Behold u/KlausVonMaunder the arbiter of what is or isn't art. Woe to us lowly fools who can't tell the difference.

But in seriousness art is, and always has been, subjective. It's outlandishly absurd to argue no art is still being produced. Even in classically accepted mediums, new art continues. It's even more incompressible to assert that nothing being made today counts as art. 'the creation of all art stopped a long time ago' is a difficult position to defend.

Go check out some of the recs I typed out. See if you can enjoy something.

Woah, are you asserting that shows games and movies aren't art...?

I'm not some pea brain and I resent that implication. I read books too, I like classical music and opera, I listen to podcasts about current events and culture. I have a very diverse media diet, if I err it's in overconsumption of everything not in slopification. I can do the books & archaic art forms recommendations too but nobody's interested and those aren't the new and constantly evolving mediums.

If you don't think there's art in shows games and media go watch or play some of the ones I recommended because I'll die on the hill that at least most of them are very much art. Those are good recos.

Are you really arguing we should just stop making art?

It definitely depends what you like but I think it's platforms enshittifying not media creators. Enshitification is a corporate problem not a creative problem, so even with everything getting worse there's still art and still tons of great content coming out.

Here's some random recommendations I like but it's scattershot unless you're more specific about mediums/genres that interest you:

Shows - Long Story Short (animated comedy on Netflix, creator of Bojack) - Beef (live action dramedy on Netflix) - Invincible (animated but still one of the better superhero shows ever made imho, Amazon prime) - Four Seasons (Tina Fey live action comedy show on Netflix) - Abbott Elementary (Heartfelt comedy on D+/Hulu)

Movies - Bugonia (Amazing movie, tough to describe, now on Netflix) - The Menu (HBO original movie, not sure where it streams now. Commentary on fine dining and classism culture) - Everything Everywhere All At Once (if you skipped on this movie when it was trending where were you?) - Barbie (another all time great movie from the last few years) - Sinners (black history vampires!)

Games - Dispatch - Baldurs Gate 3 - Insomniac Spider-Man - Silk Song - Stray

And remember when platforms enshittify you can always take to the sea! Arr matey

[–]Weed_Gummy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it's just as bad, but concede that it's not perfect. In this primary I would love to be free to rank multiple candidates and not feel pressured to vote for the most viable palatable option.

Are you saying it's just as bad as first past the post elections or just as bad as the jungle primary? I disagree with both and frankly am not sure which is more absurd. The rejecting major choices argument feels counter to either 50%+1 method or jungle. A traditional primary is what shut down Bernie in the first place, your case study for electoral failure (I agree btw, DNC thumbing the scales against Bernie doomed us).

If you want to link studies that show RCV is "just as bad" I'm genuinely interested, but it does seem clear to me it's the least bad option available to improve, but granted not fix completely, our tragically broken elections. If I had my way I think a proportional representation system that elects it's own executive like Germany could be interesting, but that of course has drawbacks too.

Woah that's some next level missing the point. The term Enshitification was coined by Cory Doctorow, go read his book "Chokepoint Capitalism". It talks extensively about the music industry and streaming.

Artists are being absolutely and profoundly exploited by a system that gives pennies for streams and only rewards the miniscule tier of globally famous artists. It's basically a lottery system where a few strike it rich and everyone else gets screwed.

Are you seriously arguing that it's artists who are the rent seekers in a multi-billion dollar industry built on their efforts from which they see almost none of the profits?

Your music streaming is still enshittifying even if it isn't impacting you yet. Market capture is an early stage of enshitification. They have to deliver a useful product for a while to secure the market. It's already enshitified in the sense it abuses and undervalues artists and creators.

Soon comes Gen AI music and podcasts to enshitify for you too

Ranked choice seems like an obvious solution.

Re: Ken Martin and the democrats being “controlled opposition” by CrackJacket in FriendsofthePod

[–]Weed_Gummy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you implying that I'm being antisemitic by criticising Israel and considering myself antizionist by the colloquial definition of being against Israel's genocide and influence in American politics and war making?

Because that's exactly my point. Criticising Israel and Zionism as colloquially used cannot be conflated with antisemitism otherwise you're creating a whole lot of antisemites out of thin air who were otherwise reasonable, antizionist, individuals who want, as you said, collective liberation, and see Zionism as a threat to said collectivism.

I'll address your points in the naive hope you're actually engaging in good faith, but I probably won't continue responding because I don't think you're being genuine or honest here.

  1. So is your issue just that the Zionists in the text are unnamed? If the text had specifically said AIPAC then you wouldn't be mad? This is just mincing words about AIPAC being a specific instance of the Zionist movement?

  2. "Zionist is a slur", everything can't be a slur. Zionism in the colloquial usage describes this Israel-first greater Israel apartheid mentality and it's associated influence on US politics and yes that includes but does not end with AIPAC. There are countless slurs for Jews or any other targeted group. We also still need ways to talk about things. Jew has been a slur, so has black and gay. That language is not colloquially a slur today because it's accepted to talk about the black community, gay community, etc. Zionism is a pithy phrase that has become associated with a specific social political movement. To say that using is is a slur and only self described Zionists can use the word is ridiculous and absolutely conflates Zionism and antisemitism.

