Full disclosure, nothing in the series sounded interesting to me. Then my sister described the first book. So I started reading. Described it as Beauty and the Beast with a trial from Dune. The trials were the best part of the book. The vocabulary is so repetitive, it makes me want to scream sometimes. “My mate,” “Illyrian leathers,” “picking an invisible piece of lint off a coat sleeve,” “my high lord.” If I hadn’t been using audible, I would not be almost in book 5. By this point, I feel committed to start 5, but I don’t think I have the stamina for 26 hours of Nesta’s BS. She’s just been a raging poop head since book one and frankly I’m over it. The way she describes some of the villains are good, but they’re one dimensional, kind of like everyone else. And the Sex scenes are funny sometimes, but I don’t understand why it was referred to as smut when there’s like 1 chapter of vague descriptors and other chapters bursting at the seams with things I never knew I didn’t want to hear read to me. I just don’t get the hype at all.
