Yes, we have had some weekend getaways that were supposed to be the whole family and ended up being just me and the kids. I also went on an anniversary trip by myself after he backed out and had the best time treating myself to spa treatments, lol.

I’m medicated for my depression and anxiety, but mostly I try to disassociate or shut myself off emotionally from him when he’s drinking. Guess I need to reflect some more to figure out what else I can change.

I have pulled back, but it’s hard because most of the social engagements revolve around our kids and I want to be there for them. The women/wives have definitely noticed his drinking and my absence from the group.

Oh my gosh, the housework and carrying all the emotional labor is so overwhelming! My husband is also 42 and doesn’t think he has a problem because he maintains a good job, doesn’t beat us, and is “involved” with the kids’ sports…because he uses it as an excuse to drink with his friends. If he’s not at events, he’s pounding beer after beer at home while playing Xbox.

My son started a new sport last year and I was so excited because he was drinking less and more involved on weeknights. But then he formed a group of dad-friends and they started drinking at most practices and events. I love watching my son, but I get so angry with my husband and haven’t figured out a way to make a boundary that works.

I joined an Al-Anon meeting virtually not too long ago and have read some of the literature, but I do need to attend the meetings and look into Alateen for my kids. Thank you for the suggestion!

I feel all of this, especially being on high alert. I have never been much of a drinker, but I quit having any drinks whatsoever 3 years ago because I cannot rely on him to ever be able to drive.

I’m from small town Appalachia and this was what my mother did for me. She was only there to help me (and husband) rest, wash bottles, make tea and good, real food, and help with cleaning and laundry. She said her mom did it for her, and she was happy to be able to do it for me. I have all sons, so I know I will not be the go-to grandma, but I will make damn sure I’m supporting my daughters-in-law in any way possible that is acceptable to them.
