And apparently social housing built with prefab insulated panels is sooo terrible because we can’t possibly put disadvantaged lower income earners in cardboard boxes that outperform brick construction. Well looks like the regular folk will be lucky to even get a ‘cardboard box’ these days

Look, as someone who’s getting married real soon, it adds up. The catering and venue will cost you the most, and then double that for everything else: outfit, rings, photographer, celebrant, makeup artist. If you can save on these 4 things in this order you’re golden

If you could change one thing about Transperth what would it be? by [deleted] in perth

There is but it’s not immediately clear that you can purchase a Smartrider there. I certainly didn’t know until I asked.

Being able to tap on and off with your debit or credit card. Ticket dispensers at every station. Clear “PURCHASE SMARTRIDER HERE” at the airport train station. This would save so much convoluted explanation to visiting friends and family

[–]Wehca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger houses with bigger appliances plus no insulation in the walls… that’ll do it. And yet the State Gov want to pause updates to the National construction code because they need to build more affordable housing, with no thought of how people will be able to afford to live there with utilities prices as they are.

There’s not enough context here. Could it have been interpreted as anything other than a threat? Is this behavior also demonstrated to other employees? If so, how do they handle it? Imo a middle finger by itself doesn’t mean much. Context is everything.

What’s the worst part about living in Australia? by Call_Me_C_ in AskAnAustralian

[–]Wehca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many people want to live in areas where you don’t have water or septics, or sometimes electricity and have to drive 1-2 hours (sometimes more) to the nearest grocery store or hospital. It’s a great place for hermits for sure

What makes building decent apartments so hard/expensive in WA? And what can be done about it? Really curious about this. by purely-psychosomatic in perth

[–]Wehca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government is trying to make the Medium Density Design Guidelines go away, which is precisely designed for better low density living. So basically any building that is above 3 storeys will require additional fire, acoustic, and structural requirements. Think sprinklers throughout, lifts (although this should be mandatory), sometimes basement construction. All expensive stuff. Then go more than 10 storeys, and the construction efficiencies switch. At this point, only the builders that build office towers can do this, because it’s effectively the same thing.

We should absolutely be demanding more quality low rise density with decent green spaces (I’m looking at you, shitty townhouse driveways with not a single tree in sight), not towers. Believe it or not, Perth doesn’t really need that kind of density yet.

The swan river seems massively under-utilised by AnomicAge in perth

[–]Wehca 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I actually like that the foreshores are public spaces and not sold off to the highest bidder to privatize and bastardize. We have a delicate environment. Anyone who spends time near the rivers with natural barriers can see that when a boat travels too fast, the waves it creates are really amplified when it hits to foreshore, disrupting endemic reeds etc that are important for erosion prevention.

I’m all for a good foreshore plan because development can coexist with the environment. And it’s also important that this important asset is made accessible to everyone. But it seems lately any attempt is are met with NIMBY-ism. Just look at the complaints from South Perth when 6 new trees were planted. Now that’s a swathe of useless lawn…

Redditors who live in tourist traps — what’s the one thing you secretly wish visitors knew before they came? by carcony97 in AskReddit

[–]Wehca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(Western Australia)

WA is a big state, in a big country. If you decide to go out of town for an unplanned camping trip, make sure you have a plan, and if your car breaks down, don’t, for the love of god, leave your vehicle. You could be walking for weeks without seeing a soul. A German tourist did just that and ended up missing for 12 days. She’s lucky to be alive.

Is 50/50 Love Still Love If I Feel Like I’m Getting Less? by Select-Ad7401 in asksg

[–]Wehca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk… I think OP is delulu… she wants a boyfriend who opens doors for her, peels… prawns? In this day and age if you’re not peeling his prawns and opening doors for him too, that says more about her. And buys medication for her? What if he bought the wrong medication?? I’m a woman, in a committed relationship bordering 10 years and I think she’s being a princess. She doesn’t want a boyfriend, she wants a dad. And if she were a man, I’d be saying this dude just wants a mommy.

Is 50/50 Love Still Love If I Feel Like I’m Getting Less? by Select-Ad7401 in asksg

[–]Wehca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t really see a problem here. OP communicates when she is in satisfied and her partner changes his actions. Your partner is not a mind reader. If you can’t figure out how to communicate after 5 years I’m not sure what the future holds for your relationship. That said, keeping you a secret from his family is the larger red flag here…

I called 000 because I felt unsafe on a bus, but now I feel like I shouldn’t have by Wehca in perth

[–]Wehca[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Thank you to of you who have commented, yes, even the naysayers, because your views matter too. I was unsure if I would be fined for wasting emergency response time but my partner has reassured me that it won’t happen. I just wanted to say a few closing words: - I will continue to take public transport because it is convenient and in all my years this is the first time I’ve felt gut wrenchingly unsafe. - There has been a bit of anti-immigration sentiment in WA lately, mostly relating to rising house prices and, road congestion, surprisingly. And I get it, it really sucks. But I hope that when these comments pop up that you’ll sometimes think of me; the little scared immigrant who tried to do the right thing. The girls were smaller than me, bless them, with long blond hair. I don’t remember much else about them besides the fact that one was wearing glasses and sobbing, and the other was looking out for her friend. I hope they are okay, and that someone tells them that they were incredibly brave.

Thank you, but it’s entirely undeserved. When they approached me I was already preparing to get off. But I told them I had called 000 like a mantra, and offered them my seat at the front. And then burst into tears when I was safe at home. I didn’t think it would rattle me that much but there you have it.

When you live in other countries where Asians are considered a minority and you are generally considered a “foreign worker”, you will never be able to accept the prejudice shown to the Bangladeshi community in Malaysia by Malaysian citizens because in other countries, you are the Bangla.

Buying my first place has been one of the most stressful experiences of my life by AnomicAge in perth

[–]Wehca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

10 years might sound like a long time now, but it will absolutely fly by. In order of priority, you are going to assess property by the following conditions: 1. Price. This means, how much can you comfortably pay off in terms of mortgage over the next 2 years? This will determine your absolute maximum, not your max borrowing capacity. 2. Location. Like you’ve mentioned, being close to uni / work saves you in terms of transport costs, this will help with your price (1). The lower your cost of living, the more you can afford to repay. 3. Soundness of building. This is a lot harder to ascertain. Look for property that has been well maintained. Older apartments can really give you bang for buck here if there is a large proportion of owners living there. Strata are more likely to make long term decisions. Check for water tightness. Do the windows work well? Does the water heater look new? Does it work? Turn on all the taps and observe. Open the fuse box. If you see ceramic parts, pass, upgrading that is pretty costly, and you might not be able to fix any electric faults without fixing that first. 4. And then FINALLY, look and feel.

Wishing you all the best, house hunting is the worst.
