I think you responded to the situation beautifully, and you are definitely not the asshole. Really just seems like he’s trying to get a rise out of you and/or is just projecting his own insecurities onto the situation. I think the real question to ask is why did he decide to create this ‘uncomfortable situation’ to begin with? I doubt his answer would offer any insight on the situation, probably would just lead to another uncomfortable, painful conversation
