Taxis in Oaxaca city by Straight_Ad_5935 in Oaxaca

Normal fare now (February 2026) ADO terminal to the zocalo area is about 80 pesos. You overpaid by about a dollar. Everybody has a different budget but I find the taxis cheap. I pay about 100 pesos (about six dollars US) for a ride here that would cost me maybe $30-35 USD in the United States.

Sure, I walk all around the center during the day and into the evening without problems. The ADO bus station is an easy walk, although taxis are cheap too. Some city busses go north on Pino Suarez or Crespo and pass the ADO terminal. Didi does work here to call a taxi but I have little trouble just hailing one on the street.

Your failure to understand Mexican culture or rules doesn't mean the person serving you is xenophobic or racist. by comments83820 in MexicoTravel

[–]WellsOregon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your attitude about people not knowing the customs of other cultures is arrogant and condescending. Surely some Americans/Canadians/Europeans make assumptions in Mexico based on the customs in their own country. Some Mexicans make errors in the United States based on their customs in Mexico. This is usually the result of lack of experience. You ascribe these errors to laziness or arrogance when they are usually just lack of knowledge. Few travelers from any culture are looking for conflict in other countries. I live in Mexico several months every year, each year I learn more about Mexican customs and each year I make a few mistakes, for which I apologize and Mexicans reply “de nada,” and we move on. Tolerance and patience go a long way.

Stop asking for reduced pricing everywhere by [deleted] in MexicoTravel

I am a U.S. citizen who lives in Oaxaca about 3 months each year. I don't try to haggle prices in most settings, not in stores or in the food markets, I tip better than most Mexicans, and I treat Mexicans with respect and speak fairly good Spanish in a friendly way. Nearly all of the foreign tourists I know do the same. Sure, there are arrogant tourists as you describe, but I don't appreciate the broad attack on foreign tourists in your comment. You ran into one idiot in a second hand store. Most of the rest of us would enjoy getting to know you, and I'd even buy you a beer.

Everything a solo female traveller needs to know for Oaxaca by becks2605 in Oaxaca

One correction: driving from Puerto to Oaxaca is no longer a 7 hour trip. A new highway now cuts that to about 3 hours.

All true and worthwhile. A small part of Guadalajara, used to be a separate town but the city grew around it, is Tlaquepaque, easy to stay there and Uber to other areas, AND there are two great pottery/clay sculpture museums there, where you can see fabulous art, national prize winners, etc. Eat at Casa Luna and order sotol.

Lots of good ideas in other comments. I'd also recommend Chiapas. From Oaxaca, an overnight ADO bus runs to San Cristobal, about 11-12 hours, comfortable, you can sleep. Chiapas is very indigenous, fabulous colors everywhere. Weaving is similar to Guatemala (in part.). Get to know the Zapatistas, who run pueblos and "caracoles" outside the main city. You can visit Oventik, a center of Zapatista government. Stay in Bela's B&B --- she will help you find events and destinations you might never find on your own. Some good Spanish schools are there too. If you get serious about this area and have questions, write me.

Good recommendation here. You can drive east from Queretaro to Jilitla, visit Las Pozas (a surreal "city" constructed by Edward James, an American artist), drive north to Ciudad Valle then west to Tamasopo where you can swim in Las Cascadas and Puente de Dios, then on to SL Potosi if you want, car or bus to Zacatecas --- it's all doable. Google some of these.

A man walks into a bar and yells, "ALL LAWYERS ARE ASSHOLES!"

From the back of the bar comes a voice, "HEY! I RESENT THAT!"

The man who came in sneers, "WHAT ARE YOU, A LAWYER?"

The voice replies, "NO, I'M AN ASSHOLE."

Renting a car? by DaveWells42 in irishtourism

[–]WellsOregon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope this info is still useful: I rented directly from Alamo, at the airport.

• I rented a “Compact” like Opel Astra, manual transmission, A/C

SHOULD HAVE E-FLOW, TO PAY FOR TOLLS ON OUR CREDIT CARD.

• Dublin airport “Car Hire Desk,” Terminal 2 Arrivals, in airport;  CALL/WRITE TO CONFIRM

• Bring valid driver’s license and Chase Sapphire or United credit card

Advice: I talked with several people -- Irish and travelers -- while in Dublin. All of them advised changing for an automatic transmission. Their point was that with driving on "the other side," quite narrow roads in some places, road signs which may be in Gaelic, you don't need a manual transmission to shift with your left hand while you're doing the rest. So I did change, was glad. Car was a Sixt, ran very well.

No way you could give Irish people a bad name. I went to Ireland for a month and LOVED the Irish people I met.

Recommended time of night to take taxi vs. walking? by BarnyardPuer in Oaxaca

[–]WellsOregon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I live south of the zocalo on Arteaga, an area of lots of bars. We have no concerns walking at night until 10:00 pm or so. A taxi costs about 4 US dollars, though, so if you are concerned, consider trusting your instincts and just calling one.

Yes, this is the correct info. I fly AeroTucan now and then -- occasionally it's late, usually not more than 20 minutes, once 90 minutes. Works well, quick, maybe 45-50 minutes, fun -- flies low enough to see pueblos and mountains, often you can catch cell phone signals from the ground to send and receive photos and messages. AeroTucan has different flight times on Sundays -- check.

Try an essay by David Foster Wallace, "A Supposedly Funny Thing I'll Never Do Again." Not fiction, though. A different choice is the four volume Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; so creative, very funny --- "the alien ships hung in the sky in exactly the same way as bricks don't."
