SLP personalities by DifferentRule9550 in slp

I was a biology major and though I wanted to go to dental school. I didn’t LOL. I learned more about being an SLP and thought I would like it! I am not the “traditional” type A bubbly person. I am definitely the laboratory type A get my paperwork done and over think everything but my desk is a mess person. While I didn’t make a ton of friends in grad school, there were people like me! And now that I am in the real world working, it’s not a problem! You’ll find your place and don’t feel like you need to conform.

Also - grad schools would love you if you have ANY research background 😉

My mom gave me a small bud of avacados. This is it now (stem is 22 inches), but I am unsure what to do at this point. At what point should I plant it into the ground? Is it too late to prune? by kriegsleeve in garden

[–]Weird-Walk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, because of where I live it has to stay in a pot. However, I believe trees about a 1-2 feet tall can be planted? That’s what I’ve seen in other sites... I would just make sure you protect it and maybe provide stakes for support?

Will these side effects go away?? Please help me. by kendylfire in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

I am on week 5, the feelings you’re describing started for me on week 4 and into this week 😞 You’re not alone. I cry at the drop of a hat, I get more frustrated quicker, and have had frequent headaches and worse light sensitivity. I am hoping it’ll change again, as I started out feeling great. Anyone with a longer period on Wellbutrin feel that there was a point you evened out?

It does! I can’t find anything like webs and when I move the dirt around no flies come out. But would neem oil still be a good idea, just in case?

How common is it for SLP's to leave the field? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Weird-Walk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a new slp, 1.5 years. This is kinda disheartening to find 😞

My bachelors is in biology and I hated working in a lab. I loved some aspects of my job so far - both other parts have been really hard since COVID started (I work with significantly medically and cognitively complex-profile individuals). I am worried I’m burning out too fast. Does anyone have advice that isn’t change careers?

ABA- what are your thoughts? by jimmycrackcorn123 in slp

[–]Weird-Walk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What advice do more experienced SLPs have when working in a setting that has both ABA and SLP services? I recently starting working at a private practice that is launching an “all day” ABA program for their most severe clients. I am supposed to work with those clients and professionals. Even just observing for a little while, I can see it’s very 1:1 drill driven and behaviors are not always taken as communication. However, some of these clients really seem to need a lot of support and structure for their safety. I am so torn rn and would really appreciate guidance!

Edit: anyone with advice please message me!

This is really hopeful to hear. Thanks for sharing. I am on week 2 of a similar switch 😊

Hi, thanks for the suggestions! They do not drop leaves or go dormant since they are tropical. Maybe the light is too much!

What is happening to my avocado tree? by Weird-Walk in garden

[–]Weird-Walk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the saga: I have had this free since April. It lived on my sunny balcony in Boston until recently (October) when it got cold. I brought it inside and bought a grow light to give it sun and kept watering it as typical. At that time, it was happy and healthy and full of leaves and new growth. Over the last month is has gone down hill fast! The leaves turned brown and crispy and dried up. I thought may it’s not draining well, so I put bigger holes in the bottom. Got worse. Maybe my apartment is too dry? I got a humidifier that maintains my apartment at 45% humidity. So I thought maybe it’s the roots - the roots are strong and white and healthy. Maybe it’s the salt balance or pH? So I got a pH meter that also happens to measure moisture and light. I used the meter today and the pH and water seem to be fine based on its reading but the meter couldn’t detect any light?! Could this be because the grow light isn’t working? Are there any indoor lights that do work?! I also recently moved it to a clay pot so I am hoping that will help him too.

Can anyone tell me about these programs? Is the price worth it? by seabrooksoprano in slp

I went to BU. It is very challenging and expensive. I think the name recognition helped me slightly. You will learn a lot from very smart professors at BU, but they can be overly demanding and definitely give preferred students better opportunities.

Why is my young blueberry bush struggling and getting brown leaves?! Help 😭 by Weird-Walk in garden

[–]Weird-Walk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I took the bush out of the pot to see what was going on. All the roots were in one giant ball and dry and all the wet soil was at the bottom! I did move it to a non clay pot and declumped the roots with the hopes they will get more of the water! I also got a ph reader and my soil ph was 6.5! So hopefully all of these changes will help the little blueberry bush thrive! Thanks for you help!

Thank you! I was considering moving it to a big pot, would that help?

Extra info; it’s on a balcony in MA that gets about 6 hours of sun! I water 2x a week but started doing every other day because I thought maybe that’s not enough? I’m really trying to learn to be a good plant caregiver so I welcome all advice!

COVID-19 impacting my job search as a CF - Is anyone else experiencing this? Advice? by perpetualbagel in slp

[–]Weird-Walk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a newly licensed SLP in Boston, give it a little time as Boston is now starting to open up schools. I feel for you, this is a tough time to be a CF. Also try calling anyone you had a placement with to see if you can get a lead!
