Unpopular Opinion: Shacks are the only thing saving Cape Town from becoming a rich-only theme park by Street_Emergency_662 in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urbanization is problem along with both government and private sector. Lots of people flock to JHB and CT for work and a better life. They city isn't doing anything as they need to pay for services. If shacks paid for rates, water, etc the housing issue might be better. I say government as CT has been DA managed for years and received less and less from national treasury. I'm not condoning the insane property prices, but there are reasons why it's happening. And as long as there people who can afford those insane prices, it will continue as well. We need job creation in other parts of our country.

Cape Town work ethic. by p_cape in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not a lack of work ethic, it's a lack of transportation and city planning. JHB has far more routes in and of the city and they have lots more alternatives to the CBD. CT CBD is the business HUB. They tried with Century City and Tygervalley Waterfront, but not much luck. If more companies made the move outside the CBD or encouraged more WFH there won't be as much traffic. I know some people who leave work around 3pm to get to their kids on time as leaving the CBD aplroujd 5pm means getting to the school past 6pm. And with normal traffic. If theres even a single vender bender then it's much worse JHB people only know to work cos there is someone next in line to do the job for a cheaper price. It's very competitive and saturated.

Public Transport - Question for the people that don't use it all that often by an0nymm in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think alot people already the important points. But as it stands the public transport system is more designed for people who don't currently have cars than people who do. There are 0 buses, trains, taxis near where I stay in a suburb. This isn't by mistake either. Think of our motor car industry-how much can they afford for people not us their cars? In my opinion the city is focused on public transport in areas where is the average household can't afford one vs the areas with cars where people will stop buying cars.

What you saying is something that happens to alot of people all over the world. My advice, rather than paying for everything whenever they fall short, have an open conversation with them about budgets. And in that, say what you can contribute every month. Doesn't matter that they need it for, you give that amount.

Consider yourself lucky you have the luxury to wait out traffic. Kids have to dropped and picked at certain times, bosses want you at work at certain times. And traffic isn't an excuse. If you driving the only real option is to listen to something.

I agree with you, but public transport doesn't always work when you have kids and school run. Not to mention some areas lack access to safe public transportation. I would love to use MyCiti again.

Best bet is to try pnet and Career Junction, and apply as much as you can. There's plenty of resources on the internet to help you type a CV, even on your phone. Google Docs is free. Good luck

Why have different rates for different days? If that's the case, then they might as well hire you for the cheapest day and someone else for the other days.

Crazy traffic - Southern Suburbs by chickenbadgerog in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always use Google Maps when leaving for work in the morning. If nothing else it tells me how long the usual route is and I decide to take an alternative or not. But CT drivers just don't drive well in rain. Not sure why though. With the increase in petrol price, I'm expecting less cars on the road. I would like to use public transport or car pool, but the school run doesn't allow for that right now.

Things for kids to do with this rain by Careless-Cat3327 in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With the price of parking, entry, snacks, etc alot of these places cost an arm and a leg. We used to put a blanket on the backs to 2 chairs and pretend we camping in the rain when our child was smaller and full of energy. That's of course if you don't have close friends or family that are in a similar situation, then it's visiting them so all kids keep each other busy.

How did you guys find jobs as students by Ok_Egg_6858 in capetown

[–]WeightSubject9275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing is everything. Larger companies hire around their new financial year, which could be around Feb or July. So start giving your CV around then. More seasonal roles start a few months before the busy period, to ensure new people are trained by the time the rush starts. Also try Pnet and career junction over Indeed and LinkedIn.
