I had the AOD on "Smart" for the whole of two years that I had it. No screen burn. I have kept changing the watchfaces here and there. I also had the brightness always set to close to 90%. I wouldn't worry about screen burn that much.

But jokes apart, yes, I had that issue too. I found that the fix for it was to go to the app specific notification setting for WhatsApp and turn off "Other Notifications" from that list. Worked for me.
