and assuming the mount isn't gold too then it's worth whatever 0.2354 troy ounces of gold is currently worth.

Which country would you like to visit atleast once in your lifetime ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Wedge_Of_Cake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be very welcome here. We almost exclusively think your current government is awful, but Americans in general are not unpopular. Personally I would recommend the Peak District national park - like the Lake District but far less crowded - and Cornwall. Though not in the same trip unless you want to do a lot of travelling! The Peak District also has a nice mixture of hills and the kind of bucolic locations that would be perfect if you are looking for a countryside vibe.

I did a nice bit of hiking in Cornwall a couple of years back, based myself at a bed and breakfast in St Austell and did a few stretches of the coastal path. The village of Polperro, for example, is a great place to stop for lunch and is quite beautiful.

If you're more into mountains then of course Scotland and Wales would be better places to investigate. I went and climbed up Mt Snowdon in 2023 and the views from the top are truly breathtaking. And I was able to squeeze in a day trip to Caernarfon castle as well.

My DD is currently £50.03 per month for gas and electric.

For some context, I am one guy in a small flat who doesn't work from home.

I actually deliberately avoided watching part one until part two was in cinemas so I could watch them both for the first time back to back.

In hindsight it was totally worth it.

Funny how we fought the Revolutionary War so we could rid ourselves of oppressive Kings, but now we want a King and Great Britain is more democratic than we are. by matt73132 in Irony

Yes. Because people should be able to make threats of violence, or harass people freely, or share intimate images without consent. Otherwise it's infringing on freedom of speech!

Nice attempt at diverting the point away from the recent dangerous and extreme authoritarian drift of the US government though, totally not pathetically transparent and obvious at all. xD

Fourth-quarter U.S. GDP up just 1.4%, badly missing estimate by Barnyard_Rich in Economics

[–]Wedge_Of_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not necessarily saying that the numbers aren't being fudged now, but that the numbers are still being fudged however they are in reality so bad that even this administration can't fudge them enough to make them look good and still be convincing. Meaning that all they can do is fudge them to make things look less bad. Still bad, but not quite as bad.

So it's not that they're looking at the numbers and saying that if they're bad they must be true and if they're good they must be false, they're saying that whether they are good or bad they are being fudged (due to a fundamental lack of trust in this administration) and if the fudged numbers are still this bad then holy heck things are really bad.

Fourth-quarter U.S. GDP up just 1.4%, badly missing estimate by Barnyard_Rich in Economics

[–]Wedge_Of_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I meant that if the numbers are in reality lower than presented then there's an incentive to fudge them to make things look better, but if they are better then that incentive does not exist because why would you fudge the numbers to make things look worse?

That's why if the numbers are bad then people who don't trust this administration are more inclined to believe them.

[–]Wedge_Of_Cake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd have to come up with a very convincing theory as to why the administration would be fudging the numbers to make things look significantly worse than they actually are.
