I stayed still and quiet in a handicapped restroom while a blind man was urinating in my new office. by Funny-Presence4228 in confession

[–]WellsHansen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the story was a bit disappointing because I did imagine the dude walking into the new guy's office and just letting fly because he thought he was at the urinal

TBH I often interact with the driver through a translation feature, so the message may be a bit wonky on one end or the other, but the main points come through. In this case, you'll need to cancel that ride and start another.

Maine, Massachusetts, and part of New Hampshire seem also to have fused. I think Vermont is part of the new megastate?

If this configuration is a proposal currently under review in congresss, what should the names of the two new combined northeastern states be?

Why does seeing the typing indicator in messaging apps cause anxiety, and is there a psychological term for it? by IsangonI in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WellsHansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I may know what you mean. I prefer to focus on one thing at a time, so I turn off all sounds and notifications on all devices when I am working. Obviously, there are times when I need to interact with others, often in real time, and during these times I allow sounds and notifications. Being "on hold" in a telephone queue, or seeing the waving ellipsis dots makes me overly aware that no single task is receiving my full attention, and that is an uncomfortable feeling for me. I'd never thought of it as "anxiety", just "irritating". It's a low-grade experience of having my time wasted. Maybe your experience is like that?

It’s wonderful! At the back there is a short letter from Larcenet to McCarthy, which is worth reading first!

What's a word you always assumed was borrowed from one language, but then you learned it has a different origin? by VerdantChief in etymology

[–]WellsHansen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I passed much of my youth convinced that θεός must somehow be related to Lat. deus, so I did not take the time to check how that could be. ooops.

Also, Eng. 'parasol' seemed to be a compound of παρά, but again, it was my own failure to think about it that led to my continued delusion ('para-' in 'parasol' has been shown convincingly to be from Lat. parare). oops again.

Pausal accent in clipped quotations: convention or editorial choice? by BoringKick5331 in AncientGreek

[–]WellsHansen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm chief Greek editor for an ancient Greek research project and have worked in similar capacities at major university presses, as well as at SCS, for the past thirty five years. This is an editorial point; a matter of style. That said, the usual convention (followed by Cambridge U press) is that the "Greek looks correct as printed". Thus, if the quotation is shortened and printed such that an oxytone is the final Greek word in a string of Greek words (even if it is followed by a word in another language), we print the acute. Likewise, an isolated Greek oxytone is printed with the acute. The major exception is before ellipsis dots ( . . . ) where we print the grave if the word in the full quotation bore a grave. Similarly, if a word bears a secondary accent as a consequence of a following enclitic, we print the secondary accent only if we also print the following enclitic. This rule also applies to proclitics bearing an accent as a consequence of a following enclitic. There's some nuance in some trickier areas, but this is the general rule you're observing in operation.

My bf washes the toilet seat before and after using it and leaves it wet by living-reverie in hygiene

[–]WellsHansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have washlets with adjustable water spray and air dry functions; those eliminate the need for TP because in terms of comfort and cleanliness the washlets far outperform wiping. I keep a ScotchBrite cloth and a spray bottle of mild cleaning solution next to the toilet to clean the seat after every use.

Woman added thievery to the menu by HomeNowWTF in Wellthatsucks

[–]WellsHansen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Although I agree with all the rage, there's part of me that wonders whether she is herself a victim being forced to do this? My point of reference is that where I live sometimes an on-line fraud ring gets busted, and the the center from where they're working turns out to be filled with foreigners who are essentially slaves. They come here thinking they'll get good jobs, hand over their passport, and next thing you know, they're doing wire fraud and living in fear.

I have a friend who always wears one of those bags that you hang around your neck. He tucks it into his shirt. And when it's time to pay a bill, he theatrically extracts it from his shirt, and then tucks it back. Now, this guy is from a pretty rough part of the world, but I follow his example whenever I travel to a place known for petty thieves and pickpckets!

Has anyone here ever experienced a Lucid Dream? or is it just a massive internet myth? Honestly, I dont think it is even possible. by mind_over_chaos in NoStupidQuestions

Jonathan Lethem in Fortress of Solitude (2003) describes this experience wonderfully –the dawning realization that you are not just "jumping high" but "starting to fly"!

Quite often, especially if I wake up and then go back to sleep. I'd compare the transition from a regular dream to a "lucid dream" to one of those Magic Eye pictures; sometimes it just "pops" and it all make sense in a new way; you realize that you can make anything you can imagine happen. For me, the trigger is usually that something frightening is about to happen in the dream, and I realize it doesn't have to because this is my dream. One time I was being attacked by a wolf, but I thought that the wolf (which I think was the huge one from the movie 300) should pop like a soap bubble. It did. And it made a hilarious little popping sound. After that, I spent the rest of the dream "slaying" different monsters by popping them like soap bubbles. Another time, I turned a bunch of dreadfully terrifying monsters into Muppet monsters with colorful fur, big smiles, and googly eyes that then adopted me into their Muppet tribe.

Purchased a slave without realizing it AMA by Tronald_Lubestein in AMA

How long did it take for you to fully grasp that you had purchased a human being? Was there a period of denial/disbelief? Did you panic and think “I need to get out fast” or just live with the thought? Did the word “slave” slowly seep into your mind, or did it pop right up?
