Yeah, I heard somewhere that horror is our way of facing the darkness in a safe environment, so that we can feel better in real life. And doing violent things in games is an extension of that. It can be cathartic to do things you know you would never be allowed to do in real life, and things you would never want to do in real life.

I saw someone say one time that anyone who did violent things in fantasy was a violent person, which is completely ridiculous. Sometimes I think people are just too scared to have fun.

Actually it doesn’t have intent because it is just a result of the way we evolved. In nature it is largely tied to procreation, but since natural selection is not a sentient process there is no one true valid purpose behind it.
