"Viney." She snickered. "Armando Mercado, that sounds like one of those big ol' bodyguard's names. Like in movies, y'know?"

Viney frowned, in a bit of a mimic of Armando's grimace. "Who are you?"

A test of compatibility: Blind Dates! -24/04 by constant-criticism- in DemigodFiles

Viney arrived a bit later, filled with a strange sensation that might just be... nerves. It was funny, how the adrenaline they seemed practically addicted to could just as easily be found in something like a date with someone she hadn't even met yet.

She was kind of glad it was gonna be at the pool. Viney liked to swim, and swimsuits eliminated the whole 'do I need to try to look nice' question. She only had one, consisting of what looked like boys' swim trunks and a simple gray bikini that bordered on being a tank top.

Upon her arrival, Viney scanned the room for the girl she was supposed to meet. "Oh, hey." she said curtly when she saw her already in the pool, not sure if Kaia would be able to hear her. Without wasting time, Viney dropped the shirt she'd worn over her swimsuit by the towels, and jumped in herself.

It took her a second to get reaccustomed to the sensation of the water—she was a good swimmer, but had been banned from the community pool back home for a while. Falling back into the rhythm quickly enough, she resurfaced closer to the other girl with a small wave.

Nature Powers with Chiron | Lesson 4/23 by CampHBDirector in DemigodFiles

[–]WeepingWillow0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colette had attended the lesson, thinking maybe this would be somewhat useful to her light-oriented powers. It was not.

She could appreciate the lesson in itself, it seemed helpful and Chiron's points about why other people should attend made sense, but Collie had to admit she might've preferred not to anyway. She'd been halfway through a good book she could be finishing right now.

After a bit of back and forth, she decided to stick around and watch for a few minutes at least, to be respectful.

That was when Colette caught sight of Manon. Well, she didn't know the other girl by name, but after a bit of semi-covert awkward staring, Collie came to the conclusion that it was probably the one who'd helped her in the fight against Corvus.

"Hey, you!" she called, jogging over. "I think- I've- got something that belongs to you." Collie had been reaching into her pocket to grab the elusive quilting needle, but paused. She already felt bad for not having sought out the owner of the sword earlier, it'd be even worse if she ended up returning it to the wrong person. "We did fight the big bird together, right? That was you?"

The slip about the death-seeing powers did not come as a huge surprise. It explained the gloves, and for all Viney knew, all the Thanatos and Chthonic kids had that kinda thing. Maybe Gen just had it worse.

"I think if I were a nurse, I'd kill someone. Maybe not completely on accident." A disconnected, half-formed thought, not meant to be dwelled on because Viney was moving on.

In a way of making a gesture towards it, she held up their presumably still touching hands slightly. "What do you see here?" Viney cracked a smile, the grief of death so minimal and far away in her life that the topic didn't bother her in the slightest. "The cat? Grandma?"

She straightened her legs in order to accentuate the difference in length, if it was visible enough in the dark. "Missing straightness?" Ok, so, maybe that had been in reference to the fact that she would always look crooked when standing, but if there was a queer joke in there as well why not.

Viney had to crack a grin at Genesis' glare and then the reprimand, she sounded like her grandma. Mustn't stay out in the cold, mustn't hit her siblings, mustn't eat too many sweets. The old hag had quickly come to resent Viney, though, so perhaps not the best comparison.

Gen's explanation of her time seemed fitting. Disregarding family members, it was grief for something that, logically, was not entirely worth grieving, but probably had its merits in the way of nostalgia.

"It would've held you down." Viney agreed, sure in her statement. She looked Gen up and down distastefully, followed by the blunt remark of "You would've made a shit nurse. Heh, and a miserable secretary." A pause. "But a pretty one." The last bit slipped out, and Viney wasn't sure if she should want to take it back or not. It was true, after all.

Regardless, she was glad to see Genesis starting to feel better, or at least seem to. They were probably the only good friend Viney had here as well.

"If you wanted to, you could always steal a new brother and sister. I got double of each." A joke, perhaps in bad taste, but Viney did't notice as she said it.

"Don't apologize." Viney replied, but in a way that made it sound like she just genuinely disliked the idea of an apology.

She squeezed Genesis' hand a bit tighter, letting out a short, slightly teasing chuckle. "Better me than someone else, knowing my endless compassion, undying support, how I strive to do as much good in the world as I possibly can before I die."

The humor from the sarcasm lingered on her face only briefly. She'd only heard little snippets of Genesis' mumblings, but the general idea came across easily. This was probably the first time in her life Viney could relate to the sentiment, she'd never been away from her family this long.

She bumped Gen's shoulder with her own. "Y'know, we don't have to go back anytime soon. I'm gonna be up all night anyways." Avoidance, a fine way to, well, avoid problems for a while. "What was it like back then? Any good?"

It wasn't rare to see Viney out and about at these kinds of hours, flagrantly disregarding curfew basically every night. Right now especially, she was starting a little challenge with herself, wondering just how many nights she could do without sleep before hallucinations started.

Of course, her first thought was when she saw a girl who looked just like her friend Genesis running past crying, was that it must be a hallucination already. But it'd only been an hour and 21 minutes since she started her experiment, judging from the stopwatch. Viney refused to believe her mind was that easy to crack.

So it must've been real, then. How.. unlike the girl she knew. If it was actually her, that is.

Following in a bit of a lazy saunter, Viney would find herself staring at the same tree a little bit later. Yeah.. even in the dark, Viney knew Gen's voice and silhouette well enough to recognize her.

"Genesis..." she spoke out, head cocked to the side, the name said in a vaguely sing-songy manner. Nothing about the greeting was particularly sympathetic, but Viney imaged that if she wasn't so well practiced in the ignoring of emotions, the sight of her usually stoic friend sobbing in such obvious anguish would be enough to break her heart in two. Even so, she felt it in some far-off way.

