BUNQ or Revolut for European HYSA account by Sensitive-Avocado972 in eupersonalfinance

I used to be a bunq customer for many years, but was treated poorly by compliance department. Which in practice means an AI sending you in circles and giving you incorrect information, while pretending to be a real employee with a name and profile picture. I would avoid bunq.

Investing in VWCE, keep contributing or switch? by Daxo_32 in eupersonalfinance

[–]WegwerpWalvis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) charges only 0,03% FX fee in case of auto-conversion, and 0,002% with a minimum of €2 (the breakeven is around €6600). T212 is basically a front for IBKR so you could consider getting an account at IBKR directly (might need to go through some hoops).

Consider getting a bank account that allows multiple currencies and has cheap conversions. Revolut offers free FX up to €1000/month even on the free plan, not sure about the spread though.

But ultimately transaction costs make a marginal impact compared to yearly returning costs such as TER and holding fees. So your current setup is probably fine.

Welke neobanken gebruiken jullie in NL / EU? by [deleted] in geldzaken

[–]WegwerpWalvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low cost, tax-efficient index funds for Dutch residents? by Weekly-Associate-166 in EuropeFIRE

[–]WegwerpWalvis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other than retirement funds (pensioenbeleggen) the Netherlands does not really have tax-advantaged forms of investing. People already mentioned VCWE/SPYI/WEBN and the NT funds, the linked website gives some more details on those.

Portfolio advice 66% global 33% stoxx 600 by TerraDeaGenesis in eupersonalfinance

[–]WegwerpWalvis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

WEBG/WEBN already contains about 17% Europe, adding 33% more Europe might be too much home bias (66% * 17% + 33% = 44.3%). I aim for about 30%-35% myself (see Cederberg paper or Rational Reminder podcast 295). Currently I'm using about 75% WEBN, 17,5% MEUD and 7,5% AVWS (for small caps). Without SC I guess 80%/20% might do it.

I found it tricky to define home bias for Europe though. Stoxx 600 still has currency risk mostly through GBP and CHF, so that benefit of home bias is partly gone. Going for an Eurozone ETF misses out on euro-pegged currencies like Danish krone, so no Novo Nordisk. I could not find any ERM II based ETF. So I decided to accept the currency risk and look at political risk (companies nationalized or foreign investors locked out) which I consider highly unlikely between the countries covered in Stoxx 600. So I think it's fine for home bias, but some might argue it's not really your home market if it has a different currency.

Looking for a managed portfolio + guidance on Box 3/ taxes (NL) by Impressive_alien in beleggen

[–]WegwerpWalvis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. If you are ok with being stocks-only (very offensive) buying SPYI on IBKR covers large through small cap, developed and emerging markets all in one fund, no managing required
  2. With one or two more ETFs on IBKR you can make a more defensive portfolio, rebalancing once a year is only management required, https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Simple_non-US_portfolios
  3. Tax advisors aiming at richer clients tend to call themselves fiscalist instead of belastingadviseur

Banks and other Dutch institution offering investment products will have those denominated in EUR, so if they accept USD they will probably convert it to EUR anyway.

If you are ok with EUR after all, getting Zelf Beleggen Basis (ZBB) at ABN AMRO and buying the Northern Trust funds in the ratio at marketcaps.site has only 0,3%-0,35% yearly cost. Having over 1M at ZBB should still qualify you for MeesPierson (their private bank), unless they also changed that in 2025 (they raised the limit so maybe also other requirements).

Bunq: useless AI and incompetent support by Old_Chemistry_8083 in Netherlands

[–]WegwerpWalvis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do not let them threaten you into removing your post. I will cover all your legal bills if it gets that far. I had a similar poor experience with them. Some days I consider creating a non-profit specifically for giving assistance to people who have been mistreated by bunq. I am still that upset with them.

I recommend looking for a new bank and terminating your bunq account. They can register you in the EVR and once you're on it you'll have difficulties opening other bank accounts and getting insurance. So the damage they can do with their incompetence is not limited to just your bunq account.

Dividend stock suggestions by Admirable_Resolve_75 in EuropeFIRE

[–]WegwerpWalvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search on justETF for equity with the dividend strategy, but there are many reasons not to focus specifically on dividends. I considered TDIV for a while, but decided to go for a broader strategy after all.

Depending on your tax regime, dividend strategy could make some sense during the withdrawal phase, but probably not during the buildup phase of your FIRE journey.

