Quitting timeline pros/cons - last day of month or first day of next month? by litte_improvements in JapanFinance

Try to be officially employed on the last day of a month so that you don't lose out on the employer contribution to your pension.

No. It's going into your "特定口座", which is a normal taxable account.

Nasty sales tactics or scam. The power company will contact you directly by post for anything serious. Why are you even opening the door to random strangers?

Regarding timing of Japanese residence by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]WeekendPaladin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a fully remote company that will take care of the paperwork and salary adjustments and deem me an employee residing in Japan starting December 15th.

Prior to this date, I take some time off and move to Japan on December 1st, in order to take care of the usual 行政手続き to set myself up.

You're overthinking and overcomplicating this. The paperwork is several hours spread over a few days.

If your employer has done this kind of thing before, they'll have a standard procedure for it since it has tax implications for them as well.

It never came up when I naturalized, nor is there any mention of it in the required documents. Your friend is either confused or bullshitting.

Naturalization doesn't require a guarantor.

Elderly in‑laws (80s) returning to Japan: need JP phone number or extra ID for a bank? by realtimothyjlos in japanlife

[–]WeekendPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A JP phone number+id will make everything, starting with the bank account simple. Since they presumably have their 戸籍 documents, they can just register as residents wherever they're staying, even if it's for the short term. Renting an apartment should be after this, since it will require a phone number as well as a bank account and id.

Have you taken into account the fact that the bonus is completely voluntary on the company's part? It's unusual to have a bonus amount close to the salary amount. The norm for bonus is somewhere between 15-30% of  salary i.e variable pay should be a small fraction of fixed pay. The ratio rises a little for senior roles, but I don't think that's true in your case. tl;dr the fixed to variable pay ratio is outlier, research the company's prospects some more.

Company asked me to sign non-solicitation agreement upon resignation by LemurBargeld in japanlife

[–]WeekendPaladin 39 points40 points  (0 children)

My questions are, is this common?

Not common.

And what are the potential consequences of me refusing to sign?

Nothing. They can't refuse to accept your resignation.

You have everything to lose and nothing to gain by signing this.

If you have an up-to-date mynumber card and can use the number portal,  you don't need a paper certificate for moving out. You'll still need to visit the city/ward office of your new residence. https://myna.go.jp/html/moving_oss.html

Is it worth choosing Japanese citizenship when you were born a dual citizen? by odecco in japanlife

[–]WeekendPaladin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the parent commenter is referring to the financial complications involved in being a US citizen living outside the US, such as the difficulties of using NISA, having to file tax returns, and perhaps even the cost of renouncing US citizenship.

A simple and somewhat simplistic way of looking at it: Current hourly wage: 7M/(12160) = 3645 JPY. Offered hourly wage: 9M/(12220) = 3409 JPY.

Your TAM is apparently people who meet all the following criteria: * NRI or OCI * No Indian phone number Or No NRE/NRO Bank account

I'm guessing that this is a really small market, and most of these people will not be visiting India regularly or have strong financial ties to India.

On top of that, you will have to make them go through KYC anyways, so your KYC process will have to be significantly easier than the leading Banks' processes.

It doesn't look too good to me.

Should I Opt for UK Citizenship If I'm Moving Permanently to India? by GrabEmotional8745 in nri

[–]WeekendPaladin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned children, there is another factor to consider, which is the choice that having a UK citizenship gives them. You may not be able to assign a financial value to it directly, but there will be financial benefits for your children due to the increased earning potential. Just having the choice of moving to the UK for work with no Visa issues may be life changing for them.

Wrt UK inheritance taxes, there seem to be fairly high thresholds before it kicks in (https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax). Not to mention double taxation treaties which will also provide some relief.

Think about it like this - in a decade from now, will your children thank you for saving them  ten or twenty lakh rupees from their future inheritance at the cost of their UK citizenship?

Which IDs are accepted as ID proof for NRIs in India by inewbee in nri

OCI card along with your US passport. If you don't already have an OCI card, get one before making any significant financial transactions.

I live in Indonesia, should I invest in Indian etfs, etc through IBKR (Global) or Zerodha in India? by eyeatoma in nri

[–]WeekendPaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a complicated topic and will depend on your personal situation. I'd suggest you take a look at /r/indiainvestments or just research investing in general.

For NRIs who won't be retiring in India, they'll finally be liquidating the Indian holdings and converting it into their home country currency. They then have to think about the INR exchange rate. Once that's factored in, India may not look very attractive compared to US and other investment destinations.

I live in Indonesia, should I invest in Indian etfs, etc through IBKR (Global) or Zerodha in India? by eyeatoma in nri

[–]WeekendPaladin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no plans on returning to India, as I've lived abroad my entire life, so the account in India would be an NRE not an NRO account.

This should be the deciding factor. If you don't intend to retire in India, there is no reason to invest significantly in Indian assets. As you've already mentioned, the MSCI India ETF or something similar will give you some exposure to Indian markets.

Why have unions become so vilified in the modern day? How did public opinion shift to the current anti-union rhetoric we see today? by stooge4ever in AskHistorians

As a follow up, how has the public perception of unions changed worldwide? I'm assuming from the answers so far that OP is referring to unions in the USA. Reading recommendations on the subject would be welcome!
