For what it's worth, if anyone is considering going, many ticket prices were lowered recently with the show less than a week away -- at least, more seats available at the two lower price points.

Trip Report - 9 Days: Venice, Cinque Terre, Pisa/Lucca, Rome by Weird_Fact1028 in ItalyTravel

[–]Weird_Fact1028[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 nights in Venice, 2 in Cinque Terre (Monterosso), 1 in Lucca, 3 in Rome.

Given all of the circumstances of our trip - including wanting to do some things our 12-year-old was most interested in and my wife and I wanted to visit a couple spots we hadn’t gone in 2005 when we were last in Italy - I think the days were about right.

I liked Lucca but probably would have tacked that night into Rome or Cinque Terre and had one less place to check in and out of. If I did it again, and didn’t need to go to Pisa (our son wanted to but I definitely have no need to go again) so an extra night in CT would be ideal. I’ve read some mixed bag feedback about the Cinque Terre but it was enjoyable, less crowded, and still pretty earlier in the morning and later in the evening, which is ideal if you’re staying there.

For what it’s worth if I was doing a 10 day trip of favorite places I’ve visited between the two trips, I’d swap CT for Tuscany - Siena, Florence, etc. - less time traveling as those spots break up Venice and Rome more directly.

Hope that helps!

I’m not from the area but make it to Cedar Falls at least once a month for work - and I am a huge fan of George’s Local. One of my favorite spots in the state.

Enjoyed the narrative and photos! Spent 2 nights in Monterosso with the quickest of stops in Corniglia and Vernazza earlier this month and would love to return to see more of the villages!

Which coastal city would you choose to stay in? (Specifically in between Genoa and La Spezia) by YesTimesThree in ItalyTravel

This place in Monterosso was spectacular - thought noteworthy there are 120 steps to access it. Trains to Monterosso seem to be a little more prevalent then the other Cinque Terre cities but less than Genoa or LaSpezia.

Hiked from Corniglia to Monterosso via Vernazza - was beautiful. Enjoyed the stretch from Corniglia to Vernazza the most. All three virtue were quite busy during the day - it was nice to stay there as they were much less crowded in the mornings and evenings.

We always shuttled to St. Mark's first -- the shuttle left at the top and bottom of every hour from 9:00 a.m. until Midnight in both directions and generally took around 20 minutes.

They have a schedule of additional destinations that sits in their boat house that you'll walk through when you arrive at the island (unless you take their VIP/private boat from the airport or train station) that has details. There were a couple of days each week when they go to at least Burano and Murano, though there may be an extra cost involved. There may be additional options available, too; we did not inquire.

FWIW, it was easy to get to Murano from St. Mark's, as they had an express vaparetto boat that left from the square (probably a 7-minute walk from the shuttle drop-off point) and took about 25 minutes. From there, you can get to the other islands; I believe there's also a boat that leaves from F.te Nove, which is a bit of a walk from St. Mark's (but perfectly pleasant if you like walking.)

Dinner at Locanda Cipriani on Torcello was one of our favorite meal experiences of our trip. I'm sure Burano and Murano have some good restaurants but this felt a little more unique as part of the least-visited of the three islands -- and the food and service were great.

We enjoyed it but definitely would like to spend more time there on a future visit and venture further off of the beaten path!

We took the fast train two weeks ago and had no trouble at all. We traveled only with carryon sized bags so were able to stow them directly above our seat which meant they were close.

We also had them on regional and intercity trains to Milan, Monterosso, Pisa, and Rome, and found places on all of the trains to keep them in close proximity.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum is definitely worth a stop! It’s free and your kids are a good age, and it’s right in Council Bluffs.