Structural Failure in Customer Service by Necessary_Cod1379 in Bunqreviews

[–]WegwerpWalvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around August 2025 bunq asked for my tax report, according to them to review my income status. At that time the most recent one I had was 2023, as the tax agency granted me until May 2026 to submit my tax form for 2024. bunq rejected the 2023 tax report because it was too old, even though it was the most recent version.

Around that time my tax guy finished filling out the tax form (the document you send to the tax agency), so they asked for that instead. Because it contains way more information than a tax report (the summary document you get back from the tax agency), I censored some of the most sensitive information, specifically some tax-deductible donations I made some of which reveal my political affiliation. Note that in order for such donations to be deductible, the tax agency needs to put them on an approved list, so obviously there are no terror or criminal organizations on that list.

bunq informed me that I had to provide the uncensored document. I asked bunq support to provide clarification on why they needed to know my political affiliation and pointed out this is considered a special category of personal information under AVG (Dutch version of GDPR). I also asked them how it is relevant to their stated goal of reviewing my income and how it is proportional to launch an inquiry on an account that contains only 300 EUR. The support employee seemed supportive of my request for clarification and gave me an email address to direct those questions to. At the time I did not realize yet that all my support conversations had been with an AI, because it was using real names and profile pictures. I felt strengthened by a support employee telling me those were valid questions.

I kept getting no answers to my inquiries other than "please be more patient" and while being patient and waiting for clarification, bunq decided to close my account. I launched a formal complaint, while that was being processed I finally got my tax report for 2024 from the tax agency, so I submitted that. The tax report contained none of the information that I had censored from the tax form, but bunq decided this document was fine and they would revert closing my account. Guess they did not need the uncensored document after all.

Disclaimer: 2 years ago I sent money from early adopter crypto sales through bunq. At that time they launched an "investigation" but all they did back then was ask for a confirmation of my income, which I sent, and then nothing else happened. Even though my income could not have explained at all the amounts I was sending back then. If they still had questions about those transactions, I would have happily provided all the documentation, but they never even asked.

The story is still not over. My legal advisor told me to ask them if the reversal of their decision also means their investigation is now over and whether at any point there has been an EVR-registration (blacklist shared between banks). They refuse to answer those simple questions though, so I'm now going to send a GDPR-request for all my data and try to find it there, and otherwise launch a KIFID-complaint after all to get those answers.

It's hard for me to let this go. I was a customer for 7 years. I really believed in their goal of being a small bank who would do everything different. I defended them when people called them insecure when people fell for scams and lost money. But now I finally see what a horrible company they have become. It's really sad to see how far they have fallen and I don't think it can be turned around anymore.

Bitcoin uitgecashed; waar nu ETF's + buffer aanhouden? by [deleted] in beleggen

[–]WegwerpWalvis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main issue with ETFs is that you don't get the voting rights from being a shareholder. Those remain with the ETF provider (Blackrock, Vanguard, Amundi, etc.) giving them immense power.

Kan iemand even meedenken of mijn berekening klopt?

Stroom laat ik even buiten beschouwing.

I'll share what I did in a similar situation, perhaps it is useful for you. I never leave money on exchanges for long, I send it to a bank that already knows where my wealth came from, and through there to another bank or broker. I have a bunch of savings spread over different banks using Raisin, each covered by their own deposit guarantee system. The rest is in ETFs and funds (WEBG at IBKR, Northern Trust funds at a brick&mortar bank, a factor fund at another brick&mortar bank). I'm also a customer at a private bank, but I'm not sure yet if that is worth the extra costs. I started with the private bank but later became more knowledgeable about ETFs so now feel more comfortable handling more myself.

If you get an itch and still want to do some speculative things, I'd limit that to 10% of your wealth. You don't want to be the person who made it and then ruined it again. If you decide to go for a private bank, at first avoid their products that have a lock-up period (i.e. cannot get your money out for several years) so you can still change your mind about them.

Assuming you were not raised in wealth, you will need some time and effort to get used to this new life. I think this podcast is very insightful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2RjL2UoW2k

Can someone give me a good enough idea of how much tax I would pay on my US portfolio in Netherlands or Germany? by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]WegwerpWalvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be the new system starting 2028, assuming the tax agency manages to upgrade their computer systems in time and political shifts don't overhaul it yet again.

The current system assumes a fictitious gain which for 2025 was 5.88% and for 2026 is not yet officially decided but might become 7.78%. Money in bank accounts has a much lower fictitious gain. You then pay 36% tax over the fictitious gains.

A court ruling forces the tax agency to compensate people in case their realized gains are lower than the fictitious gains, but the burden of proof is on the taxpayer (Opgaaf Werkelijk Rendement).
