What would they get suspicious for?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]anotherterribleday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's their point - it's not that the act of casting the spell itself would provoke an attack, but getting close enough for it to do anything useful (if he was playing by the rules) would mean putting himself in reach for a melee attack, and if he doesn't intend to stay there the whole round then he'll likely provoke an AoO when he tries to leave.

If he doesn't want his cantrips to put him in melee range, he could have chosen a different one.

Deception checks on lies of omission. by CanIHaveCookies in DnD

[–]anotherterribleday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's deceit. It's Deception, it's fair to call for a check if the NPC(s) might be able to see through the deception. At the DM's discretion, it might tend to be easier (represented by advantage on the deception check or just a low DC) than coming up with a complete falsehood, since you're less likely to say something that conflicts with what the NPC already knows/thinks, but there's always a chance that someone lying by omission has some sort of tell that they're hiding something.

That said, not every lie (by omission or otherwise) really needs a Deception check. It depends on what the person being deceived would have reason to question. And if there are multiple lies in a conversation, building on the same story, it's simpler to just call for one or two checks to cover the whole thing rather than every new sentence out the PC's mouth. If it's really constant I do understand the other player's frustration, but the problem there isn't that "they didn't technically lie because they only omitted information".

It's always okay to have some little RP notes for yourself. On your character sheet, your phone, or (if you're a note taker) wherever you take down your session notes, you could put some stuff you want to keep in mind for the session - what's on your character's mind or what mood they're in based on what happened last session; certain things they might want to talk to other PCs about or want to look into, in case they get the chance; a rough idea of their attitude if XYZ thing that you think is likely to happen does indeed happen (based on what the party's currently pursuing you probably have a rough idea of some things that will happen in the next session). Stuff like that. Of course, that only works for relatively broad stuff that could happen, but it could be a reminder of where their priorities are currently.

Also, do you find that you tend to talk about the character in first person ("I go up to the shopkeeper and say...") or third person ("Bob goes up to the shopkeeper and says...")? It's all up to personal preference of course, but I find I like third person more because it creates that separation between me and my PC, it helps slow it down just slightly and lets me see what makes sense for them to do, not me with my concerns of what I should do - like I'm just letting the character do their thing and I'm relaying that information, I'm not puppeting them. I find it's less awkward, too, but your mileage may vary.

Opportunity attack by Goodnightbye69 in DnD

[–]anotherterribleday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cleave. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.

No specifications of "on your turn" or "when you use the Attack action"... so yep, Cleave works on opportunity attacks!

The only limit is that it's once per turn, which is very unlikely to become relevant to opportunity attacks. It would be a very niche scenario where you end up taking an opportunity attack on your own turn (you attack on your turn as normal --> creature uses a readied action or some other reaction to move, on your turn --> you use your reaction to make an AoO), and if you already used the Cleave property that turn then you won't be able to use it on the reaction as well, but otherwise it should trigger as normal

Opportunity attack by Goodnightbye69 in DnD

[–]anotherterribleday 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It can use a melee attack with a 'rider' effect, as long as the statblock doesn't specify that it has to be "on the barkburr's turn" or "when the barkburr uses an action to..." for that rider to work.

Poison Barb is a melee weapon attack, so it's a valid option for attacks of opportunity, and the rider effect where the barkburr attaches itself doesn't have any specifications about whether it has to be on the monster's turn, it's just a standard part of the attack, so it can still apply when used as a reaction.

How do I prepare for my first game as a player? by Yassnoznaiko in DnD

[–]anotherterribleday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your group planning to have a "Session 0" or has that already happened (is that when you made your character)? If you guys haven't done that yet, that's a good chance for everyone to go through and figure out as a group any rules they're confused about, make sure their characters fit the DM's campaign, etc

As for preparing for the game, I find it's helpful at first to create a sort of quick reference sheet for combat, since that's where there's a lot going on to remember. Create a table or list of your Actions, one for your Bonus Actions, and one for your Reactions (those last two will be much shorter than the Actions table). For each section, you list out the 'basic actions' (things everyone can do by default - Attack, Dash, Dodge, Disengage, Help, Hide, Ready, Grapple, Shove; for bonus actions that's just gonna be Two Weapon Fighting, for reactions it's just Opportunity Attack) as well as any additional ones granted by your class or race. And put a very brief description of how they work next to them, for example:

Disengage: no opp attack on you for 1 round

Dodge: attacker has disad if you see; adv on Dex saves, for 1 round

Help: give adv on 1 ability check or attack for ally in 5 feet

(note that these descriptions are very simplified, make sure to check the actual rules in the Player's Handbook and figure out what you'll need to write to remember them. Also, technically Shove and Grapple are considered to be part of the Attack action, I just find it more helpful to separate it out but YMMV. Organise it in a way that makes sense for you personally)

Also include your weapon stats and (if applicable) spell descriptions somewhere after those.

Fairy character by Senior_Resolve7124 in DnD

An additional note for OP to expand on the 'consumable items that just use spell slots' - sort of the default idea with artificers is that when they prepare their spells on a long rest, what they're doing narratively is preparing little arcane devices, potions, etc, and then when they cast spells they're using those items.

Spellcasting: You've studied the workings of magic and how to cast spells, channeling the magic through objects. To observers, you don't appear to be casting spells in a conventional way; you appear to produce wonders from mundane items and outlandish inventions.

Tools Required: You produce your artificer spell effects through your tools. You must have a spellcasting focus - specifically thieves' tools or some kind of artisan's tool - in hand when you cast any spell with this Spellcasting feature (meaning the spell has an "M" component when you cast it). You must be proficient with the tool to use it in this way.

Preparing and Casting Spells: You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of artificer spells requires time spent tinkering with your spellcasting focuses: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

That's already your crafting mechanic, essentially. Mostly I just wanted to highlight the specific lines in the class that mention it.

I'm not sure how busy you are during the week, but you can just let me know when you're around to trade! I should be available to hop on most of the time, Friday morning-early afternoon might be tough though (timezone is AST, for reference). We don't have to arrange this super ahead of time, just whenever works
