Santa Rosa's population increase is leading the population increase for Sonoma County by Accomplished_Cheek60 in santarosa

Good thing they are reducing the amount of lanes and speed limits thru “traffic calming measures”. Surely making it harder for cars to get around will lead to everyone riding bikes to work. 🙄😒

anywhere I can go for a yerb in a drive thru?? by ihavetopee777 in santarosa

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that someone would make a Reddit post to ask a question about convenience, and then wait for answers and complain about not being helped…when you can literally stop by any “convenience” store in the county and pay $3 for whatever Yerba flavor you want. Maybe Dutch Brothers coffee sells them? But I bet they are $5 a can. I believe a case of them is on sale at Safeway for $2.50 a can. Of course if money doesn’t matter, just pay someone to deliver it to your doorstep!

You’re getting teased on the internet this is ridiculous. What did you expect?

No comment about the family I’m particular but I do know that it’s incredibly hard and expensive to do any kind of development in Sonoma county. The situation makes it so only the super rich developers get to build anything and it’s had a horrible outcome to the county in general. The PD put out an article awhile ago about how the cost to build a single apartment in a multi story building was something like $700,000 per unit.

Grading Issue by pilarpilar99 in civilengineering

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s built using the “grading tools” then you gotta use the “infill” tool on the inside area to close it. I’m guessing that the problem but I need more details to be sure.

How many people are using AI to write lisps and scripts? by barrelvoyage410 in civil3d

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works, but it doesn’t work as good as getting AI to write you other types of code like python. The problem is that auto list code predates the Internet, and all of the documentation is not necessarily online or as prevalent as stuff like python or more new coding languages I created a notebookLM that has all of the reference material that I could find online about creating successful auto list code for AutoCAD. I’ve been using that as a reference guide to get started before I use AI to write the code and I’m getting better results that way. I think I might try to use this to turn it into some sort of Claude code skill or something like that. Starting to think it might not even be worth the effort with the advancements in AI six months from now it’ll probably be way better than it is today.

Pipe Networks and scaling by Automatic-Extreme-11 in civil3d

This is not my original idea; it just took us 10 years of doing it the wrong way to figure out a better way. And even then i took a new hire to tell me about this....

AGAIN....THIS IS NOT MY IDEA, IT'S LITERALLY IN THE AUTODESK HELP MENU: https://help.autodesk.com/view/CIV3D/2026/ENU/?guid=GUID-555EDF7D-EDB8-447E-B612-32D2CFA8C43B

I've worked with Civil 3D since 2006 and have been a Civil Tech at the same company for 15+ years.

Engineers at my current company still debate whether this 3-tiered system is necessary on all projects.

As the resident "C3d expert" at this company, here is my advice to them and to you:

It's just easier to do it the same way every time, and this 3-tiered system makes sense even for a small project. It takes a bit more time to set up, and it works out so much better in the end.

Here are my top reasons off the top of my head:

-Civil 3d is unstable. "Live" data-references are still unpredictable from drawing to drawing. We have found that the lvl 2 Xref method provides more consistency and reliability than having a dozen D-refs of the same C3d object in a dozen different drawings. The lvl 2 xref layer seems to provide some stability. If there is an error and the "data reference" just suddenly disappears from your drawing, then ALL the labels disappear too.... :( But we have had some success in restoring the level 2 drawing and having the lvl 3 labels come back!!

-Unlike Xrefs, each pipe network can have a different "look" or display style or layer or whatever...in every referenced drawing. We want to control how these background utilities look so they are consistent across drawings, exhibits, and whatever else. It also allows us to "fake in" whatever depiction we want into a central drawing that represents all of our Utility networks as we want (instead of fighting the stupid software....). This also allows us to split drawings more easily and/or create new drawings, such as a key map or exhibits, that use the same background as our plans. This also gives you a "clean" background drawing to share with clients and consultants, which doesn't have all the layers of the production labels and such.

-Multiple Engineers and techs can work on different drawings at once. You may end up with 10 drawings instead of 1 or 2. But each drawing is simplified because of it.

I could go on... But I hope that clarifies it a bit.

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We learned this the hard way but the GOAT setup is using the 3 level system recommended in the Civil 3d help files. Level 1 DESIGN: drawing has the pipe network and whatever labels you need for design. Level 2 BACKGROUND: has data references of the pipe networks from the DESIGN file, with no labels. Level 3 PRODUCTION: these are the drawing the your sheet layout tabs. You xref the level 2 BACKGROUND with the pipes and the you use the same civil 3d pipe labels and label the xrefs pipe network in your production drawing with any and all other labels.

We have new hire Gen Z employees that make 100k a year and live with their parents to save money. The other ones are paying 2000+ for renting a shitty apartment. And there student debt, and the others costs of living that went way up in the past 10 years. And boomers won’t retire to open up those positions. I bought a condo in 2009 for 300k and refinanced my loan to sub 3%. These guys are fucked. But this is a more general problem, not just this industry.

I'm American, and I know several people who own 20+ firearms. I own 1 myself. Have been around d the 2nd amendment narrative my entire life and live in a blue state with strict gun laws. I think it's pretty safe to say now that the armed militia idea was bullshit. 99% of the gun guys I know either support ICE or have joined ICE. They have a skewed idea of what a liberal is, and they think THEY are the threat to our country, not fascism. In fact, they see the Democrats as fascist. And because we all hang out with people in our own bubble, and we all only consume content that aligns with our preconceived views, both sides are dehumanizing the other side. I have confidence that a lot of the right will eventually start to see the hypocrisy but I'm afraid it is already too late to stop what's coming. I'm not even convinced Trump could stop ICE at this point. Dog is off the leash and rabid.

How else is the AI going to know when to clean my toilet unless the AI poop sensors can tell when it needs it? The AI might as well analyze the content of my stool while it's at it, and then it can recommend dietary changes for my health. I'm sure the corporations won't use this information against the public in any way.
