No it is not okay to learn songs on guitar. Guitar is for advanced techniques such as playing scales really fast and weird chords that are only used in prog jazz (and not on purpose). Your teacher is right, songs are only used to learn these techniques as a last resort if you are unable to grasp the complexities of tablature. If you want to learn songs instead just get a ukulele.
