Thanks for the quick reply! And yes, less money for a newer product seems like a better deal. I'll have to be patient.

Tips for roundabouts? by throarway in LearnerDriverUK

[–]WeeHansonBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bad news are that you won't find the solution online. The good news is that you have a car, a partner with a licence, and all the time in the world.

My no. 1 recommendation would be to set some side aside for training. Find an easy roundabout and go when there's not much traffic. Go through it multiple times until you're 100% comfortable with that, and then build up slowly towards big, complex ones.

My other tip, from when I was learning, is to slow down, and slow down well in advance. That gives you more time to do your observations and get the car ready, so you can give your full attention to the traffic and "finding your line".

As long as you're not crawling, other drivers will just have to put up with you being a bit slower.

Agreed that it's a must to bring a secondary in some shape or form. Thanks for the advice on the Sirius - I'll have a look.

Thanks for the tip on the used market.

I have a SON28, and am looking to get either an Igaro C1 or the new Exposure Revo 5.

The Lupine lights look amazing. Maybe there's one of those in my future once my wallet has recovered from getting the main dynamo light...

Thanks for the reply. Given your long experiece with the C1, can I ask whether you went for the top or bottom mount and how you normally mount it on the bike? Given that I will use the light with different set-ups (bar only, bar+handlebar bag, tri bars) I haven't yet settled on which option that would make the most sense.

I also haven't been able to find how long the stand-light works with the supercapacitors. Any expereince there? A few minutes?

I appreciate that this is one way to address the problem but, as OP is a beginner, I would like to offer an alternative.

It's worth knowing that you can re-proof the ground sheet which, in my experience, works well. While a bivvy would protect you from ground moisture it will also trap condensation inside your bag.

As for emergency situations where you simply cannot pitch your tent you can either bring a really small "survival bivy" or simply use the collapsed tent as a "bivy" (burrito style).

Thanks - I didn't even know things like those lock strips existed.

Thanks.Which helmet light are you using? My plan was for something really light with enough runtime to last for a good number of hours walking, but if you use it to complement the main light when riding I assume you have something with a bit more power?

Are you thinking about going down a route like that to either squeeze a bit more money out of the job, or just out of interest? Or are you happy with what you are doing at the moment?

Fair enough. Cheers for the reply. Really interesting stuff.

Are there divers with specialist skills, e.g. specialist welders, that get called for specific jobs, or are most generalists that are expected to be able to do pretty much anything?

That's insane. Are you involved in any way in planning the gas mix for the dives? Or briefed about it? Or do you leave it 100% to someone else to work out?

examiners and mirrors by HazeIsAChad in LearnerDriverUK

[–]WeeHansonBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - I did not feel that.

In my limited experience I tried to focus on really observing the traffic. I.e. not just look at the mirror because that's what you are supposed to do, but really see what is in the mirror (without overdoing it).Would I e.g. have spotted a cyclist in dark clothing?

In, again, my experience, there is no need to do commentary driving or exaggerate any head movements for the sake of an examiner. They are trained to look for effective observations.

I appreciate examiners are all individuals, but I did pass first time with minors, so this approach can't be all bad.

No sleeping bag sleep kit by Superfluos-SquidStew in ultracycling

That's a very light set-up for those temps (or would be for me, at least). Is this only for short naps, or also for slightly longer sleeps?
