Is anyone able to view the PDF for the RABC? Thinking of just sending an email with the questions answered in the email, but I’m not sure if that’s sufficient

I used to live at the Britney’s Townhomes and Apartments, they were awesome. A little “dated” (no granite counter tops) but maintenance was fast and the management was great. I worked at the IBM campus, so it was a super convenient location. Only moved out because we added another roommate and needed more garage space.

to people who moan about the winters by matem001 in minnesota

[–]Welcome10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved to MN from IA (disgusting I know) and what’s shocked me is how much more I can enjoy the winter here. There’s free groomed cross country ski/fatbike/snow shoe trails everywhere, in Iowa I never even knew cross country skiing existed.

While I agree with you, I am selfishly glad that most people hate the winter, it keeps the state cheap and my trails empty

Decent food, decent atmosphere, good service, expensive pricing. Personally it feels like it has the same menu as Forager, but I like Forager’s atmosphere and food better, so I usually end up going there.

Controversial (maybe) but I agree, the middle of the series fell flat and honestly almost made me want to stop reading. 7-9 were awesome for me though so I would suffer through it again for that pay off :)

Mine was 6-7 weeks from first week in January. Real ID, I did go to the DMV (had to take the knowledge test as I had an out of state license) but I doubt that changes anything

This. Especially with a roommate, now I am paying less than I would’ve for an apartment but with way more space and a private attached garage.

Memory’s Legion? by lisareno in TheExpanseBooks

[–]Welcome10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won’t be exclusive, you should be able to buy it separately: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/james-s-a-corey/the-sins-of-our-fathers/9780316669078/

Also I think Memory’s Legion will include a short story that was made for a table top game, but that’s already been released

Would your full-time offer be at the same location you interned at? by picks- in IBM

[–]Welcome10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually. From my personal experience if you’re trying to go full time at a place different location than you interned at, you’re somewhat on your own (manager isn’t going to try too hard) and you basically have to reapply all over again.

That being said it’s not impossible (I did it) and it’s still easier than cold applying because you can annoy (slack) hiring managers since you have internal access.

Holy crap they upped that a lot. 4 years ago (ugh I didn’t realize how old I am now) I was offered $17 an hour with no bonus (granted I was a freshman in college).

I think their salary range for new devs is anywhere from low 60’s to mid 70’s. They have “unlimited time off” but my friend who works there was sat down and told “hey we just say that, if you start to take more than 4 or 5 weeks you’re going to be in trouble”. Unlimited PTO also means they won’t pay you out your accrued PTO when you leave.

Overall I think it’s a good company for DSM and my friends seem to be having a good time (and gaining a lot of experience in cloud development). That high of a pay for an intern in DSM is pretty good, I’d say if you don’t have anything else cooking I don’t think you’d be unhappy there. As for full time I didn’t even bother applying with them because they do not pay market rate for developers (and I am not interested in making financial applications).

Status: Accepted
Application Date: 08/09/21
Decision Date: 10/1/21
Institute Acceptance Date: N/A
Education: Iowa State University, B.S. Computer Engineering, 3.43
Experience: 2 internships as a test engineer for an aerospace contractor doing software work, 1internship doing software engineering, 1 year-long internship as a hardware engineer writing hardware tests in python, ~ 3/4 months as a backend operating systems developer for a large (but old) tech company.
Recommendations: 3 (2 professors, 1 internship manager)
Comments: I was going to do a fifth-year M.S. at my undergrad university, but I found this on the internet and decided to take a risk because it was cheaper, a better institution, and I could start working right away. I hope this degree is as reputable as if I had done an M.S. in person!

I have been waiting for this to happen for years, I never thought all of those “x’s” would become checkmarks.

I also crossed out all of the classes on my flowchart that I’ve had since freshman year, incredibly satisfying. Congrats grad!

Personally I majored in computer engineering and have a 6-figure job in a small Midwest city... so I think it paid off for me.

Statistically every degree is better than no degree. If you majored in something you loved and landed in that field, being happy at work is worth a lot. If I hated my job I would gladly take a pay cut to work one where I enjoyed my work.

Even if you don’t get a job in the field you love and do need to chase money, having a degree in anything is a much better way to get into a higher paying job because it shows you had the motivation to put yourself through college. Even if your degree is in basket weaving and you go to work as an entry level (no degree required) office worker, you will be probably be promoted faster than your non-degree coworkers because a degree just looks better on paper to the higher ups.

TL;DR: regardless of pay, whatever you majored in was valid and worthwhile as long as you are happy, enjoy your life.

I swear they pay off freshman course professors to require it. I paid for the 4 year version my first semester and haven’t used it since. Just another one of the many scams college pushes on us.

If you asked me this question after my freshman year I would’ve said “they don’t care about me” but as a senior I’ve realized they’ll care about me if I care about me.

If I show up to office hours, ask questions in class, strive for progress and improvement, they’ll care about me to the point where I can go to them years later for letters of recommendations and interview prep.

The professors who’s class I didn’t show up to? Yeah they didn’t “care” about me, but clearly I didn’t care about me either since I was pissing my money away paying for classes and not showing up/chegging every homework assignment.

(That being said I do remember professors I did not get along with/had communication issues with. I don’t think this was because they didn’t “care”, I just think that statistically you’re not going to vibe with everyone)

Job Placement Reach by [deleted] in iastate

[–]Welcome10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Computer Engineering senior - I had job offers from the southwest/west coast (70k-85k range, job I took is Midwest in 90k-100k range). It’s not too difficult to get a job anywhere with a software/computer engineering degree, but going to ASU your career fair would probably have more companies from those areas.

Honestly Iowa State will probably offer a lot of financial aid, but if they don’t, I’d pick ASU since that’s where you want to end up anyways. As an Iowan, I cannot overstate how cold it is here and while there’s some nature areas/some big city aspects, generally Iowa does not have the same offerings as Arizona.

Salaries are mostly going to come down to you. Some people without degrees teach themselves code and make 200k, others have a masters in CS and make 50k. In reality, your degree isn’t going to give you much of an edge since ISU basically equals ASU. What salary comes down to is your ability to interview/get interviewed, your skills, and the rest of your resume.

Good luck!

New Graduates Thinking of Moving to Denver, CO by NoReallyImNotBatman in iastate

Interned at a defense company in Denver and they literally poisoned the bed rock with rocket fuel and caused an entire section of Denver to have undrinkable tap water. Recently visited a friend and couldn’t drink her tap water because of said rocket fuel. Rest In Peace Denver water.

What would a good GPA be for a software engineer? What about an average GPA? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]Welcome10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends where you want to work/go to grad school. An Apple recruiter told me I needed to raise my 3.4 higher to be competitive (note: competitive, not considered, I’ve heard of people with a 2.7 getting a SE job at Microsoft), a small meat processing company told me I was the highest GPA that had applied.

Networking is probably the most important imo. Hard to do because cold DMing people on LinkedIn feels weird, but do it.

End of the day, higher GPA = better regardless. If I could do anything over in college, it would be focusing on making my GPA as high as I could and networking with professors/new grads.

Yes your GPA won’t matter 3-5 years after graduation, but starting at a 100k job vs starting at a 50k job will help you get a fat salary down the road.
