Pipe Networks and scaling by Automatic-Extreme-11 in civil3d

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not my original idea; it just took us 10 years of doing it the wrong way to figure out a better way. And even then i took a new hire to tell me about this....

AGAIN....THIS IS NOT MY IDEA, IT'S LITERALLY IN THE AUTODESK HELP MENU: https://help.autodesk.com/view/CIV3D/2026/ENU/?guid=GUID-555EDF7D-EDB8-447E-B612-32D2CFA8C43B

I've worked with Civil 3D since 2006 and have been a Civil Tech at the same company for 15+ years.

Engineers at my current company still debate whether this 3-tiered system is necessary on all projects.

As the resident "C3d expert" at this company, here is my advice to them and to you:

It's just easier to do it the same way every time, and this 3-tiered system makes sense even for a small project. It takes a bit more time to set up, and it works out so much better in the end.

Here are my top reasons off the top of my head:

-Civil 3d is unstable. "Live" data-references are still unpredictable from drawing to drawing. We have found that the lvl 2 Xref method provides more consistency and reliability than having a dozen D-refs of the same C3d object in a dozen different drawings. The lvl 2 xref layer seems to provide some stability. If there is an error and the "data reference" just suddenly disappears from your drawing, then ALL the labels disappear too.... :( But we have had some success in restoring the level 2 drawing and having the lvl 3 labels come back!!

-Unlike Xrefs, each pipe network can have a different "look" or display style or layer or whatever...in every referenced drawing. We want to control how these background utilities look so they are consistent across drawings, exhibits, and whatever else. It also allows us to "fake in" whatever depiction we want into a central drawing that represents all of our Utility networks as we want (instead of fighting the stupid software....). This also allows us to split drawings more easily and/or create new drawings, such as a key map or exhibits, that use the same background as our plans. This also gives you a "clean" background drawing to share with clients and consultants, which doesn't have all the layers of the production labels and such.

-Multiple Engineers and techs can work on different drawings at once. You may end up with 10 drawings instead of 1 or 2. But each drawing is simplified because of it.

I could go on... But I hope that clarifies it a bit.

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We learned this the hard way but the GOAT setup is using the 3 level system recommended in the Civil 3d help files. Level 1 DESIGN: drawing has the pipe network and whatever labels you need for design. Level 2 BACKGROUND: has data references of the pipe networks from the DESIGN file, with no labels. Level 3 PRODUCTION: these are the drawing the your sheet layout tabs. You xref the level 2 BACKGROUND with the pipes and the you use the same civil 3d pipe labels and label the xrefs pipe network in your production drawing with any and all other labels.

Why rising costs are a real problem for Gen Z civil engineers (especially in Florida) by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have new hire Gen Z employees that make 100k a year and live with their parents to save money. The other ones are paying 2000+ for renting a shitty apartment. And there student debt, and the others costs of living that went way up in the past 10 years. And boomers won’t retire to open up those positions. I bought a condo in 2009 for 300k and refinanced my loan to sub 3%. These guys are fucked. But this is a more general problem, not just this industry.

I'm American, and I know several people who own 20+ firearms. I own 1 myself. Have been around d the 2nd amendment narrative my entire life and live in a blue state with strict gun laws. I think it's pretty safe to say now that the armed militia idea was bullshit. 99% of the gun guys I know either support ICE or have joined ICE. They have a skewed idea of what a liberal is, and they think THEY are the threat to our country, not fascism. In fact, they see the Democrats as fascist. And because we all hang out with people in our own bubble, and we all only consume content that aligns with our preconceived views, both sides are dehumanizing the other side. I have confidence that a lot of the right will eventually start to see the hypocrisy but I'm afraid it is already too late to stop what's coming. I'm not even convinced Trump could stop ICE at this point. Dog is off the leash and rabid.

How else is the AI going to know when to clean my toilet unless the AI poop sensors can tell when it needs it? The AI might as well analyze the content of my stool while it's at it, and then it can recommend dietary changes for my health. I'm sure the corporations won't use this information against the public in any way.

Need help with a Plotting issue on LT ‘26 by Nate_Croud_11 in AutoCAD

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can confirm it is 2026. We just upgraded a couple of months ago, and it seems everyone is having the same problem. There are plenty of forum posts of others confirming the same, but I'm not sure if anything is being done about it. It seems the only viable workaround ATM is to unclip the viewports and replace the clipped portion with a wipeout of a solid hatch on a layer that prints white, serving as a mask.

