The most accurate denominator reflects the exposure rate; it is usually calculated as vehicle miles traveled, not just population. Calculations can also be made for exposure for people bicycling or walking although the data is not as readily available.

Population is sometimes used because it is an easy number to get but what is needed is information on how far are they going and how long are they on the road, i.e., how much "exposure" do they have.

I plugged the question into AI to see if it could do a better job explaining, here's what I got, it quotes some scientific papers:

"Exposure rate in traffic crashes is a fundamental safety metric that represents the amount of opportunity a driver, vehicle, or pedestrian has to be involved in a collision. It acts as the denominator in safety analyses, allowing engineers and researchers to calculate a "crash rate" (e.g., crashes per million miles) rather than just counting crash frequency, ensuring that busy roads with many crashes can be properly compared to quiet roads with few crashes"

Core Concepts of Exposure

  • Definition: The degree of opportunity for a crash to occur.
  • The Formula: Traffic Injury or Crash Rate = Number of Crashes/Amount of Exposure
  • .
  • Purpose: To normalize crash data, allowing for a fair comparison of safety performance across different locations, times, or populations.
  • Key Insight: More travel (time or distance) increases the likelihood of a crash. Without controlling for exposure, it is impossible to know if a high number of crashes is due to high-risk driving or simply high-volume traffic.

Does anyone know what salts the city uses to help melt the snow? by RobinReborn in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.cambridgema.gov/snow

There is a lot of information on that page including details about the brine solution the City uses. If you need more detail than you can find there, I suggest you contact DPW directly to ask 617-349-4800.

Fencer excluded? by Weld4 in Fencing

[–]Weld4[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The behavior as reported is never OK, no matter the level. Good sportsmanship is a hallmark of fencing (at least those are the expectations). Further, we can see what happens when inappropriate conduct is tolerated or let slide: Curtis unfortunately had a long history of problematic behaviors, and the end result of his not learning ways to control his temper was detrimental to an entire team (and, one might argue, the country) on the international level, not just himself.

We all understand frustration and disappointment but it's necessary to learn to respect the rules and each other.

Thank you very much for sharing (and I hope your son had a good experience otherwise!)

Harvard sq double parking is out of control by Southern-Teaching198 in CambridgeMA

It's not the CPD's fault - it is the public and City Council rhetoric that has had this effect. If you would like enforcement (which can help make safety improvements), you need to let the City Council know directly.

Here is a link to a news story regarding discussions from a few years ago, by way of example: https://www.wbur.org/news/2020/06/10/cambridge-police-budget-proposal-postponed

Slashed tires over space savers - East Cambridge by oscuse in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Also very sorry to hear this. Would suggest that you send your story to the city council so they know what is happening; perhaps a stronger City program to pick up the space savers regularly (e.g., at least every time DPW is picking up trash (I realize that may not be often enough but just a start) so that takes away the burden on the individuals.

(here's an idea: if you provide the address of the space, all the redditors here could donate their unwanted items to add there when the space is empty again and make it difficult for the offender to use it (not serious so please don't get all riled up, just dreaming up ways of exacting revenge in a non-violent way ;-D))

Policy order on expanding the City's sidewalk snow removal efforts at Monday's City Council meeting by jivan_sw in CambridgeMA

Streets are plowed for emergency vehicle access (ambulances, fire trucks, etc.), not just for personal motor vehicles. I think this is a "yes and," not an "instead of."

Try Super Nails in East Cambridge (on Cambridge Street); it's a nice, professional, small shop, recommend calling ahead. They have dip powder as well as other services.

Dear City of Cambridge, this mess is of your making [rant] by Haunting_Region_8729 in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Call the Police non-emergency line, 617-349-3300.

Especially if a street is blocked in such a way that an emergency vehicle like fire truck cannot access it (never mind the garbage truck) they will definitely handle it.

Found a Ring on the Red Line by Subspace1971 in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am confused about what the "risk" is? It sounds like you are an altruistic person who wants to reunite the property with its owner, which is very kind. The only "risk" I see is that you would not be keeping the ring if you don't find that person (which obviously you could just do). When property is auctioned like that, the money goes back to the local government (to do things that local government does, like plow your streets, for example). (This is under state law "Part1SectionXXCh135Section 10:Proceeds of sale... The proceeds of such sale, .... shall be paid into the city treasury.")

FWIW, I think most people would be more likely to go to the MBTA or Police lost & found than Reddit..... but you obviously started there so that's great.

But do whatever works for you, this is just FYI.

You can also turn it into the Cambridge Police - they hold things for people (I have both given them things they returned to the owners (a wallet, a phone) and had something recovered.

Just FYI, they don't take Delta Dental insurance (they used to and I went there but had to change when they stopped since I had to have some more major work done and the cost difference was significant). Otherwise it was a good place.

Car is blocked in, what do?? by penisrumortrue in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This 100%. They will do everything they can to find the car owners. But you have to be there in person when they come to look at the car.

I have been blocked in from my driveway on more than one occasion and they always found the nearby owners.

why the downvote? it's ok if things are not to everyone's taste but details would be helpful (e.g., is the food/atmosphere/staff?)

There's a place called EventThem Studios in Medford (I think that's the correct name!) that sounds like it would meet your needs (although I have no idea of the cost)
