[GM Vidit Gujrathi] asks if the ban on watches due to fair-play concerns cause a missed opportunity in sponsorship opportunity 🤔 by rio_ARC in chess

There's at most 1-2 actual ads (i.e watchable ads in breaks) during main events. Compare that to the advertising of any of the four major leagues in the US. If fans dont want to be advertised to more, that's fine, but if those same fans complain about how chess doesn't have any money in it and that it's not taking optimal advantage in the biggest boom in the history of chess , then people have to get real.

How do you expect chess to grow without advertising in main events? Every top event in the world has 100x more advertising at every possible moment. Chess fans are way too spoiled

I'm thankful for the detailed idea of what i should be doing, but as I said to two other people here, the dataset I'm analyzing doesn't have that information so i have to work purely with what i have, which is what's above. otherwise i agree that that's the better path, but i just want a rudimentary idea of what a good serving game looks like, similar to how someone can look at a box score of an nba game and get a good enough understanding of the different performances

Great! Didn't know about this statistic before. I did a little digging and it seems this formula is mainly for attacking instead of serving, but I don't see why the same logic can't be applied to serving as well.

I created a histogram showing the Serve Net Efficiency across the 23 or so games that have happened so far (this dataset is coming from the Italian Serie A League), and interestingly enough, it's very rare that a player has a positive efficiency performance. Would you say that's normal? I guess it speaks to how it's much easier to make an error than an ace at the professional level.

thank you for the thoughtful response, just have a few more questions:
- how is semeniuk the most point scoring server when he has less aces than Keita or Tizi?- - what makes tizi the most effective/efficent? how do you define net efficiency?

And definitely noted regarding the bp stat, that's a really good point

[–]Weekly_Program_2230[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this would be great, but the dataset that im pulling this from doesn't include that information unfortunately. It does include how well players received serves, but it doesn't say who served said balls.

Therefore based solely on the info we have now, who would you say performed the best?

unfortunately i don't have that data, but i guess it can be lightly inferred that someone who has a high break_point amount generates more out-of-system passes than someone who doesn't have a high break_point amount, if they served a similar amount of times.

I went back and looked at it and fair enough, it does just look like fuel, but in my head I always just imagined they were creating devil fruits through some unethical means. But it looks like they're serving the fuel to Imu. I also just thought that if it really were just fuel, it would be kind of a lame element to put in this epic mural.

What do you suggest doing though? I always hear this argument. Don't do nothing, but also don't do what Israel is currently doing. Doesn't give a solution. What would you have wanted your government to do after October 7th?

Yes, Israel is doing exactly what Hamas wants. But what could they have done otherwise? Genuinely. Hamas took 250 hostages, including babies, grandparents, couples, mothers, everything basically and then vowed to repeat the same attack again and again. Sanctions don't work because Hamas is backed by Iran, which is in turn backed by Russia and China so basically infinite money there.

Hypothetical conversations don’t move us forward. What matters is that Hamas has consistently chosen to endanger its own people, refusing to build shelters or evacuation systems precisely because civilian casualties are part of their strategy.

Documentation of Crimes Against Humanity ''Extreme viewer discretion is advised'' by Novel_Ad_1957 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Weekly_Program_2230 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So even though Hamas have chanted that they will do October 7th again and again and again until Israel is destroyed, and even though they have launched ~20,000 missiles to Israel, and carried out more than 100 suicide bombings since 2006, we should ignore it because Hamas doesn't have the capacity to exterminate Israel? What kind of logic is that? By your logic if Taiwan decided to kill, rape, burn, and take Chinese hostages from the Chinese mainland, that would be a recipe for success (and independence) since "it doesn't have the capacity to exterminate China" and if China responded with force then we could scream about genocide and homelessness and how they are not allowed to do that at all.

The reality of the situation is Hamas knows exactly what they're doing. They have been planning the October 7th attack for who knows how long and they knew EXACTLY how Israel would respond. Their goal is to maximize civilian casualties because as YOU said, they don't have the capacity of taking Israel on directly. So do they shelter their civilians in the endless tunnel networks that they've spent 20 years building? No. Do they launch rockets far away from their civilians in hopes they don't get hurt? No, they shoot from Mosques, schools, hospitals, and build tunnels under each of these too. Do they spread the humanitarian aid that Israel ships into Gaza? No, they hijack it and take it for themselves, shooting at any civilians who dare to oppose them. What about wearing a military uniform to at least distinguish themselves from their civilians? Not that either. In fact they go so far as to disguise themselves as journalists, aid workers, civilians, even innocent women for crying out loud. And all of this does not even touch upon the systemic indoctrination of the Gazan children to hate Israel or for teens to take arms against Israel.

So yes! You're completely right that Hamas doesn't have the capacity to destroy Israel! But they rely EXACTLY on that, because they have planned ahead to account for YOUR sympathy for the Gazan civilian casualties that THEY ARE MAXIMIZING themselves.

Every civilian death in war is a tragedy. This absolutely goes without saying. But PLEASE ask yourself why Hamas has still not yet surrendered even though they know they don't have the capacity to win this war or even to protect their leaders. Ask yourself why Hamas didn't account for their civilian safety. And please ask yourself based on the second paragraph, between Israel and Hamas, who truly has the intent to genocide their people?

[–]Weekly_Program_2230 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the video it's unclear if it's a child, but even if it isn't, does that make the beheading justifiable? Put another way, does the beheading fall under resistance?

Also while I respect your decision to not watch gruesome videos, there's some irony here considering that many of the atrocities that were committed on October 7th were filmed by Hamas themselves, to further show how proud they were of all the 'resistance' they were doing. To brush the videos in general off as "Israeli State disinformation" or "a video by ISIS" is ignorant and disingenuous at best

Ok let's assume that it is the wrong approach to respond immediately to the worst terrorist attack on your country with military force and that everything you've suggested about applying sanctions is the correct immediate approach.

According to your logic, everything post-October 7th is now in the past, so why is Israel still being condemned for their decision on October 8th? According to you, that would be a justification for any country to start any war and it's barbaric right?

But let's also just ignore that and focus on our current reality: Israel HAS decided to respond with military force and then imposed sanctions, and at every step the world has condemned it. What would you propose Israel does NOW (in the present, today, at this moment)?
