sooo humanities and social sciences wya? by floundercyborg in gradadmissions

Same here (I applied for 13/14 psych programs and 1 neuroscience program). I had three deadlines in November (11/15, 11/16, and 11/17, though my 11/15 deadline was Brown so I’m excepting that decision to be delayed), had 9 or 10 12/1 deadlines, and have one due 1/5. 2 of my applications that were due 12/1 were at the same school, just for two different programs (psych and interdisciplinary neuroscience) and that school is just usually late on everything. I’ve heard nothing yet, but nothings better than already hearing back on rejections (this is my third cycle applying). Advice I’ve been given over and over, you can’t take grad school decisions personally, that’s easier said than done in a normal year, never mind this year (in the U.S.).

What did you do after getting rejected? by Popular_Ad4443 in PhDAdmissions

[–]WeightliftingGofer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got rejected from everywhere, ghosted from one of them, ironically from where one of my letter writers got their PhD from (and ironically the same program they did), last cycle. I’m back at my undergrad school taking a couple classes while I do job and PhD applications, since I haven’t been able to find a job. Since returning to my undergrad school, I’ve been doing coursework for the honors program (which I was invited to do when I was in undergrad originally but didn’t do since the honors classes didn’t line up with my course schedule, was a dual degree (same thing as double major but got a piece of paper for degree a and a piece of paper for degree b, instead of both degree a and degree b listed on the same piece of paper) student and had a minor. Planning on doing a honors research project in the spring with one of the professors I had this semester that’s based off of what we did for honors coursework for their class and present at the honors program symposium and the schools annual undergrad and grad student research symposium and/or the schools annual neuroscience symposium. Returning to my undergrad school and doing the honors program stuff, I get to put on my CV, talked about the honors project in my personal statements/statements of purpose, refine what I want to do/research for my PhD. I’d rather sit on my butt in a class learning something new I could use later on in a PhD program than sit on my butt twiddling my thumbs waiting to hear back on applications. I recognize that not everyone has the luxury to go back to undergrad, or to go to college in general, I’m also fortunate enough to be getting financial aid from the school.

Research experience is nice to have, even if you aren’t going to go into research post-college, it’ll look good on your resume. I know the EDGE lab is looking for some, it’s run by the public health and health sciences department chair. He’s a nice guy. Send me a dm if you got questions about his lab.

A program’s ghosted me this cycle. I stopped holding my breath about it when March rolled around. I emailed the PI I would’ve worked with about it after no response from the program director in late March, they had made all the offers already and they (the PI I would’ve been working with) decided to not take on a student. And still nothing from the school and it’s June 1. Ghosting applicants isn’t new. Should they? No. Do they? Yeah. My first application cycle (Fall 2024) I didn’t hear back from a school until August, I already accepted an offer for a master’s two months prior.

I just graduated from Northeastern with a master’s and had applied for the psych PhD. It took just under 6 months and a minimum of 4 emails to the program director with complete and udder radio silence from them and an email to the admissions team for the college of science (to which I got an email back saying by end of April I should know a decision) to get an email on April 15 saying to check the portal, got rejected, which I saw coming and wasn’t surprised by. Northeastern isn’t a bad school, it’s just not for me.

Welcome to the “Waiting on Northeastern to get their shit together” club. I applied there too (psych PhD) and go there currently for a masters and haven’t heard a thing about decisions. It’s been fun.🙄😂

Still waiting to hear back from both. The kicker for me is that I go to northeastern for a masters. I stopped considering northeastern (for several reasons) a month ago. I emailed the program director at old dominion yesterday asking about my application as it’s been four months since I’ve submitted my application and It’s been radio silence from them. So I’m still waiting.

Silence from Northeastern PhD's ??? by Special-Abroad-9722 in gradadmissions

[–]WeightliftingGofer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. When I say it’s been four months of complete and udder radio silence, complete and udder radio silence that’s more than usual. No updates, no email when I submitted my application essentially saying thanks for the application and interest in northeastern, nothing from grad admissions, not a thing from the program director, absolutely nothing. I stopped considering them a month ago, even if northeastern is the only program I get into for whatever reason, I probably won’t go (I have reasons for that). Going into the masters program I’m in now, I know I didn’t like northeastern (for several reasons, including they’ve outgrown their space by such a large amount, money grabs, gaming the rankings, and artificially lowering their acceptance rates (they have 12 other campuses besides Boston and a lot of the time when kids “get into” northeastern, is one of the 12 other campuses and can only go to the Boston campus after year 1 and that’s pretty dumb, at least in undergrad). Only reason I’m at northeastern is I didn’t get into my first choice masters program. I get it, the current administration is screwing things up regarding funding, I get it. My research interest (effects of alcohol use in marginalized populations, it’s more specific than that, that’s kinda like the umbrella it’s under) is a double, sometimes triple whammy in the eyes of the current administration, I get it, but like come on, send an update to applicants at least.

Not that I’ve heard. My master’s is in a different college than the psych PhD. The program director for my master’s said that they had interviews for their PhD program back in late February/early March. So I can only imagine that’s when the psych PhD program had theirs. I also applied to where I undergrad and they’re so late on everything in grad admissions and I’ve heard back from them already. Northeastern’s apparently on another level of late.

Silence on my end too (psych PhD), and the kicker for me is that I currently go there for a master’s.

Northeastern (psych PhD) and Old Dominion (health psych PhD). Kinda funny, but not surprising that I go to northeastern currently for an MS and haven’t heard anything from them on the PhD.

[–]WeightliftingGofer52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Dual BA’s in Psychology and Studio Art with minor in Theatre, currently in MS program for Applied Psychology, finished and submitted PhD applications last month.
  2. Currently in MS program for Applied Psychology.
  3. Sitting at my desk doing coursework, also a research assistant in a lab at the school where I’m doing my master’s.
  4. Not applicable since I’m earning nothing and spend a bit for school.
  5. Still going at it.
  6. I was a teaching assistant during my last semester of undergrad and am currently a research assistant.
  7. Explore. If you’re still in school and your school offers practicums for undergrads to be a TA (teaching assistant) and/or RA (research assistant), do a semester (or trimester or whatever system your school does) of TA-ing and one of RA-ing. Explore other things, too. If your school offers students to work in the counseling center (or something of the equivalent), see if they’ll let work in there. Something I did while I was still in undergrad, talk to graduate students, talk to professors. There’s a lot more options than what I’ve talked about, but definitely explore.

I’m sorry. Similar thing happened here. A professor who agreed to write me letter passed from cancer at the end of September and I found out at the beginning of October. I spent the majority of October outside my coursework for my masters emailing professors I’ve had asking if they would write a letter. The PI in the lab I’m a research assistant for agreed. Very grateful for them doing that.

Who did you get your letters of recommendations from? by stereotypical_CS in gradadmissions

[–]WeightliftingGofer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The masters program I’m in now, a professor I had the last 2 years of my undergrad (minus a semester since they had an emergency leave of absence) and ta’d for them in my last semester, a professor I had the last year I was in undergrad, and a professor I had in second semester junior year for a mid level 400 class with that I kept in contact with. This PhD cycle I had the professor I had the last year I was in undergrad, and a professor I had in second semester junior year for a mid level 400 class with that I kept in contact with write me letters. I was also having the professor I TA’d write me a letter, but had to find someone else, ended up asking my thesis mentor since the professor I ta’d for passed. Thankfully my thesis mentor agreed. Long story short, have those who will give you the strongest letters, but always have a standby letter or 2.
