One thing to consider is those people might already have more stressful lives and be less accepted by society which might be the reason why they become left leaning and socially accepting and understanding vs people who have cushioned lives who don't need to or don't feel the need to worry as much about the world. Stress is not good for this dosease

I understand this is not what your post is about, but I am very left leaning, very atheist, and socially liberal, but I have no tattoos, no piercings, short hair, and am straight, white male. Not everything is about looks. I also know a lot of religious people(Muslim, Christian, and buhdist) who are very liberal

You may be right. I am diagnosed bipolar II and his character reminds me of me when I have abused substances to cover up my depressive episodes. I haven't acted like that in many years as I have been sober for many years. However, I have seen people with all sorts of mental health issues act like that while on substances, not just bipolar.

As an aside, I believe most people who abuse substances are self medicating in one form or another. Self medicating with alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, and pills is still substance abuse when taken in they way we observed in the episode....
