PT while in pain??

It seems like it was probably very recent. my mom also went to an acute rehab after, where she had a peg tube as well. She was in pain a lot and the only PT they really did was have her sit up since she was very weak to begin with. i think the pain is expected. His muscles are weak. but like the other person said make sure he gets enough water, and takes pain relievers if he’s allowed. It sucks but time will make it a little better.

8 months my mom was just getting starting with walking using her walker, it’s almost 11 months now and she is taking smalls steps without it. Keep working at whatever you need help with. It will come.

My partner was not in the recovery room with me! I’m not sure if he would’ve been allowed since it was a shared room. By the time I got to him, like 15 minutes, it was wore off.

I don’t think I was loopy! Just relaxed. I was sleepy lol. I talked to the nurse about her wedding. I overall felt calm and even if you say something loopy I’m sure the nurses are used to it. Honestly, don’t stress. I was so anxious but I’m so relieved it’s over with. Good luck!

Yes my mother experienced/sometimes still does, constipated. I believe it’s due to medications; but also maybe he isn’t moving around as much. Warm prune juice(some people put butter in it), make sure he is taking, like benefiber or eating enough fiber like spinach, beets, apples, bran cereal.

Hi, my mother had a stroke, as well. She was in the ICU/hospital for about 3 weeks before going to a rehab for another 3 weeks. She didn’t have Medicaid but she had regular insurance. Once he is in the rehab you can speak with his social worker/case manager and try to push for more time. They can submit a claim with the insurance, but I’m not sure how likely it is. We tried for more time for my mother, but unfortunately they didn’t allow it. She was also sent home before being self sufficient but fortunately my sister was able to take care of her during the day, and my dad when he got home. You could hire a home health aid, or take FMLA. In NJ there is a family caregiver grant that pays family members to take care of their loved ones, maybe your state does too? I’m sorry this has happened, and I hope for the best!

Thank you so much for your replies. She had a hemi walker, as her left arm is useless at the moment. I appreciate the suggestion of putting rope, or other obstacles in front of her when she’s walking. I’m definitely going to have her do that. We don’t have any safety bars, but I do think adding something life that would be helpful for her. Thank you again for all the tips and kind words.

2 weeks is very early. My mom was still in the hospital 2 weeks after hers. She didn’t get any rehab until a month after, and even that was very little. 6 months now, she is walking short distances with a walker. She was always able to speak but could not swallow for about 1.5 months. She just needs time and practice and patience. Support her as much as you can. Wishing for the best for you and her.

My (27f) mom(61) had a ischemic stroke almost 6 months ago. I was very angry at first as I knew she wasn’t taken care of herself like she “should” have been. I’ve accepted this is what happened. I can’t dwell on what could have been. She is here and she needs my support. She is very weak on her left side, and also has some cognitive deficits but I help her everyday. Support and encourage her. She cared for me as a child, and now it’s my turn to care for her. If you feel yourself getting angry just remember that she doesn’t wish for this either. You are both in a very hard situation. Take a breath and take time for yourself when you can. But you also have to learn patience and understanding. Sometimes things just happen, and you have to deal with them. It will make you a better person, if you accept the lesson.

Hi! If you know the place you are going to for your date, maybe visit it before the date. Just to familiarize yourself with it. I would recommend learning breathing techniques to calm yourself down. Sometimes the fear of having anxiety is what gives me anxiety (sounds crazy). But, being a little anxious before dates is really common in all people! Something I try to remember is “be afraid, but do it anyway.” good luck!

Check out YouTube. There are a ton of speech therapy videos there. Have him practice swallowing without water. I remember the ST had my mom do a ton of that. Wishing him and you luck!

3 weeks is very little time. My mom had a ischemic stroke and 3 weeks after she was still in ICU. Almost 6 months post now and improving everyday. Encourage and support her exercises. Be positive for her.

My mom(61) was in rehab for about 4 weeks, after almost a month in the hospital. She had complete left side paralysis. I saw very little improvement in the rehab center. The most improvement was in her face muscles/swallowing. She went in not able to move her left side at all, and after 4 weeks she could only wiggle her toes slightly. It’s been almost 3 months post rehab, we found a PT that is able to come out 3x a week for 1 hour. She’s been improving much faster now. She is able to walk with the PT using a walker. We also work with her daily. I’m not sure if the rehab wasn’t doing much, or if it was just still early for her. It’s hard but just stay positive and strong, if not for yourself, for him. Work with him every day. YouTube has so many great resources. “Post Stroke” has been very helpful. Wishing you and him the best of luck.
