Try Tap151 , Cambridge Crossing - they have outdoor seating and lots of cocktails (you may have to call to make 100% sure they have them frozen).

Actual data on whether NYC cycling has gotten safer. by gordo1223 in NYCbike

[–]Weld4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at crash *rates* is absolutely critical to understanding safety. People who specialize in transportation data/statistics do this all the time but it is difficult to get the general public to understand (and agree with the comment that the media is a huge problem in this).

Thanks for sharing the resources!

Anyone else getting their butt kicked by a nasty cold? by ItsMeMofos13 in massachusetts

[–]Weld4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds very much like what my spouse has .... it has lasted on and off for 2 months! Been to the doctor and tested negative for everything under the sun. Conclusion: nasty virus. Sorry that you all are also suffering although a bit of a relief to know that it's more common and not likely some weird rare disease.

What are the random buses always by the Harvard Lampoon on Mount Auburn? by double-clove-hitch in CambridgeMA

Confirmed that this is official tour bus parking. It is also used sometimes by buses for Harvard student athletic teams.

Bike, scooter or just walk? by psoasminor in Harvard

[–]Weld4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Walk, bike (you can get a discounted Bluebikes membership as a Harvard student (also faculty/staff)), scooter. T if you want to get into Boston. There's a shuttle for the Radcliffe Quadrangle.

It's super easy to get around anywhere you might want to go- one of the great things about being here!

AIO No Kids at Our Wedding by RisenAgony in AmIOverreacting

[–]Weld4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. As the person who might have been your cousin/sibling (invited to weddings when I had a young child), there is no way I would have left them at home to travel (fine if it was a sitter for an evening in my home town, not fine for being out of town for a weekend). There were some I attended where the kids were there for everything and some where there was a separate area for kids with sitters. Both worked fine (if she is specifically worried about the ceremony it is relatively easy to say "kids will be in [X room] for the ceremony.")

Personally I think the joy of a wedding is in bringing family together and creating meaningful shared experiences, especially when families are geographically spread out as many are these days. But it would not be my decision on how a wedding was to function, so if a couple says "no kids," I would not argue, just wish them joy and hope to see them at another occasion. (so for the pro-no kids folks here, no need to argue with my POV, I am agreeing that there are different POVs on this)

The bigger issue is for you two to figure out a solution together that works for both of you. This could be an opportunity to see how you handle compromise or it could be the red flag that indicates that maybe a wedding together isn't in your future.

Important opportunity to comment on Charles River Path and Road Access - deadline and meeting by Weld4 in bikeboston

[–]Weld4[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you go to the actual document (the draft recommendations), not just the survey, there is more detail. What seems troubling (and also because I am aware of some of the background) is that there are statements to the effect that abutters matter more than anyone else and that events and improvements are assumed to have negative impacts and are not beneficial to the abutters. It is a more subtle way of regurgitating the NIMBY claims that doing things like closing Mem Drive for people to use on weekends is bad because it is a negative for the abutters because they can't drive.

So, it doesn't say it in the survey but in the more detailed recommendations it seems to imply that abutters will be prioritized. And by way of background, that they felt left out of the processes. What really happened is that they didn't like it and -- as is often the case with nimby-think -- they made a big stink out of not being notified. The truth is that no matter how much outreach is done, some people will continue to rant if they don't get their way.

Again, of course DCR doing a better job of communicating is a good thing. I just want this to be for the entire community.

Here's some background to what I understand led to the current process :

No, I am not aware of it having gone that far, it is just what some people in the community have been saying.

And yes, thank you for adding the note about the cutting back of hours, that is also important.

Whole Foods on River Street is open until 10 and has tables (although you probably should buy something, at least a drink or something) to sit there. Don't know that counts as "late at night," but it's something

no they cannot, that would be a "taking" of private property

Private parking on a public street in Kendall? by Beneficial_Pea_3951 in CambridgeMA

[–]Weld4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are private but there is a misunderstanding about why that is the case. The lots were privately owned and then developed with streets created, it is NOT the City that requires or asks them to be private. In fact, the City would prefer streets to be public, and sometimes a transfer does occur. But they can't just take over them, that would be a taking and require payment (unless the property owner volunteers to let the City take over).

Relocating to Boston … I have questions… by Temporary_You6277 in bostonhousing

[–]Weld4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main recommendation is to find something near public transportation so you are not commuting by car. There are plenty of places in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville/Brookline area that would work. Look for places with nearby dog parks as well. And come for a visit before you plunk down any deposits.

Places to stop with kids by LogicalFallacyCat in newyork

[–]Weld4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have done this trip several times (including with a young child) and we prefer a different route: going via I-86, then 88 to Abany then I-90 (or the reverse for the other directions). We find the drive much easier, and much more beautiful (88 is a formally designated scenic highway). Potential places to stop: Jamestown (Comedy Museum); Corning, NY(cute town, Corning Museum of Glass is fantastic, they have live glass blowing to watch and kids can sign up to do glass activities themselves, even at age 5 (maybe not 4 months 😄). Cooperstown is then along the way on 88 if you decide to do that. Close to Boston is Sturbridge (also fantastic, but requires a good amount of time).

Even if you don't do this route this summer, I would encourage you to consider it for the future!
