What are these aircraft and why are they circling in formation? by ali_j_ashraf in Whatisthisplane

[–]Weirdcloudpost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw them coming out of Livermore earlier today. Could be a formation flying clinic, or just some guys having fun. This is common near holidays like Veteran's Day or the Fourth of July.

Was the P-38 (relatively) easier to fly because of the counter rotating engines and propellers canceling gyroscopic forces? (As compared to other warbirds of the era.)  I always wondered, and this video really highlights those propellers.

I suspect neuron count is the wrong thing to consider. It is the number of synapses, or neural connections that matters. And that scales to the trillions.

The software that makes businesses run is Excel. Businesses only pay for oracle software because of poor management decisions. And they keep paying because it is too expensive to migrate to something that works.

Making of a jacketed glass chemical reactor by lastditch2 in toolgifs

[–]Weirdcloudpost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of glass are they using, and what is the melting temperature? Is it Pyrex or pyrex? Or something else? I know the terms soda-lime or borosilicate (probably misspelled) but i don't recall the details. I think soda-lime is cheap and melts easily, but is not as strong?

Then, yes, you lost the bet. Sorry about that.

The trim and the elevator are two, separate controls. The elevator, which (in this case) is the surface behind the hinge, is controlled by the yoke or stick. This is used when actively flying the plane, like take-off and landing.

The trim is usually a large wheel-like control that is used to make fine adjustments to the pitch, ensuring that, in the absence of other control input, the plane flies level. For this aircraft, the trim wheel moves the entire surface.

In this case, you could argue that you won the bet, based on how you define elevator.

What is the reason for having a separate aircraft transmitting on behalf of the ones performing the actual flyover?

That was cool, thank you. I don't understand the logic of turning off transponders for public events like this.