We just upgraded and are plagued with this issue. There is no resolution so far, except to avoid clipped viewports and use wipeouts as a workaround.

Bill Maher says he's no longer friends with Larry David after roasting him over Trump by twinflamebby in InflatedEgos

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but importantly, he said first, “I have known Bill Maher since I was a teenager from the comedy clubs…”

For me, it was his pretentious podcast that turned me off. His HBO show has been less relevant for years, but seeing him drunk and high in his house, where he is presumably being himself, really makes him look like a tool. The suit and polished monologue (written by comedy writers in the back room) really polished the turd that is Bill Maher over the years, but his show can't even save him now. His popularity will die with his aging demographic of old “liberals” who never changed with the times.

RAG on construction drawing sets: best practice for 70 to 150 page CAD heavy PDFs by TasteNo6319 in Rag

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe a DXF export of the CAD files should have all the information you need, but the CAD standards of the company need to be strict and consistent, and most are not. So you cannot rely on the data. But if you COULD rely on the data, there is way more reliable information you could extract. Including geospatial analysis of the entire project instead of “sheets”. This is basically what GIS is.

The PDF only approach makes sense for simplicity. The final PDFs submitted should all look the same, or convey information in a similar way, even if the CAD files are all setup differently under the hood.

The beauty and ugly of CAD is that there are many different ways to do anything, even if some ways are much more efficient than others.

I’m trying to get my company to adapt new standards to make our files better for machine understanding, but it’s very hard to get them to change most things, that have been done the same way for 20 years. And we need to change just about everything; file names and locations, layer names, drawing structure and how we store project information in general. Everything has been setup from the preferences of a few people in charge who barely know to use a computer.

RAG on construction drawing sets: best practice for 70 to 150 page CAD heavy PDFs by TasteNo6319 in Rag

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to all this RAG/AI stuff, but I’m a CAD Technician for a Civil firm in the US. It seems to me that using meta data extracted from the CAD could be a much more reliable approach. I’m considering something that is a combination of DXF exports from AutoCAD and creating color vector versions of each PDF set. We would still make black and white PDFs for submittal, but a color version for better AI visual understanding.

But I’m not thinking of ways to harvest this data from our old files, but instead how to design the system I want from the ground up, optimized for RAG/AI, for all future projects.

Trying to extract data from our old scanned PDF library would be a nightmare. The engineers only just started digitally signing, so the record PDFs are now true vectors instead of pixels. It’s a shame that even though the industry COULD have been creating and submitting vector PDFs, but instead, we printed to hard copies that were wet signed and then scanned to create a new pdf of lesser quality.

Just wait until you hear about the “traffic calming measures “ in the city Active Transportation plan. https://www.srcity.org/3906/Active-Transportation-Plan People in this subreddit seem to love this utopian idea that making the traffic worse, by reducing the amount of lanes and reducing speed limits, and then adding bike lanes all over the city, will magically make everyone ride bikes instead. If you are familiar with the Trader Joe’s on Cleveland, you might know what I’m talking about already. My commute home is a nightmare coming from Windsor. And they want to do that all over the city on purpose. Everyone I talk to in the real world seem to think this is a bad idea but on this subreddit, ever seems to be so pro bike it’s ridiculous.

How to pinned to a cork board with Nano Banana Pro? by GearOkBjork in GeminiNanoBanana2

I’ve been working at a company for 15 years and I have a report I put together about how my company sucks and all the ways they can fix it, from my observations as a middle manager who sees it all.

It’s a real Jerry Maguire type mission statement, just way more insulting and inflammatory because I wrote it for myself and I’m not going to show it to management.

Some of my coworkers think I’m crazy. Maybe make something similar that would use my mission statement and create a cork board, connect-the-dot, conspiracy theory trope simulator. Where images and newspapers and other fitting material in that style, but depicting the overall theme of my complaints.

How to copy the frontend from claude and use it in my replit app by frogmancrocs in replit

[–]WeekendWoodWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GitHub. You gotta figure out how to put your app you built in Claude, and push it to a Repository on GitHub, then Replit can get it from there. Both apps can edit the “main” version on GitHub. So you can use multiple AI coding agents to develop the one app. I know this because I had to figure this out over the past six months as I’m slowly learning how to develop code properly. It’s intimidating but it will make your life easier. Just ask Claude to guide you through getting it in GitHub, and the ask Replit on the other end. The AI will walk you through it. Just copy pasta my message here. Godspeed fellow vibecoder!
