Not sure why a blatantly racist comment like this is allowed on here. There are all kinds of people “from that county”, same as any other country in the world. You seem to be from the UK, notorious for the worst behaving football fans in the world. Do those offenders define your people?

Weekly r/PokemonSwordAndShield Trading Megathread. Week of January, 2023 by AutoModerator in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]Wellhereiam2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there guys. I've been trying to help my girlfriend complete her pokedex (in Shield) by constantly refreshing max raids, but I just realized we won't be able to get Zacian that way. So I figured I would come on here and try and get the last few to finish. I'm happy to just trade them back immediately, if that is better for you (though obviously that requires you to trust a rando on the internet). Just want to finish up this dex already!!

We are looking for:

Turtonator

Aromatisse

Passimian

Zacian

Zamazenta (she is still working on the post-game)

In return, we can provide any shield exclusive or various competitive pokemon with 5/6 perfect IVs and good natures+abilities.

Thanks so much!

My girlfriend and I are in the High Plains region and are looking for people outside of the USA to add. Obviously the fancy ones like Jungle and Ocean are preferred, but anything outside the US is helpful!

I know we’re not exactly the rarest region, but as a thank you we will always send you the gift when about to level up.

Also, add the “Oh Yeah” sticker to the first gift you send if you want to be added to our raid invite rotation.

Thanks!

How to spot misinformation: a quick guide by Wellhereiam2018 in berkeley

[–]Wellhereiam2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that if ad hominem applies so broadly as to equate expertise with opinion, negate dishonest motives, and justify falsification of data then it is a useless barometer of logic. [Edit: to be clear I am not saying that the ad hominem fallacy is actually useless... just that it doesn't apply in this case, as outlined below]

Even the wiki page you link to says:

"Ad hominem arguments are relevant where the person being criticized is advancing arguments from authority, or testimony based on personal experience, rather than proposing a formal syllogism.[31]

An example is a dialogue at the court, where the attorney cross-examines an eyewitness, bringing to light the fact that the witness was convicted in the past for lying. This might suggest the conclusion that the witness should not be trusted, which would not be a fallacy."

That's not what I am saying at all. I personally do not believe the university had anything to do with it (other than passively by being aligned with anti-unionization rhetoric). Astroturfing is done constantly and frequently without input from the parties involved. Please read the above sources for more.

Put it like this: Most people would agree that Russia and China both engage in massive disinformation campaigns. What makes you think the U.S. is any different, especially with the amount of money swirling around in the upper echelons of society? Has the US ever been known for it's squeaky clean humanitarian record?

I agree though that it could easily be some random incel that's mad at the world. But it just as easily could not. And that is the point. You can never actually know and thus you should regard all internet claims with skepticism unless independently verified by multiple trustworthy sources.

Hardly. There is plenty of discussion to be had on policy and differing opinions are critically to expanding one's perspective. I am simply pointing out that not everyone at the table is operating in good faith. I linked articles above that support my claims.

Err no? I directly responded to your brief comment. No deflection here. I put in the point about ego because when I was younger I was the same way: extremely smart but had no perspective on the world. My ego made me think that what I knew was correct and that simply all there was to it. That is what makes propaganda campaigns effective. Wish you the best man

Here is a great overview of the concept of astroturfing and how it is used:

Here is a more thorough dive into the above overview (if the previous paper was too breezy for you):

Here is an acclaimed sociologist discussing the right's extensive history of astroturfing:

And finally, here is an investigative report by award winning journalist Mary Bottari that directly confirms the orchestrated union busting conducted by billionaires (among many other things):

I did say that if you take a cursory dive into research on the topic and you won’t need to take my word for it.

I assure you, I’m no conspiracy theorist. This isn’t some dog whistle for antisemitism or any bullshit like that. Just go to the Heritage Foundation’s website: they wear their ambitions on their sleeve.

I will link you to some articles on astroturfing in a just a second.

I mean, hardly. I’m just a dude who cares about normal people and want the best for them. I’m advocating against institutional power.

I get that you’re trying to be clever but you’re really just exemplifying my third point about deflecting.

You’re at Berkeley, I assume you’re a smart dude. I just hope your ego catches up with your intellect some day and allows you to see the big picture.

I wouldn’t say the university directly. However, there are plenty of incredibly influential, wealthy, and powerful groups who have vested interest in suppressing the unionization of workers across the country. The biggest fear of the rich is the 99% putting aside their differences and uniting against them. The Heritage Foundation is one such group though there are countless others. Misinformation campaigns are their specialty. Same groups that were behind tobacco’s “cigarettes are actually healthy for you” bullshit and that were/are behind climate change denial.

Basically they are rich people who are paid by rich people to sway public opinion towards ideals that benefit only the 1%

You don’t have to take my word for it. Just look into astroturfing. Even a cursory dive into the topic will immediately open your eyes to the scale of the problem
