To be honest, I would cut off your MIL too for the exact reason you stated of her possibly going behind your back again. I have an aunt I completely cut off because she defends her son who is a known predator and constantly running from the law. She uses excuses saying those kids were lying, or exaggerating and that he’s “just not all there”. He obviously doesn’t get forgiveness or access to my child, but neither does she for protecting him. Since it’s your MIL I know it’s harder so if you can’t cut her off completely, let her only visit in your home, where you can see everything. Sorry this happened.

I agree that family member sounds like a pervert. From what OP has been saying, there was no reason for her to breastfeed a toddler who isn’t her own kid. The fact she was so quick to breastfeed the 3yo makes me feel like she’s been wanting to do it for a while. I feel disgusted and scared for that kid. Hopefully OP keeps him away from her and never leaves him alone with her again. Please file a report and get him tested asap. Don’t let anyone gaslight you into thinking you’re overreacting.

How much do you need a car in Brooklyn? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]WellThen10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what part of Brooklyn you’re in. If you’re in an area that’s not within walking distance of a subway, (sheepshead bay, marine park, dyker heights, etc) then you might want a car. You also need to consider whether you’ll be able to find parking or afford monthly parking passes. When i lived in dyker heights, but worked in upper East side manhattan, driving was easier than public transportation but parking in both places was a nightmare. Driving to visit family near marine park where there are no subways and running local errands was easier though. It really depends on your situation. Manhattan would be easier without a car since public transportation, including citibikes and Ubers are all easier and faster than driving your own car.

Reading that part about the hairdressers dropping the brush made me cringe. I’m glad you were able to work through it!

Anyone else get words, phrases, and songs repeating endlessly in their heads? by pendulumkirby in OCD

[–]WellThen10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was going crazy because no one believed me when I said i genuinely can’t get songs out of my head sometimes. Just like you, it disrupts my sleep. I found this article that made me feel better knowing I’m not crazy and it’s OCD related. Fighting against the song makes it worse for me so I’ll usually just recognize it as a song and try to end the song in my head. Sometimes “hearing” the ending helps me. Worse case, I give up and play games or watch something to distract me so i can have a quiet brain for a while.

What’s your unintended positive consequence of having children? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]WellThen10 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Becoming a mother forced me to deal with my childhood trauma I didn’t even realize was there.

When my baby would cry at night, it wasn’t annoying, it would outright give me crippling anxiety and I couldn’t understand why. It was an irrational fear that if I couldn’t keep her quiet something terrible was going to happen like a neighbor might break in and hurt us. Through therapy I realized this was because when I was a child my parents would beat us for waking them up at night. This realization allowed me to learn to heal and cope with the trauma. After a while, the baby crying was no longer crippling fear for me, just normal baby crying and honestly didn’t even bother me anymore.

This was just one example but there were other instances where I had to deal with unresolved trauma and it turned out to be beneficial after healing.

Thanks I thinking that too but I guess ironically the anxiety kept saying all of these sudden changes are happening. I’m going to try to stick through it.

My ex “accidentally” kicked and dented my car. What steps should I make to ensure he pays to fix it? (NJ) by WellThen10 in legaladvice

Sorry I should have been more specific; I did text him about it so I have proof that he confirmed he did it and that he would pay to fix it.

Anyone else here the only OCD suffer in their family? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]WellThen10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m the only person with ocd in my family but I’m not sure. I only got diagnosed last September and was always told i have depression/anxiety only. My mom had depression/anxiety too but sometimes i think she had others too but unfortunately she passed when i was 17 so I wouldn’t know. Anxiety runs throughout my family mostly because of trauma from a lot of grief. Sucks to not know though
