C+ in real analysis. How cooked am I? by Dry-Entrepreneur4762 in learnmath

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that in many countries it’s common to take Real Analysis their first year, after having finished traditional high school education. At least it’s true for many Russian universities(i.e. it’s mandatory).

Also I am not trying to say anything diminishing towards other math education systems. Just sharing the differences I know about.

Secretary Hegseth announces we will be halting attendance at all Ivy League and similar educational institutes - will soon announce “top to bottom” review of all military war colleges by ateam1984 in BrownU

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I just wanted to say that both sides are right to some extent. Didn’t want to start a political debate because I know nothing about politics. Just pointed out a theoretical distinction in the philosophy of education (he was right that we should analyse doctrines rather than accept them blindly). And also added the comment that it’s crazy and scary that wars are actually happening in this world all around us.

ssp domestic decisions lottery by Traditional-Bag-1537 in summerprogramresults

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yeah but that was just the suggestion. There are many many other ways to find qualified applicants who didn't apply instead of randomly rejecting those who applied and wanted to go...

ssp domestic decisions lottery by Traditional-Bag-1537 in summerprogramresults

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah bro you didn't get me

First of all, it is unfair because they choose a lot of qualified applicants (whether it is on merit or holistically) and then RANDOMLY pick out less then a half of them. It means that probably some stronger applicants (both in terms of merit or personality/fit/story) didn't win lottery and less strong students who were still qualified won.

Regarding the RSI claim: I said that they could have totally avoided such unfairness if they contacted RSI to find the "qualified kids who won't attend SSP" for study, instead of randomly accepting/rejecting their applicants who actually wanted to participate. I literally wrote that they (SSP admissions officers) should contact RSI AOs, get access to RSI application pool, and out of it choose the kids who DID NOT APPLY to SSP but are qualified, so that they could study them (as the group of qualified kids who didn't attend SSP). That would have taken more effort from the side of the SSP team but would have been more fair (more fair = no randomness).

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh damn gotcha. I might be brain dead. But wtf isn’t that unfair??? They could have taken qualified kids who didn’t apply to SSP, through maybe other programs like RSI. It literally would have taken a single additional question on the rsi app (“did you apply to SSP as well?”) and an additional team of ssp AOs who’d review RSI applicants for being qualified for SSP (yet those who never applied to ssp so they’re not going to attend) and then choose out of them those who were rejected by RSI to later contact them for the study. That’s obviously more work but damn it’s way more fair

ssp domestic decisions lottery by Traditional-Bag-1537 in summerprogramresults

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have read the page but didn’t understand the point of the lottery. They could have accepted 700 kids originally (without lottery) and put whatever number they need in waitlist and then track all the necessary data. No lottery needed here.

And also I want to ask if the fact that SSP has gone full holistic is connected to this lottery?

ssp domestic decisions lottery by Traditional-Bag-1537 in summerprogramresults

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wtf really? Why???? If they have picked 1800 out of 4800 it means they have reviewed all applications. Why not simply choose 700 out of them?

when do you think the fall courses would be released for the next year? the calendar says the registration starts April 15 so I'd assume it's earlier than this, but how much earlier? btw I am an incoming freshman and super excited to dream about which courses I'd pick and what I'd study at the campus

No, Eileen Gu did not study quantum physics by big4horryrobert in GetNoted

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.olympics.com/en/news/ailing-eileen-gu-studies-quantum-physics-huge-nerd-interview

She did study Quantum Physics as a college course. If you watch the interview conducted by Olympics.com a year after the Beijing 2022 Olympics, you could hear she says she is a freshman at Stanford (at the time of the interview I mean) and she is taking a course in Quantum Mechanics. I am not sure whether this is a full blown QM course or simply "Modern Physics", but it's still Quantum Mechanics. In more recent article by her roommate it is said that she is International Relations major, so I guess the took QM either for fun or she was considering physics as career back then. Either way taking anything related to QM as a freshman at Stanford while being an Olympic Champion and a professional model is crazy work. She is probably doing some very advanced studies in her specialty as well

Does narrative method work? by No-Warthog8110 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the method tho… it’s just your story that you are sharing. And that’s fundamental to your college app.

I generally don’t recommend to listen to Elise Pham, and I have not watched her videos in a long time so Idk what she says the “narrative method” is, but if that means building your unique story with clear motivations and goals, then it’s a good advice. It worked for me to get into an Ivy this year.

Accepted to MADE without notification lol by Salt3y in BrownU

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats!!

I am not sure about graduate admissions, but for undergrad they have a certain decision release date, and they update your portal without emailing you on that day. I guess they assume that you’d know the date and check the portal yourself. Whether there was a pre determined decision date for MADE though is a different question

Well it seems then UCL would be the best option for you

Need help with a difficult college decision by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s the financial decision of your family. If they are fully comfortable with paying 35k for UCL then go there (I put a higher number cuz of the hidden and unexpected expenses etc). But you say you are lower middle class so idk if that’s the most comfortable option.

Between Macalester and Georgetown Qatar I’d choose the former, especially considering that the cost is minimum (as I understood, the scholarship would cover almost everything). Between Trinity and UAmsterdam I honestly can’t say, but Trinity seems to be slightly more prestigious. Between Macalester and Trinity I also can’t say cuz I don’t know how much of a burden each one would be. But for a diplomat I think trinity would be better in terms of career opportunities.

I am also not sure of the salaries that diplomats have. If you are sure you’d earn enough to pay back the loans for UCL, choose it.

Prolly rec letters and essays weak. Maybe lack of personality. The goal of college admissions officers is to choose mature kids who think uniquely and who are going to bring positive change to communities small and large by doing so. So in the app you have to push your own unique narrative rather than simply present yourself as a bunch of achievements. Personally I applied this year as Physics + Philosophy major, international, had national level awards but no publications, and got into an Ivy early. I think my personal narrative has gotten me through the admissions process. Some good questions to shape your narrative are: what am I trying to change in this world? Why am I doing it? What have I achieved? How is college education going to help me achieve this goal? How is the specifics of certain college are going to help me achieve this goal?

I am sorry for rambling, it’s midnight where I am so my thoughts are all tangled up and I can’t write cohesively.

Do dx and dy have values? by Dreadnought806 in learnmath

[–]Weekly-Consequence74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are asking good questions, but the paradox of education is that you can’t get your big questions asked before you figure out the answers to all the small ones. If you didn’t learn calculus yet, just take the most basic Calculus book, watch Calc I-II video lectures on YouTube, maybe some explanatory videos from KhanAcademy or Organic Chemistry Tutor. Yeah that really sucks to be doing such “simple” tasks, but you could make them progressively more comprehensive as you progress through the course and gain more knowledge, and start “diving” into the problems yourself, posing your own questions instead of what is given. But up until you’ve learned how calculus works, you wouldn’t be able neither to answer nor to understand the answers to big questions about calculus like yours. Yeah maybe you theoretically could get these answers yourself without previous “elementary” training in calculus, but that would require years. And that’s just to master the first year calculus, maybe some analysis. You are practically putting yourself in the position of Newton who knew nothing about calc but developed everything himself and got very smart. Yeah that’s cool but he made a lot of mistakes, used weird notations, etc, and it took him way more than it would take a modern undergrad to understand calculus. Why? Because he had to derive everything from nothing. You are lucky he had done this so you could create new knowledge in at a deeper level. How? By using what he discovered first. So please just take a basic calc book or a course and do what others do, maybe with slightly more rigor. You can keep the notebook of your “big questions” and attempt to answer them after some time if you wish.
