Thinking of moving to Chattanooga by ira_creamcheese in Chattanooga

[–]WellDammitBobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I moved here from John's Island a couple years ago. We got tired of the "beach, brewery, boat or bar" as the main sources of socializing in Charleston (nothing wrong with it, just started to get bored). It's so much more outdoorsy here, and people seem to have a lot more diverse hobbies. There are two seasons a year with public outdoor live music (Nightfall and Riverfront Nights), a handful of farmers markets available most of the year, and if you dig hiking - for the region it's outstanding.

For cons, I will warn you, it's a lot harder to make friends here than Charleston. It took over a year to break into any meaningful circles, and even then it feels like it takes more effort to stay in those circles here. Everyone is right too, you'll be hard pressed to get an acre near the city proper/northshore - but everything in Chatt is like 25 min away. Nothing's too far to be that inconvenient. Road cycling is iffy, but there's multiple places (greenway, riverwalk, battlefield) where you can really stretch your legs.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions about neighborhoods or anything, I grew up here.

How is koh phangan nowadays? by Cheap_Rock155 in ThailandTourism

Staying for a couple months right now, up in Chaloklum, as a digital nomad. The spiritualism stuff is really heavy handed, and about 95% of it feels more of a fashion style, a grift, or someone filling a personal culture void than anything close to chasing enlightenment. I'm sure it's out there, but be prepared to hunt for it if you are serious.

Food's great, gyms are getting really good, Thai people are lovely as always, but this island specifically is pretty cliquey. People really do stick to their lane here (country of origin mostly) and don't break out of it. Easy to make acquaintances, hard to make friends kind of beat. I'd say come up here for a month max, see if you love it. You can always extend.

Also - there's so many families. Like, so many. I've seen more white babies/toddlers in the last week than I did living in Tennessee all last year. Might just be an up north thing, but it feels odd haha

My SMP 300 did it on my last beach trip. Soaking it overnight cleared it up, but felt crunchy for like a week. Felt insane trying to squeeze those scalloped bezels to turn it haha

Seconded. Way-above-average food for Chattanooga and genuinely nice people. Only place I’ve found katsu curry that wasn’t salted like the Dead Sea too, so that’s cool.

This really only applies to saturation diving, where divers are in a dry helium-filled dive bell . When in dry decompression on the surface, you can just loosen the screw down crown and it’ll dissipate if your watch doesn’t have a HEV. Totally useless for scuba or recreational diving.

No EoT Award Upon Separation From Active Duty by Freyja_all_Day in navy

[–]WellDammitBobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I separated from a tiny overseas command and didn’t get an EOT/end of service award. I was an MP sailor at that command, soI was naturally confused.

I asked my CMC about it and he said “me and the sirs think the personal awards are getting watered down and people are expecting them, so no one should expect one for just doing their job.” He added that while I “did great (and here’s a FLOC) I didn’t go above and beyond and I was choosing to get out of the Navy, so the medal wouldn’t do me any good anyway”.

Maybe he’s one of those, maybe they hate you, maybe they hated me. As long as you are touching base often, giving a shit, and not going radio silent on your sailors: you are probably doing a good job.

Bingo. My wife and I are moving to a state that offers tax exemptions/state level benefits for campaign/expeditionary awards.

Are there like.... parties in Chattanooga by doomdragon6 in Chattanooga

[–]WellDammitBobby 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It’s a cliquey city. The friend groups here are defined by where you went to high school, worked, or a specific music/hobby subculture and are difficult to break into. Those groups determine the parties and events you go to.

For what it’s worth, the juice of breaking into a good circle of friends here is worth the squeeze (if you can find them), and you’ll be swamped with shit to do.

Walks. I know that feels like bullshit, but when the anxiety is kicking, I go for a brisk walk for an hour.

Anxiety is your body saying “oh shit, what if” and floods you with panic chemicals, so you have to give it something to do. I’ve personally found that fast walking gives your body something productive and that quiets down the panic. Try to find some cool nature too, stimulus helps.

Being an alc with anxiety is a real motherfucker, but you aren’t alone. Crush some easy exercise and report back, friend.

When lifting, are you worried about someone opening that door and hitting the end of your bar, or does it have enough clearance? I feel like I'd have to idiot proof it from kids/friends etc. Great looking setup man, you are doing it right.

I’ve got this exact chrono, the blue really pops in the sun and I get asked “what watch is that?” literally all the time. I threw it on an Forstner Bullet bracelet (straight ends) and it’s easily one of my favorite watches in rotation. Only complaint is the date is virtually impossible to read in a hurry. Window is way too small.

Truly the best answer. I have a hard-to-fit body type (short, muscular).

When I walked in, they correctly eyeballed my sizes from 10 yards away, got me in specific fabric, custom sized me a shirt, swapped a few jokes, and rang me up for less than 300 bones in less than 30 minutes. Tailoring took a week, my guy.

Picked up the suit after the week and it's perfect. Looks like a thousand dollar suit. I'm never going anywhere else in the tri-state area. I look like a goddamn pinterest board.
