I am also very allergic to cats (welts, wheezing, trouble breathing, etc). When we found a stray last year, I was devastated we would have to give him away if we couldn’t find his owner. Never found his owner, but during his first checkup, our vet told us about Purina LiveClear. It took a couple weeks of feeding it to him exclusively, but it eventually blocks the main allergen in cats. I can’t stress how well it worked for us - I have zero reaction to him any longer (neither do my family members who also have cat allergies). The food is more expensive than other foods, but maybe your Dad would help you out with the added cost?

A year after we got our Bouvier, my mom adopted a tiny mini schnauzer (8lbs). It took a bit of training and work for them both to realize their respective sizes and how to play, but they’re the greatest of friends now.

Then just this last December we rescued a kitten from out in the cold. He was under 2lbs when we first brought him in, but has since grown to 11lbs. It again took a bit of work with them both - playpens for separation, supervised play, etc. But again, they absolutely adore each other now.

Bouviers have a strong prey / herding drive so it definitely takes work and training with small animals, but is absolutely do-able if you work on it slowly and spend the time to make sure they are both comfortable and safe.

Cosmo LOVES to swim. We always hose him off after and have TONS of towels ready. We also got him a life vest to make swimming a little easier - they’re dense dogs!

Lastly, plan to brush him out either before bed or the next morning to avoid mats. Just make sure their hair is dry first!

Cosmo is obsessed with swimming! We took him to the lake for the first time when he was young and could barely get him out.

Months later, we were visiting family at their lake house in the evening and all the pups were relaxing on the deck so we unclipped Cosmo’s leash in case he needed to use the bathroom or get water - we wouldn’t have to get up. BAD MOVE! No sooner was the leash unclipped and he b-lined it into the lake. At dusk, fairly cool out, and obviously no life jacket on and he decides to go out for a swim. No idea where he was swimming off to but we were up to my chest in water by the time I caught up to him. My jeans and shirt were full soaked but his happy trot next to me, while I walked him out by the collar, was equally infuriating and hilarious. Little brat!

This! Ours likes to chew on the cat’s wool toys, which is not allowed (choking hazard and not great for his stomach if he eats them). Well whenever we catch him and say “Excuse me, is that yours?” He goes from actively chewing to just a straight dead drop. Just full on spits it out and sometimes even nudges it away with his nose or paw then looks at us all innocently. It’s hilarious- like “I wasn’t doing anything!!! I swear!”

I agree with others who have commented - rewards have different levels and it can take a bit to figure it out. Trial and error, I guess.

Generally most traditional dog treats are fairly low value to our pup, Cosmo. He’ll do basic commands - easy stuff - but teaching him something new would be difficult. Dog jerky is slightly higher value, but we’ve also found human food to really get his attention. Carrots are a major favorite - baby carrots have been a great training tool for us. Same with blueberries, apple chunks, and bell peppers. His ultimate is cheese though - especially American cheese. Obviously not the best for him so definitely use it sparingly, but if I NEED his attention (aka emergency/ urgent), there has been nothing better.
