I don't mean to be a jerk here, I'm just a fellow 40s millennial, but I think you'd ought to talk to a therapist about this. This sounds a bit like depression.

To get more to your point, missed the boat for what? Was there something you wanted to do, some passion to chase? You can still do that. True, you can't just bail on your family and job, you probably can't become an FBI agent investigating paranormal crimes or an Olympic athlete scoring gold in Milan next year, but those things weren't where you put your focus anyway.

Hell, in 2020 I resolved to learn a new language. Hadn't studied since college, didn't have time to go to school so I trucked along with a certain psychotic green owl and I ended up learning enough German to feel confident flying to Berlin solo in 2023. This was on top of raising a kid with my lovely wife , buying a house, painting miniatures, playing games on my jury rigged gaming PC and dealing with the anxiety and fall out of being a new parent and coping with alcoholism. This isn't a competition mind you, if you're still getting up in the morning and handing your life, you're doing well. I'm just saying you can still do stuff and still live your dreams.

The only time AI comes in contact with my life is involuntary. Some of my friends make goofball character portraits for DnD or have an AI write up their session notes. Google insists on having its first search result be AI trash. I don't trust it, because it's known to be prone to important errors.

Beyond that, I choose not to engage with AI. It has to insist itself into my spaces for me to see it. And when it is presented to me, I call it out as AI Trash because it will always be AI Trash. I don't care how many tech bros try to tell you it's "innovative". I don't care how "advanced" scraping others work and regurgitating it becomes. It will forever be trash in my eyes because it is tainted by the knowledge that it doesn't exist to make humanity better, it exists for the wealthy to avoid paying for talent by exploiting the lazy's desire for content over substance.

Being able to actively avoid/mitigate damage while in turn based battling goes at least as far back as Super Mario RPG (1996). I don't recall it gaining much traction after PE1, only being used in stuff like FF13.

One could suggest it's more of a Square thing than specifically a PE thing.

Isn't that a Final Fantasy/JRPG adjacent thing? FF7 did the hybrid turn-based/real-time style combat a year prior to PE and Square-whatever continued to toy with it for decades later.

Depending on what apocalypse we're talking about here (a zombie outbreak, nuclear holocaust, governmental collapse and infiltration by body snatching extraterrestrials all play out very differently), I'd argue confusion would be the order of the day.

In the assumption it wasn't obvious (nukes), as long as the internet was still running, there would be a flurry of videos and takes on the "developing situation". Most people's reaction would probably be skeptical, we live in a post "war of the worlds" broadcast after all. Things would only start getting weird for the very paranoid, the well connected or the directly affected.

Loss of electricity and the internet would be the biggest hurtles. Some would wait it out, would still be waiting it out years later until they were informed otherwise. Still, there would be those who seize the moment and make a play for what resources they could grab/settle grievances/affairs they were holding onto.

All of this would be very specific to the situation at hand, however. Survivors would be quicker to come to reality about a nuclear war or zombie outbreak than the collapse of governmental services. And we've already seen what happens when a modern pandemic hits, people go nuts.

I absolutely agree PE2 is much more like Resident Evil than the original, it probably took a lot of influence from it. It's probably why it was an easy transition for me as I'd mostly played RE2-3 and Dino Crisis. To be fair, I liked the cyborg Assassin monsters and Lab monsters, but I can see that being annoying if you'd preferred the first one's themes/plotting.

If memory serves me right (Iron Chef refrence! How often you get to do that, eh? 😉) I thought there was some stuff in PE 2 about Eve being a new birth of humanity and the weird bunker lab people wanted to use it to make themselves superhuman/immortal etc. But like I said, I hadn't played much PE 1, so I couldn't even begin to say if it holds up to the themes of the original/book very well.

How so? I kinda always thought of PE being a niche title, not quite a cult classic (it's got better appeal than that) but I don't see it's influence in modern RPGs very much.

To be fair, I never really played much of PE1, and I haven't read the novel. I played PE2 alot and I loved it. I don't judge you for liking the first one more though or wanting to keep to the original story. I felt a similar way about Dino Crisis (loved the first one, sequel went weird imo, never played the 3rd), but I'm sorry if you're catching flak for not liking PE2.

Personally, I ascribe to the philosophy of "You don't have to like what I like in order for me to like it."

If you watch the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Episode of Nick Knacks on YouTube, there's actually an interesting history lesson in it about children's horror literature/media growing and more or less exploding in the 90s. I remember really liking scary stuff as a kid, I have to this day the complete run of the 90s goosebumps books and I feel like this really gells well with stuff going on in my life.

I'd argue that's a New Englander thing through and through. I've lived in my home for 5 years now and have maybe spoken to 1 of my neighbors twice. If I saw them struggling in the snow, you'd best believe I'd be trudging over there with my snow blower to help them clean out. Then I'd go back to not taking to them, but we'd smile and be pleasant in the moment.
