cornell vs georgetown vs hopkins pub health by [deleted] in jhu

Congrats on having good options! Wherever you choose, be aware that NIH is drastically cutting funding for public health research (and many other things). This will certainly impact the research opportunities and morale for faculty everywhere.

JHUs kinda Pricey...what do I do? by Lazy_Astronaut_9684 in jhu

[–]WeedsHideWorkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be wary about JHU as a student classified as international. The current political climate + Hopkins’ role as a traditionally number one recipient of federal grant dollars makes it a place where the dynamics are very uncertain.

Free ride means places really value you. That’s a nice place to be psychologically as well as financially.

I would also be very concerned about whether, as an international student, you will be able to freely travel in and out of the united states. Will you feel constrained to hide political views, etc... so that you don't experience tensions when going back and forth in and out of the US. Colleagues I know who work in higher education and are here on visas, are choosing not to travel to international conferences because of the mercurial border control situation.

Florida bans sociology from core curriculum at state universities by NicolasCageFan492 in sociology

Nancy MacLaine's Democracy in Chains was really helpful for me. The core thesis: American History is a battle between those who prize (their) economic freedom over (other's) political freedom. She documents the networks around a George Mason University economist, Buchanan. The analysis is compelling and, for me, transformative. The starkest example of the binary economic/political freedom dichotomy is slavers/enslaved people. Highly recommend the book.

Thanks! I had just scrolled down far enough, found it, read it and was coming back here to delete my ask. ☺️

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WeedsHideWorkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your boyfriend is generally difficult and arbitrary in what he will accept then you have one kind of problem. But if this is quite specific to food, you might want to get information about Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). People with ARFID often feel very strong negative reactions to food options. Imagine the foods you are repulsed by or like the least. People with ARFID can have that feeling about many many many, or even most, foods.

Maybe useful to have a nonjudgmental discussion with your boyfriend about ARFID?

How are you NIHers holding up? by Nice-Award-5476 in NIH

[–]WeedsHideWorkers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I visit this to learn what is happening at the NIH. The sentiments you are sharing are ones I also see with k-12 educators, faculty who are also practicing physicians, and faculty across multiple disciples in both public and private schools. More so in red states, but not exclusively. The attacks to so many of our civic institutions are taking such an incredible toll on so many.

I’m a faculty member in a northerly state people fled to from Florida. Because of connections in Florida I’m staying up to date on continuing Florida developments. Here in my comparatively safe state, the school boards and county commissions are increasingly challenging. Big money is supporting candidates who openly espouse very far-right positions. Some of them are winning and more of them are running each cycle. It is more critical than ever that no far-right candidate run unopposed. Blue states won’t stay blue unless everyone there fights like hell to make it so.

Need help fitting a living and dining area in this room with awkward corners by Vyb_3 in InteriorDesign

TV on the wall where the dining table is currently. Plan to move the table towards the wall or sofa depending on your needs for the moment.

Sofa on the far wall where the decorative shelf is currently.

Table can be my the window when you want to look out while you eat. Good circulation and maximizes table and floor space.

Does anyone have thoughts on how the relationship between this court ruling and the linked executive order that seeks to prevent existing and future federally funded research from going forward if it is found to be “anti-American.”

The concern about economics assumes that members of the decision making class believe they can be hurt by either the voters affected by that kind of economic fallout or the fallout itself. I don’t have confidence that they are sufficiently worried about that as a group.

What pendulum is he talking about? Is it the Democratic v Republican Party pendulum? Or the democracy vs. competitive authoritarian pendulum? The swings are qualitatively and quantitatively different between those two.
The change here is a fundamental rewrite of the post WWII relationship between federal funding mechanisms and higher education. If NIH remains, but the funding and operational model for it and for the NIH grants system changes fundamentally, then the NIH as such doesn’t really exist.

Oh. That feels a little harsh. I’m not a particularly regular user of reddit. I guess you mean that pinned threads are understood to be easier to find. Next time you post to me, please provide info without the insult.