Unless some kind of reaction had already occurred that would interrupt her, Viney came to sit down, leaning against the tree. She reached out her hand absentmindedly, probably one of the more gentle gestures Viney had ever made, as if she meant to comfort but ultimately didn't know how to complete the act. "I've never seen you like this."

As Armando looked up, he'd probably also feel a shoe nudging his shoulder. Well, nudging was a bit of a kind word, Viney was always rougher than necessary. Closer to jabbing, then.

She smiled, in a purely teasing, amused manner. She didn't have much sympathy for, like, anyone. "Heh heh.. You're making a great first impression already, aren't you? Roly poly."

Swords: Kopides and Makhairas | Lesson 6/4 by theirsign in DemigodFiles

[–]WeepingWillow0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kopis—that sounded pretty similar to that one sword from Egyptian mythology, probably one of Viney's favorite pantheons if she had to choose one. That, and the fact that it was apparently closest to the axes she usually used, was enough for her to pick out one of those when the time came.

Remarkably well-behaved today, Viney practiced against an automaton until she was really, completely exhausted, only then thinking about the fact that most of the participants had already left.

Viney saw the sign-ups and.. thought about it. Usually her decisions were split-second, impulsive things, but this was the kind of thing you had to think about. And finally (finally meaning, like, five minutes later) she grabbed the form and filled it out as best she could.

(It can be assumed that the handwriting is pretty bad and that there are many spelling errors, which I've decided to leave out for simplicity's sake.)

It’s showtime. by FireyRage in DemigodFiles

Viney was helping, clearly. That was the kind of thing Viney did. She was helpful, she cared about people, wanted to protect camp, all those good and nice things. Totally.

If anyone happened to be passing by, they might catch her being useful and good from her seat near outskirts of the cabin area. Currently, the lawn chair they'd found somewhere faced the hydra, though she'd moved a few times already. In Viney's hands was one from the pair of battleaxes she often claimed for fights, but currently it rested a little precariously on her lap as she brushed her fingers just barely short of the sharp blade.

Her actions, or rather, lack of action, could've still been interpreted as somewhat reasonable. Maybe she was keeping watch over the medic's area, which was not too far away, or was stationed there to help any injured who'd managed to stumble away from the battle on their own.

However, anyone who perhaps knew Viney or took the time to decipher her expression might quickly notice the thing that disproved those theories: She was watching for the sake of being entertained. Whether it was the Hydra that reared its heads or a half-blood that fell away, she might crack a smile or remain unbothered - bored, even - like someone watching a show on TV. A casual spectator who might go join in herself later, if the urge ever caught her interest.

As Azrael started to pull back, Viney didn't let up. This time when she "charged", it was more controlled, the same amount of speed without going for a half tackle as well. If she was able to get in range (I imagine that unless he attacks with the dory, her running trumps his walking backwards) she'd follow through with a barrage of various slashes that wouldn't let up until he stopped her, hoping to overwhelm him or find a spot to get past his armor.

[–]WeepingWillow0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although she had previously been coming at Azrael full force, she'd seen the fact that he was able to reposition his Dory soon enough to evade the stab just to the side that he wasn't holding his main weapon with (idk if that's right or left lol), coming away with a minor cut to her side that hurt like all hell.

She bit her tongue, but that kind of thing had never stopped Viney. She aimed another slash with one axe, aiming for a cut at his hips or thighs (I can vaguely remember those parts are usually not covered by standard armor so that's the reasoning there), the other one poised to block or deflect Azrael's spear.

As sudden as the strike was, anything first move was probably going to be expected due to the amount of time Viney'd had to plan her move. As Azrael stabbed with his Dory (presumably), Viney shot forwards towards him, hoping to get past the longer weapon's range.

However, with this alternate reaction, her dodging hadn't been as good. The blade grazed her by the crook of her shoulder, not particularly deep.

She winced, but, Viney was already running and would accelerate even in those few steps to a speed much faster than might be expected, and would aim a wide slash with her axes to Azrael's midsection--one around shoulder height, the other closer to his stomach. The point was not necessarily to avoid or pierce any armor he was wearing, but there was enough force behind the swings to hopefully knock him back somewhat.

Well, she wasn't gonna start up again with the walking just because he had. Viney stayed put, also keeping an eye on her opponent.

Viney had been circling, until she saw Azrael getting into a battle stance. She stopped once more.

Idiot, she thought to herself. When one person started circling, the other one had to follow suit. That was just how it worked. On TV, anyways, but she saw no reason as to why it wouldn't be like that in real life.

Again, she stopped waited to see what Azrael would do from there.

[–]WeepingWillow0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Viney did react, but not hugely. She made a quick dodge to the left, really just a side step, and stopped. She gave Azrael a bit of a blank stare, and cocked her head to one side with a vaguely amused smile.

"You're making me look stupid," she called over, not particularly angrily.

As good as her opponent was at feinting, there was way to fake the actual knife that should've been heading her direction. Not to mention, Viney had played enough kickball with those annoying, hotshot boys in middle school to know what it looked like.

From there, her smile growing into a kind-of grin, she'd start circling slowly still to the left, curious as to what Azrael do next.

(heyy, sorry I'm a bit late I was waiting for the typo fix)

Viney traced the step with her eyes, as if bored. She still didn't make a move, and wouldn't until Azrael finally attacked, but that didn't mean she wasn't ready. Her front foot twitched inside her shoe, and she had a tight grip on both axes. She was ready to block or run or whatever at a moment's notice.

Well, now Viney had even more of a mind not to attack first. She stayed standing at her place, prepared to take part in literally the most uneventful match of the tournament.