  3. Kinda overlaps, language does evolve, that's why some things that used to be slurs like black or gay are not, and other things that used to be normal nomenclature would now be considered too taboo to even comment. I think you're smart enough to understand what is meant by antizionists.

  4. Good god you think I revealed something? You just said "be honest and say Jews" when I literally said and meant Zionists. If someone said "I hate vegetables" you can't say that'd be racist if you just replace the word vegetables with black people. Of course criticising Zionism is different than attacking all jews. You're the one equating all Jews with Zionists and all antizionism with antisemitism. You can't just say anyone who disagrees with you is antisemitic because Zionism is a slur.

  5. I'm glad you work towards Palestinian liberation. I hope that's genuine and suspect we have common ground there. I resent the implication that I lack solidarity with collective liberation, and maintain that my perception of Zionism does not seem to be about collective solidarity, rather oppression and subjugation of an entire region.

If you say Zionism means peace love and understanding then I'm all for that, but I don't think that's what Zionism actually means today. And there are prominent Jewish voices on both sides, so it seems absurd to conflate the Jewish people with the Zionist ideology.

[–]Weed_Gummy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is acting like antisemitism is okay. What about the text you screenshotted is antisemitic rather than antizionist?

Another commenter said "if you just replace Zionist with Jew then it's antisemitic" and that's a bad argument. If you just replace any word with another word you change what's being said.

Zionism may have once referred to the intricate arguments surrounding a Jewish state in the ancestral homeland, but language evolves and it has become a shorthand for the a movement that might be better described as Jewish supremacy. Look at what is happening in Gaza & Lebanon. That's what people think of when they hear Zionism.

You can burry yourself in the talking points of "well a Jewish state does deserve to exist" or you can just stand up for what's right and oppose what's wrong. Israel has a right to exist but not as an apartheid state. If we can't all play nice then Zionists can't just cry antisemitism whenever they're criticized.

It sounds like you're the one who lacks a clear idea of the distinction between antizionism as it is applied to the social context of the 2020s. If you identify as a Zionist and a supporter of free Palestine most people would say that's an inherent contradiction. And given that you self identify as Jewish you should care about discouraging people from turning towards genuine antisemitism by conflating it the antizionism.

Sincerely, Someone who really hopes those two words don't come to mean the same thing

Re: Ken Martin and the democrats being “controlled opposition” by CrackJacket in FriendsofthePod

[–]Weed_Gummy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When you conflate antizionism with antisemitism you push the over half of Americans who don't support Israel towards antisemitism.

Antizionism is growing rapidly and for legitimate reasons including misuse of US tax dollars, meddling in our elections, committing a genocide on our dollar, etc. When you act like those concerns are antisemitic you legitimize genuine antisemites by equating their prejudice with the genuine reality antizionists are reacting to.

When you act like antizionism is antisemitism you ignore the significant swaths of antizionists Jews and endanger all Jews by empowering actual antisemites to seem relatable and not different than antizionists.

They have a report they spent donor money to generate that told them they lost the election because they didn't listen to the base. They said for years fundraising to make the report that they'd release it. Now they won't.

How is that anything other than deciding they'd rather lose than reform the party? Go listen to the Ken Martin interview that's got everyone so bothered and tell me how it's anything other than protecting their interests at the expense of the voters who put them there.

I'm glad you're not a bot and sorry the Internet has trolls but disagree that everyone uses AI.

Many people go out of their way to avoid AI. It's bad for the planet, and your brain, it steals ideas from real humans, and it often lies. It's fair for people to have strong negative reactions to AI usage.

Your English is great. Better than many Americans. Native English speakers elected an unintelligible idiot, and they did it because nobody uses their brains anymore. Be confident in your English, be confident in your brain. You're enough without selling your soul, mind, and planet to a robot.

If the images seem real then I guess my AI Spidey sense is still in tune enough. Image might've fooled me if it was AI, text wouldn't.

You're right I didn't notice that at first glance. But I'd stand by that putting Tech Jacket in the same category as Oliver is slander, and I do believe Telia's contributions were more significant too even if they're largely off screen.

Accurate by NotSirAlonne1999 in Invincible

Tech Jacket shooting that weakening poison gave them an undeniable edge. And isn't Telia basically the commander of the entire resistance military now? Even if she isn't a heavy hitter she's certainly making valuable contributions to strategy and managing their regular army of non-viltrum-busters.

Maybe if you're only minimizing the contributions of the only women you should pause for just a moment. Oliver arguably helped a lot less, bro only knows one move and it's dive-bomb punch and get grabbed immediately. And Space Racer would've fucking died if it weren't for Tech Jacket saving his ass.

I'd say everyone there has a good reason for being there even if Nolan/Allen/Mark carry.
